Stockpiling 2nds

Post#1 » by Klomp » Thu Dec 31, 2009 5:46 pm

Tuesday's trade also brought the Wolves a second-round draft pick, adding to their stockpile. They own four second-rounders next June.

Why so many? Wolves boss David Kahn considers any draft pick an "asset" that can used, packaged in another deal or sold to the highest bidder for as much as $2 million. The fact that second-round picks don't have to be offered guaranteed contracts makes them even more valuable.

"It's changed so much," Kahn said. "We have several teams in our league who value second-round picks incredibly high and are willing to spend a lot for them. I'm not suggesting for a moment that we will look to turn it into cash. But the league is a different place when it comes to second-round picks. Teams are willing to monetize now."

hmmm stockpiling doesn't seem to mean what it used to

Debits

2010 second round draft pick to Philadelphia
Minnesota's own 2010 2nd round pick to Philadelphia (top 55 protected in the 2010 Draft). If Minnesota's own 2010 2nd round pick is in the top 55 picks, then Minnesota's obligations to Philadelphia shall be extinguished. [Minnesota - Philadelphia, 7/9/2008]

2010 second round draft pick to Oklahoma City
The least favorable of Chicago’s own 2010 2nd round pick, Houston’s own 2010 2nd round pick and Portland’s own 2010 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City [Minnesota - Oklahoma City, 7/27/2009]

2010 second round draft pick to Oklahoma City
Minnesota's own 2010 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City (if pick is 31 - 55 in the 2010 Draft). If Minnesota's own 2010 2nd round pick is 56 or worse, then Minnesota shall convey Minnesota's own 2011 2nd round pick to Oklahoma City. [Minnesota - Oklahoma City, 7/27/2009]

2012 second round draft pick to Dallas
Minnesota's own 2012 2nd round pick to Dallas (top 55 protected in the 2012 Draft). If Minnesota's own 2012 2nd round pick is in the top 55 picks, then Minnesota's obligations to Dallas shall be extinguished. [Dallas – Minnesota, 10/20/2009]

We actually have like 2 in the 2010 draft once all debts are paid.

With likely 3 1st rounders and the remaining 2 2nd rounders we could mix and match to move up or down in the draft or trade them for future picks. This seems to give us quite a bit of flexibility in the "year of a big free agency class".

There will be 2nd tier free agents that won't want to wait and see what happens with the 1st tier free agents. They might be fearful of the money running short. In those cases we could get players from other teams on cheaper sign and trades deals than in bidding war in open free agency. This allows us to choose players we want who probably wouldn't pick us over another team

Earlier threads have listed numerous good players that could fall into this category. - Good for us all around.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.

Jeers to the Trib and its sports editor for botching the number of picks.

Cheers to Kahn for using the word "monetize"

I't'd be nice if we hadn't already monetized our own 2nd round selection.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''

Nice bit of trickery by Kahn "I'm not suggesting for a moment that we will look to turn it into cash." ...because we already essentially did by making the Chucky Atkins trade then stupidly cutting him to save ourselves $1.5 million.

yep we essentially sold our pick (and the PDX 2nd) for about 2.7M of ground Chucky and used about half of that money (1.5M) to sign Sasha. :nonono:

I think it's more likely we have 1 first round pick, than 3.

I can't see both Utah and Charlotte missing the playoffs.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
