Quick question about the Jaric-trade-pick

Post#1 » by breatnach » Mon Oct 25, 2010 9:59 pm

Assuming we don't get out of the top 10, hence can keep the pick ourselves. Are we allowed to give it up anyways?

Some may say it's stupid to give up our pick if we end up getting the 6th or 7th pick, BUT assuming there is a lockout looming and therefore 2011 draft does not include players like Harrison Barnes or other potential superstars and 2012 will be much deeper talentwise - are we even allowed to "pay our debts" or do we have to keep it, because it is Top10 proteced?

Anyone agree with me, or would you prefer to keep our pick, even if it's in the range of 6-10 (which I am fairly confident will be the case, since we won't be last and even if we end up 3rd worst, we'll get screwed by the ping pong balls again)?

We can't trade the pick but we could pick a player for another team then trade him after the draft.

I don't think we would just have the option. LAC would have to agree.

No. You can't trade the pick to one team as an 11-30 pick and then also trade it conditionally to another team with say a 1-5 protection (a 6-10 pick).

Even if it was post lottery and we kept our pick, we couldn't trade the draft pick to another team since we'd still owe the clippers a future pick because:
We'd owe a 2012 pick making 2011 untradeable (2 yr rule)

It would have to be a draft day deal (pick a player and trade him).

I don't see why after the draft lottery we couldn't trade our pick this year to LAC for the rights to our future first back.

I don't think the question was whether we could trade the pick to another team. I think that it was whether we could trade the pick to the Clippers even if it is top 10 and thus guarantee that we have a pick next year.

We can work out whatever we want with the clippers as long as they agree.
I was referring to a 3rd team.

Bar drafting an absolute star I'd gladly give the clips this year's pick.
However if it's an incredibly weak draft I highly doubt the clips would agree to that.

He's not asking about trading the pick, he's asking whether we can pay our debt to the Clippers whenever we want.

And the answer is no. If we change the original deal in any way the clips have to agree to the changes.
That includes dropping the protection level on the pick to pay our debt.

So what you're saying is if we package Mo Ager and the 9th pick of the 2011 draft, we'd get to keep our 2012 pick which is guaranteed to be #1, and get a future 2nd in return?
