Wyn's spreadsheet already shows Washington under the lux. Are you sure they need to shed more salary?

Those numbers for Arenas and Crittendon look awful low. I know they get a discount for the suspension but that's more than i thought.

I think you are right. When I had approximately computed it before, Washington was about 3.5-4 mil over the lux. This deal only saved them about 2.4. Don't know how they are almost a mil below the lux now.

I'm conflicted.

I got the pre-trade number of $4.8 from the WAS board from nate, who's one of the best numbers guys on this site. I think the actual number was $4.7975.

On the other hand, wyn has been phenomenal with numbers as well, and he's actually passed sham and storyteller as my #1 site for the best financial information.

Biff Cooper wrote:According to the guys on the Washington board, an NBA player is paid on a per game basis based on 8 preseason games + 82 regular season games. So Arenas and Crittenden played 8 + 32 before they were suspended. The games after they were suspended, the Wiz are only on the hook for 50% of their salary (which I believe is paid to the league).

Actually looking at the numbers, I think the guys on the Washington board might have their numbers wrong. I think they were using 35 games played rather than 40. I'm getting that they are still $4.22 mil over the lux currently

This is what I wrote on another post on Feb 2 - prior to the trade. I'm assuming the 8+82 game basis is correct, but haven't checked with the CBA.

Want another heavyweight weighing in? Here's Larry Coon, in his blog for the New York Times

http://offthedribble.blogs.nytimes.com/ ... o-wizards/

Larry Coon wrote: First, I was unclear yesterday when I wrote that 50 percent of Arenas’s salary would come off the Wizards’ cap while he is serving his suspension. That is only true for specific purposes — for example, when computing the amount the Wizards will owe in luxury tax. When calculating the Wizards’ tax bill, the accountants will subtract 1/220th of Arenas’s annual salary for each missed game. If Arenas’s suspension lasts the remainder of the season, the Wizards will save about $3.68 million on their tax bill.

Even if Arenas is suspended for the rest of the season, the Wizards would still owe about $5 million in luxury tax.

Crittendon was also suspended, so that makes the $4.8 initial figure seem reasonable.
