I though cpfsf's trade was pretty entertaining:

Minnesota in: Deng + Charlotte first round pick
Chicago in: Jefferson

Don't get confused, Minnesota and Chicago both have the rights to a Charlotte first round pick.

Why for Minnesota: Rubio can't come until 2011 or 2012, so what's the rush. The pick could be saved or traded in the future. Minnesota can rebuild another year during the 2010/2011 season. In 2012 LAC gets Minnesota's pick, so 2011/12 is when Minnesota should try to contend.

Why for Chicago: They offered Deng and Thomas for Jefferson (Minnesota rejected). Thomas was traded for a first round pick immediately after, so the value doesn't seem far off.

I'd add that the best info I can find on CHI's CHA pick is that its lottery protected, with declining protections (probably like ours). The Stepien rule means it can't be given out until two years after we get ours, and that may take a while. However, it probably ends in an unprotected pick. CHA could be in for a long rebuild with an older team, and losing two picks. to fix the problem.

2010: Top 12 protected, 2011: Top 10 protected, 2012: Top 8 protected, 2013: Top 3 protected, 2014: Unprotected

I'm no Deng fan at that price, but the overall poll was pretty even. Would you do this trade? Would you do it if the future CHA pick was swapped with the worse of the current CHI/MIL pick (#17 this year?)

I'll reshare my earlier point of view on this trade --

I would rather have the pick + cap space than the pick + Deng.

I like Deng as a player, but, to me, he is at best the third best player on a championship team. Problem is, he'll take up on average 1/4 of a team's salary cap for the next four years. That's why I'd rather just have the cap space and try to find a player that can be the third best player on a championship team for less money.

I guess the main reason I'm so trigger happy is because of the pick. I could have sworn I read that it does become unprotected (on an actual website), for now you'll have to settle for a fan post http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=988450&p=22415974. I've given up on researching it myself.

Assume Charlotte makes the playoffs this year. Theoretically the quickest we could get the other Charlotte pick would be in 2012. In exactly two years (the season before the 2012 draft), Gerald Wallace would be 29, Boris Diaw would be 29, Stephen Jackson would be 33, and DeSagana Diop would be 30. Their players of the future are Tyrus Thomas (RFA this summer), DJ Augustin, Raymond Felton (UFA this summer), and Gerald Henderson. Remember that they will lose a pick to Minnesota two years before this.

Eastern teams that will arguably be better than Charlotte in 2 years: New York, New Jersey, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Chicago, Indiana, Orlando, Atlanta, and Miami. So what's the worst that could happen, we draft #15?

If CHI strikes out getting Amare, Bosh or Boozer, I wonder if they'd do a that deal?

They could REALLY use a low post scorer, and Jefferson would pair very nicely with Noah.

I also agree with cpfsf that that pick is going to be valuable.

He's on a very cheap rookie contract. We would have a ton of money (epic cap space) to spend on guys like Perkins, Gasol, Horford, or Noah in 2011. Oh, and we'd be guaranteed a top 4 pick

I should also note you could replace the Utah pick with Ellington. Of course we'd have enough rookies needing time as it is and we could really use some experienced guys on the court (even if it is a sophomore).

Wow, yes, that is terrible. Jefferson has negative value there.

Scratch that last trade. Pretend I never wrote that. I'm sorry I even posted it.

I just want to go back on that pick though for a second. I think teams will soon realize future draft picks are not candy and I have a feeling that they won't be traded around so casually in the future. This draft pick is as close to a sure thing as you can get. I will argue that this is at worst the 15th or 16th pick in the draft. Utah right now is in very good position to nab Wesley Johnson thanks to New York. That's the position I want to be in. When I saw the Tyrus Thomas trade, I just knew that was a recipe for disaster. The squirrel climbed a tree. There is no guarantee the Bobcats are even a playoff team, they have few draft picks, bloated contracts, and very few prospects on the team. Time and time again mediocre teams offer first round draft picks only to get burned in the future.
