What kind of system would you like to see?

Watching the wolves for the last couple of years, I think many of us are not buying into the current system we run on the court. Personally, I have never been a fan of run and gun basketball but I don't think we are even doing anything resembling that anymore. I look at other teams and nearly all of them look more poised than us. They have more confidence in what they are doing and they execute moire consistently.

On paper I would think that we would be in the same breadth as the Kings, Nuggets, Pacers, Raptors, and Nets but we are behind all these teams and not even in the same league as a couple. I think getting some vets in here would be a big help but I don't think that will be enough. I think we need a system change.

What kind of system would you guys like to see run here? How can we use the players we do have to their strengths?

Pick and roll as the basic play with the rest of the team spacing the floor. Now when considering a more complicated offense, I prefer a system that doesn't require too much off-the-ball-movement. They look really lost out there trying to force things.

Also, if they run plays through Beasley, either get him the ball at the elbow/free throw line or at the 3 point line. I hate seeing him jab stepping just inside the perimeter and take a shot from there. Either get closer to the rim or take the three pointer.

But it all starts with good/great Defense. If I were a coach I'd start working on Defense first.

We're trying to run a run and gun basketball but we never even convert on fast breaks. We are so far away from being the team the management wanted to build up that sarcasm is almost the only way to go now.

As a system, I'd like some bad ass slow defensive minded system. Kinda like the Detroit Pistons played in their championship run. I also liked last years Bobcats - they pretty much had average talent other than Wallace and SJAX but went to the playoffs by playing defense night in, night out.

However, it doesn't work out for us anymore unless we get a coaching change and have another roster overhaul. Our best player is a mediocre defender. Every other player (but Tolliver maybe) is average or (way) below average defensively and we gave away one of our 3 best defenders recently. Every chance of becoming a dirty, slow paced team is pretty much gone.

Honestly, even if we don't run such a system. All I want is that defense becomes the main priority for our team. We're always going to find ways to score. First thing I would do is pull everyone out who isn't focussed on defense. We would pretty much play with Tolliver alone on the court then, though.

Use basic middle pick-n-Roll, but the focus needs to be on pressure defense. You need to figure out your strength and work through that. Rubio running a p/R with either Love or Beasley would create offensive situations. My issue right now is having the right personal around Rubio.

"Systems" work great in college, when the coach is the head ego not the player. In the pro it is difficult to get people to buy into a program.

I think our offense is too complicated, which frustrates young players, and without direction. Other than Beasley you do not have anyone that can break down a defense. Could these role players provide positive offense if Rubio is able to break down the defense?

First things first.

Play guys in position. Wes Johnson is not a shooting guard. Beasley is closer to a 4 imo. The guy would have better chances of "guarding" other 4's.

We have to many tweeners, Whats Randolph? I know he can play C, but I've read that he doesn't want to... granted thats when he was in GS. Beasley? Tolly?

We have no ball movement, almost completely a jump shooting team. We need MEN who want to drive it to the hole like MEN and finish like MEN. Flynn was that guy his rookie year, and i'm excited to see him next season, when he's completely 100% healthy.

But i'd worry about defense than anything this summer.

I'd like to see something where the players hardly have to think. I've always liked Rudy T's system with the championship Rockets. Zip the ball all around the perimeter and inside/out. Skip the ball and send it all the way around the horn. Run good two-man games inside and out. You can use Love, Beasley, Johnson, Darko, Tolliver, and Webster inside (I'm for trading Pek). Space the floor. Dallas is similar in today's league.

Obviously when you say system you think offense first, but defense is our glaring weakness, of course.

I don't think we'll ever have a good defensive system with Rambis as head coach.






I guess the bottom line is I think Rambis's system makes the players think so much that they're easy to guard. Defenses are able to think more than us and that's what puts our players at a disadvantage.


The Wolves would be best in the simplest of offenses.

I'd have to agree with everyone who wants a simpler offense. With the youngest team in the league you can't get too crazy with complex schemes. The players have a hard enough time adjusting to the NBA as it is, why make it harder? The Jazz have run the same few plays for basically forever under Sloan and have had success. While they haven't ever been a power house it at least proves you can have a lot of success by keeping it simple. I'd also like it if we actually took advantage of our mismatches. When we have Wes at SG and Beas at SF there are bound to be times when they can use their size to their advantage. The most important thing though is to actually have a system. It seems like our team has no identity, and they look different every night. Everybody has a different role on any given night outside of Kevin Love. Some continuity would be nice.

From what I've seen, Beasley is much better at defending 3s.
