I think under normal circumstances it wouldn't be betrayal, but the way he went about it definitely escalated it to that level. National TV? Your own 1 hour special? Not being open about negotiating? It was completely selfish, and he tried to mask it with the Boys and Girls Club.
I agree with the B&G Club comment. It reminds me of the time when KFC offered to donate to charity for any player who would do the chicken dance after scoring a touchdown in the Superbowl. Yes it's for charity, but it's more to mask criticism than anything.
