"(President) David Kahn and the coaches asked me to be patient this year," Wolves owner Glen Taylor said Thursday.

Taylor's patience will end April 14, when the Wolves play their season finale against the Detroit Pistons at Target Center.

"We're going to start meeting immediately at the end of the season to put the opportunities in place to improve this team next year," Taylor said. "We have a lot of them. We have the opportunities for our draft (currently three first-round picks); we'll see what (lottery) positions we get.

"We'll have the opportunity to look at other players, and possibly trades if we feel that will help our team.

"So (management) is going to be really active and we're going to start really early to prepare ourselves. We have a lot of work to do; I'm excited about working with the guys on that."

The Wolves are expected to be aggressive in the free-agent market.

"There are never enough good players, so it will be competitive," Taylor said. "We realize that right from the very beginning. We're going to have to be aggressive and tell players we would like them here. They've got to know they're wanted. We're hopeful they will like the coaches, that these are the type of guys they want to play for. And that they're willing to be part of building a program."

I asked Taylor if he would put up with another season like this next season.

"We all anticipate we'll have quite a bit of improvement next year," he said. "They didn't ask me to have patience for two years. They asked me to have patience for one year."

Harrison Barnes says bye. I wanted to rebuild for one more year because Rubio's still in Europe, but it's Taylor's money. Can't blame the guy for wanting something to be finished at the deadline.

I'm tired of rebuilding and I am tired of young players.

+1

I'm fine with getting one or two more younguns via the draft this year but we need to start bringing in some experienced players as well. I know I'me setting myself up for disappointment but I really want and expect the FO to make some MAJOR improvements.

I'm ok with making moves in order to compete. However, I don't want to make a move for the sake of making a move. If something isn't there, don't pretend it is. Detroit got a little trigger happy last year and signed Villanueva and Gordon to long contracts. Do it if it makes sense. Don't force it.

Taylor can be rich and clever but now everybody knows that he said to Kahn : "David, trade Rubio for something good this summer or look for another job". This scenario decreases Rubio's value.

Taylor must be patient, Kahn doesn't asked him about two years because at least they will need 4 or 5.

Lobo-
We can improve VERY much this offseason without trading Rubio, and that's exactly what we will do. We will improve substantially next year, so that Ricky will be excited to come over in 2011.

Hopefully this is merely public posturing, particularly given the infinite amount of patience he had for McHale's failures. It may not even be posturing of a "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it" bent but rather of foreshadowing what is almost certain to be significant moves to come.

We won with McHale for a long time. The only time in Timberwolves history where we've had winning teams.

Well said. I think DET was worried they'd have cap space and no one to spend it on, and locked a lot of longterm money into above-average players. That's a recipe for disaster.

I'm not too worried. It didn't even cross my mind that he was saying "Trade Rubio."

My sentiments exactly.

And i'm glad Glen Taylor is too. But even if we get lucky at the draft, and manage to sign a decent free agent. Realistically there's no quick fix for this team, and Kahn's probably right with his timeframe for success.

That lineup would result in me setting the record for longest continuous vomiting session. Honestly, it would be worse than the Family Guy episode where they drank Ipecac for the last piece of pie.

That team would be a disater chemistry-wise, long term-wise, and fiscaly-wise.
