Bench Production

Post#1 » by LOBO 7 » Mon Jan 31, 2011 10:32 pm

Before this season, I, like many of us, thought that we had a pretty deep team. On paper at least, talent-wise, I thought we had 9 or 10 players who could contribute.

It hasn't exactly worked out that way, but we have had a lot of injuries.

Lately, our bench is showing some signs. Wes seems to be adapting perfectly to his role as an aggressive bench scorer. Over the last 4 games he is averaging 16.2 pts, 2.2 assists, and 2.7 rebs per game while shooting good percentages. He looks much more comfortable, and has shown signs of improving his dribble-drive game and his post-up game while putting in solid effort on D.

Webster had a bit of a break out game against Toronto, putting up 15 points on solid shooting, looked much more confident, and had that awesome dunk. Hopefully that game is the sign of more good things to come for Martell, because he looked so good when he first came back from his injury, and having him contribute on a consistent basis would be huge for this team.

Jonny also had a bit of a breakout game against Toronto. In 23 minutes he had 10 pts on soild shooting with a couple 3s, 8 assits, only 2 TOs, and 6 rebs. Beyond these numbers, he looked like the old Jonny Fly, aggressively looking to make things happen for himself or his teammates, and didn't really make any boneheaded decisions. Also, he and Wes seem to be developing some chemistry, which I was hoping would happen one of these days.

Tolliver has quietly been soild the past 4 games, averaging 7.5 pts, 3.2 rebs per game while shooting 4-9 from 3. He has played solid D and continues to draw a lot of charges. His numbers will never jump off the page, but he is slowly returning to his pre-injury form, it seems.

Pek is Pek. Sometimes it seems like he is adapting, sometimes it doesn't. His energy and mobility on D are better than I expected. His post game has shown some flashes. He only played 6 minutes against Utah, but if you exclude that game, over his last 5 he is averaging 7 pts, 3.6 rebs and 1 block. I still think he has potential to adapt to this league and become a contributer. I hope so, because I love the dude.

Anyways, more important than the individual numbers is the fact that our bench as a unit has been improving lately. It has just been over the past 4 or 5 games or so, but it is something to keep watching. Over the past 4 games, going back to the loss to Houston, we have gone 1-3. However, in that same stretch, our net point differential is +3. Our bench has provided solid minutes in all these games, not allowing the opposition to blow the game open, and actually looking like a legit NBA rotation. As far as I can remember, this little stretch is the first time all season I have been consistently impressed with the play of our bench.

Whether this strong play will continue remains to be seen, but I think it will be a huge factor in our record for the rest of this season. Even good teams that can count on consistent production from their starters struggle to win games if their bench doesn't produce, so it is no wonder we have only won 11 games. However, if our bench continues this improved play, both individually and as a unit, I think we will continue to be competitive and give ourselves chances to win games on a nightly basis. Of course, to actually get Ws we will have to find a way to execute down the stretch and limit our ridiculous TOs, which is another story:

It definitely seems like the guys that have come back from injury (Flynn, Webster and Tolliver) are starting to get their groove back. Wes has looked good but I still hope that, at some point, he can do what he's doing now when he's starting.

Another aspect of this could be that the Wolves finally getting some home games.

Wes 23 games Home: 11 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists on .475 FG% .456 3pt%

Wes 23 games Away: 7.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists on .402 FG% .306 3pt %

compared to

Wes 35 games Starting: 8.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists on .456 FG% .412 3pt%

Wes 11 games off the Bench: 11.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists on .405 FG% .326 3pt%

He scores more as a backup, but he's way more efficient as a starter.

I don't think we should whip out our Jump To Conclusions Mat just yet. After all he was only a reserve for 11 games. With that said, I would generally prefer Brewer guarding the opposing teams starting shooting guard.

Totally agree with the OP and Cpfsf. I like the look of bench at the moment and it's the first time this season where we've looked a comfortable unit. Certain rotations that Rambis put out do make me scratch my head at times, against Houston it was sitting Beas out so long and there's been plenty of occasions this season where he's frozen out players for little reason. The Toronto game was great though, everything was spot on.

Flynn - Really shaky start but has shown enough in the last 2-3 games to make me believe that he's slowly becoming the Flynn of old. He's growing in confidence and it's great to see, he's had a hell of a hard time coming back and plenty on here have been, well, less than patient. We need to get him to develop that drive to the basket a bit more and I think we can rely on Johnny being a solid PG for years to come.

Webster - His comeback from injury was brilliant, went stagnant throughout January but a great game the other night against the Raptors. If he can become more consistent then he could be a key player for us. He seems to be one of the mature heads in the camp who the players respect, smart guy too.

Johnson - He's smashed through the rookie wall this past week or so, he's become more and more aggressive. It was painful to see him dragging along the perimeter for so long, if he can conjure up a mid-range jumper on a regular basis he could be deadly. Him and Flynn seem to have bonded really well and long may that continue. Keep it up Wes!

Tolliver - We really missed this guy, more than I anticipated anyway. He's a very solid all-round player and like Webster, seems really smart and a good head to have aboard. A real grafter and that's what us Minny fans love to see, taking charges, getting to the gym early and leaving after everyone else too.

Pekovic - Who doesn't love Pek? Although, at times can be incredibly frustrating to watch. He needs to get some sort of focus on court because he just plays so casual sometimes. His handle needs to improve, as do a few things but I'm really positive about him. He can block shots, has a solid post game and despite what some people say on here, CAN rebound. He's a long term project, I'd hate to be the guy who breaks the news to him if we got rid though, if Pek says it's a tuesday, it's a **** tuesday.

Some really solid points UK.

Its tough right now because we don't seem to have any real continuity, outside of Kevin Love, and that includes the bench. If we even had one guy (i'm looking at you Martell) who could be a consistent presence, it might help to stabilize the whole bench.

I think the 2nd unit really needs to improve their rebounding numbers. Wes should be getting more than 3 a game at his size.

Look at me, whining about rebounding when we have KEVIN LOVE on team. I think having him just makes anyone else look terrible, but our rebounding does take a hit when Love is on the bench.

nice post lobo, i think a blowout win and a game where pretty much everyone found a rhythm will do wonders for this team, regardless if it came against a bad team who had a horrible performance. all the bench guys are starting to really hit their stride which is definitely encouraging, because like you and most people, i thought we had outstanding depth on paper to start the season.

jonny is starting to find a grove and play under more control, wes is really showing how great of a shooter he is and always shows massive athletic, slashing and defensive potential - dudes gonna be great, pek shows flashes of being a very good back up, martell and tolly have been m.i.a for one reason or another over the previous weeks for the most part but recent performances are encouragaing. again, i think that win was very encouraging regardless of opposition. energy levels and chemistry have looked very good recently which is great, it'll be interesting to see how we come out against memphis.

p.s encouraging

Martell seems a bit irritated with being asked about his rhythm, I'm sure he has been frustrated. He definitely has a good head on his shoulders, I really hope this break out game was what he needed to get back on track. If we can get him and Wes to both contribute consistently off the bench along with the continued improvement of Jonny and Tolly and even Pek, our bench will be pretty dang nice.
