Since we really don't NEED more cap space, why not let the deadline pass and let the highest bidder get his game? I mean, aren't there a number of teams who are waiting for the Wolves to waive him so they can snatch him up? Why not just keep his contract and receive some sort of compensation for him?

What I am contending is that West as a player is more valuable than the pure cap space that he would provide and, as such, we should hang on to him to deal him as a player to the Celtics or some other team.

I assume they're interested in paying him the minimum, but not so much the $5 million or whatever he would make this year if he's not waived. If they were willing to pay him that much they would likely want to send us a contract we don't want.

This will be an interesting test of Kahn's diligence.

I have no idea what kind of contract West will get in free agency, especially with the risks of his mental health and punitive action from the NBA. However, if he gets a comparablle deal or worse, particularly from a team that has cap space, then that will have been a missed opportunity.

We shall soon see, because West is one of the most talented players remaining in free agency.

More savings rather than gathering talent. The choice of spendthrift Glen Taylor or the ineptitude to work out a good deal by David Kahn? Or was this simply the right thing to do?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

Hard to say for sure, but I would guess that the talent on offer was simply not what Rambis and Kahn were looking for.

Better to get nothing in return than a piece that doesn't fit.

Tough call without knowing what conversations took place. Waiving West was what was expected so it can be looked at as nothing more than predictable. The only rumor I heard around West was Vujacic and the Lakers' first round pick for West. Assuming Sasha would take a buyout, I'm ok with buying 1st round picks with Glen Taylor's money. We might be paying more for that pick than what it would cost were we to do it on draft night, but I like having the asset in advance. This gives us more time to market the asset and should a player drop to that slot, it keeps the Lakers from raising the price on us or not making a deal with us at all.

Waiving West wasn't what I really wanted the team to do, but I agree with earlier posts in that I doubt teams wanted to pay him 5M this year.
