As many of us have noticed, Michael Beasley has seemed to take on the surprising role of leader with this young team. He has frequently got on player for dropping the ball and acting up while also encouraging players and getting them hyped. We haven't had a player like this since KG or Sam Cassell.

Examples:

-Cheering up Darko during practice a few weeks back.

-The situation where he told Rambis not to put Love back in the game if he was going to mope.

-Frequently we see him getting hyped and hyping players. Bassy really seems to respond to this.

Could he really turn out to be our team leader? The one we have been looking for for so long? I hope so, he seems to be doing a great job so far. I think I had this guy pegged completely wrong last year. I heard he was cancerous and wanted no part of him. Looks like I was dead wrong and ignorant.

Then there's Darko Milicic, the re-signed $16 million (guaranteed) center who proved himself to be a wee bit temperamental during this morning's practice.

Rambis returned the players to run sprints after their scrimmage -- the winning team of the three did one trip down the floor and back, the other two teams did two -- and told them if any one player came up short of the end line, everybody would run again.

Assistant coach Bill Laimbeer flagged at least three players for the violation, although, given Rambis' warning, maybe Laimbeer was just being Laimbeer and designated the players just to see how they'd react.

When forced to run again, Milicic not only touched the end line, he kept going and going, taking more strides and touching the first row of seats before turning back.

Upon completing his sprints, Milicic was visibly angry, a development that caused Beasley to come over and attempt to console him..

Beasley basically said, if you have to run again big fella, we're all running again with you.

not bad. Given that Darko has the weakest confidence on the team do we have any examples of the rest of the team encouraging him?
We want these guys to gel long term so that would be heartening to see.

I get the feeling that this is how he's always been. He showed flashes of this at Kansas State, but I think the veteran heavy Miami team just wasn't a good place for him. For example, would Durant be as much of a leader if they'd kept Allen and/or Lewis? I doubt it, as no good veteran wants to take orders from rookies and sophomores.

I think what's even more incredible is the fact we got him for 2 2nds.

Exactly. Over there, nobody had to listen to the sophomore who the coach didn't like. Over here, he's probably one of the best offensive talents in franchise history and has the support of both Rambis, Love and Stone Cold Nic Pekovic

I hated him a few months before the draft but as I did my research on him, I fell in love with him and badly wanted Miami to pass on him so we could take him. I defended him and said he just needed to mature, and that he was a good kid, just liked to joke around a lot. His first two years did nothing to justify my claims and beliefs but it seems he is maturing and turning it around.

To be honest, it might have been the best place for him. He realized he wasn't as good as he thought and he needed to change himself to become the player he could be. He seen how a leader leads in Wade but also seen the flaws and noted it. He could be much better today for what happened in Miami.

He also learned alot about leadership from his mentors UD and ZO at Miami. He and UD were very close. Don't underestimate the great learning he got there - he was young and therefore immature, Spoelstra did what was needed for his future. As it turned out that future wasn't to be in Miami , but spo didn't know that before late last season/ offseason.

I worried about his immaturity, but I think he is growing up. Having a child, going through rehab and going from south beach to MN can do that. So his attitude could be maturing.

Skill-wise, I have always said he can be "ok" as a 4, but he is special if he can play the 3. I would like long term for his minutes to be a 2/1 ration 3/4. Play a little 4 as a small ball line-up, but most of the minutes as the 3.
