Antonio Daniels Buyout

Post#1 » by shrink » Tue Nov 3, 2009 9:30 pm

Just in case anyone who keeps track of salary themselves missed it from another thread, Antonio Daniels accepted a buyout of his $6,600,000 salary for $5,863,580. The difference of $736,420 is the 2009-10 minimum salary for a free agent with one year's experience in the league (and obviously, a free agent, and not a player still not on a rookie scale deal).

In effect, Daniels said, "Let me go, and I'll pay for a cheap replacement."

Now Daniels runs the risk of not finding a job, and losing out on the $736,420. However, if he does, he gets at least the vet min for a player with 10 or more years in the NBA, $1,306,455. I'll also point out that the NBA team would only need to pay $825,497, the price of a 2-year vet min, and the NBA itself would make up the difference.

The replacement we chose was Jason Hart, who's on an unguaranteed deal for $1,181,803. However, like Daniels, he's an NBA vet, and MIN's commitment is also $825,497. Unguaranteed deals become fully guaranteed on January 10, 2010.
