As I understand it:

Under the current CBA, if Rubio were to stay overseas one more year after this one, he could be signed for either his rookie scale contract, or whatever cap space we would have free.

Yeah, that's my understanding as well. We should probably look forward as if 12-13 is the likeliest time he comes over. I don't know when his deadline to buy himself out is, but it could very well come before there's a new labor agreement. Can't imagine he'd be too eager to shell out that coin if that's the case.

I don't really want the Wolves to make a move for long term money with their cap space. Some moves to pick up small assets, as OKC has done would be great, but using cap just to use it is more likely to end up being destructive than constructive. Maintaining salary flexibility would be much better than making a panic move because the cap is burning a hole in the FO's pocket.

I agree that the assets other teams might want to give up is limited. But I would also have no problem in acquiring draft picks for cap space. In fact I would prefer it over taking on a long contract just for the sake of using up cap space before the deadline.

I see acquiring more draft picks as a great way to use up our cap space this year. They don't have to be 2010 picks.

I just don't want us acquiring players for the sake of using up our cap space.

I don't think Houston will want to trade their assests. They're probably trying to package stuff just like us.
