LAL - MIN - ATL (shrink's Vujacic deal)

Post#1 » by shrink » Wed Jul 28, 2010 4:52 pm

LAL GIVES: Sasha Vujacic + S&T'd Josh Powell + 2011 1st
LAL GETS: Delonte West + Telfair + $2.3 mil in cap space when Delonte's waived.

MIN GIVES: Delonte West + Telfair ($2.3 mil in cap space)
MIN GETS: Sasha Vujacic + 2011 1st

ATL GIVES: TPE
ATL GETS: S&T'd Josh Powell

WHY FOR ATL?:

They are close to signing Powell right now .. no change

WHY FOR LAL?:

5.475 Sasha
-2.7 Telfair
-0.5 Delonte West
2.275 salary savings x2 for lux = $4.55

Lakers get their back-up PG (no additional money on Shannon Brown) and sell their pick #28-30 for 50% more than it's worth ($3 mil).

WHY FOR MIN?:

They were going to waive West and Telfair anyway, so now they waive Sasha. It costs them $2.3 mil to buy the Lakers late 1st, which is more reasonable.

1) We're in the business of cutting costs, not buying picks.
2) That pick is worthless to us, since it doesn't have former lottery pedigree, and unless it's a second round talent that we pick at #28-#30, probably won't have a nice smile on draft night.
3) It's basically a second rounder, who cares?

Done deal from LAL's perspective. Don't see why the wolves would possibly turn it down when basically all they're doing is enhancing the return on the Sessions deal from nothing to a late 1st. And of course it makes sense for atl since they want to sign Powell anyways. Nice deal shrink.

Is a bad deal for us in my opinion..if we get Sasha we will need to give him play time..and right now we need to give time for guys like Webstter,Johnson,Ellington...

So the best move to make is release Telfair,West and then pick up a veteran PG in FA.

Close, but Lakers want Brown, not Bassy. Instead of sending back Bassy, could the incentive for the Wolves be Ebanks or Character? Neither will get playing time with LA, but both seem to have promise. I know Ebanks duplicates what the Wolves already have at the wing, but I don't think anyone is guaranteed minutes at this stage and you never know what gem could emerge. I think it would be worth a shot to try one of those guys.

Also, no reason to waive Sasha (unless LA wants him back as part of a wink wink Big Z type of deal). He knows the triangle, has worked with Rambus, and could help out the young guys.

This.

And why are we spending $2.3mil on obtaining a potential 4th pick in the 2011 draft that will likely be in the 29/30 range?

$2.3 million for a first is a little more reasonable, but still more than I'd want to spend for one that late in the 1st. That said it would give us 3 picks that we could trade (obviously we couldn't trade our own until draft night) that could be part of the big deadline deal we've all switched our hopes to as our next big move.

That would leave us with one fit PG to start the season.

I like it, buying a 1st for 2.3 million is worth it, plus it gets us over the minimum salary (I could see something like West/Telfair for Sasha/3 million cash as well)

Then when Sasha comes here we give him 2 choices a) take a 3.5-4 million dollar buyout b) sit at home all year... if he takes the buyout (I think he would and he'd get at least the min somewhere else), then we're paying less then 1 million for a 1st round pick

True about Sasha maybe taking less in a buy-out. It sounds like Telfair's gone already. Josh Powell signed with ATL on Tuesday and it looks like the Knicks have made an offer to Shannon Brown, so Telfair might become more appealing. The deal could be adjusted to a straight, two-team deal:

MIN GETS: Sasha Vujacic + S&T'd Devin Ebanks + 2011 1st

LAL GETS: Delonte West + Telfair + $2.3 mil in cap space when Delonte's waived.

Sure, the Laker 1st is at the end of the pack, but its worth, at a minimum, $3 mil in cash if we can't find a better trade.

If we get Sasha Vujacic do we get to stuff him in a catapult large enough to put him into orbit?

I'm not sure how you guys dont understand this, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with having an extra 1st round pick, no matter how many we have.

And then we just sign a veteran PG for a year, and the problems are gone, or we could sign guys to 10 day contracts, i just dont see why we wouldnt take an extra 1st round pick for next to nothing

I would rather just sign Delonte once the Wolves waive him rather than include Ebanks. Trading for Delonte, waiving him, then trying to resign him seems dicey to me, his value to the Lakers is in his game, not his partially guaranteed contract.

Aren't there rules about when draft picks can be traded?

Also, what if its a straight swap:
LA sends Vujacic + 1st for Space, creates a TPE
Uses the TPE for Telfair, LA also sends Minn 500k + 2nd (for West buyout and recoups what Minn sent to Cleve)

Close, but I don't think an LA 2nd rounder = a MN 2nd rounder, even if it is like 4 years from now.

I think we should demand their 2012 pick first round pick and not their 2011.
