I riffed on an interesting idea on the trade board. I don't think I'd do it, but interesting:
Wolves Trade: #1 + Flynn + Ridnour
Wolves Get: #5 + #6 + Devin Harris
Utah Trades: Harris + Millsap + #6
Utah Gets: #1 + Thompson + Casspi + Ridnour
Kings Trade: #5 + Casspi, Thompson
Kings Get: Millsap, Flynn
I wouldn't do it, but it's interesting if we like Rubio and we are willing to pay for a better fallback plan if it takes him a while to adapt to the NBA.

I like how the espn trader says this costs us 10 wins. They loves them some Ridnour!

Kind of ambivalent on this one.
It's pretty fair value if we could land Burks and Bismack with the draft picks. HOWEVER, I don't know if I could stomach giving Kahn another crack at the #5 and #6 picks again.

Re: MIN + UTA + SAC
I would rather trade the #1 for a young bonafide All Star center (Horford / Bogut / Bynum / (Marc) Gasol S&T).
..BUT, decent value all around.
Utah would have to be really high on Irving to give up those kind of pieces though.

Any way we could add more or get less to have Gordon Hayword coming our way? Maybe swap with Wes Johnson?

I think Utah is pretty high on Gordon Hayward, plus I like Wes - I can see Wes making a significant leap next season.

No. 5 and 6 would mean that we would definitely miss out on Irving, Williams, and Kanter, and would probably miss out on Biyombo.
Harris, Burks (who we would have to reach for), and Motiejunas? Leonard? One of the Morris Twins? Just isn't anywhere near enough value for Kyrie Irving (you know, the #1 pick you wouldn't trade for Bogut and Jennings).

I would bet that Biyombo is right at #4 or #5 right now. I'd have basically the clear cut top 2 as Irving/Williams, followed by Kanter, Biyombo, Kemba, possibly Jonas V.
I still have some faith in this draft in terms of valuable players in it, just not a ton of stars. Meaning that from about 6-20 no one really stands out IMO, but they all should be quality contributors somewhere.
Trading for that package is pretty tempting, I'm a fan of Harris and would hope he could return to form where he was one of the best pg/sg defenders in the entire NBA, and of course he could play with Rubio then. I'd pry have to make sure that Biyombo and Burks were on the board and then trade Irving instead of doing it pre-draft.

Yeah I wouldn't do it. If I'm trading down with Utah I'd rather try to snag Favors.

Re: MIN + UTA + SAC
If we're convinced about Rubio coming over, being better than Irving, Irving not being special, and/or whatever other rationale you'd use in dealing the #1 and not Rubio should hell freeze over and we actually get the #1..........then yes I'd do this trade.
I like Harris a lot and two high picks could still fill the areas of need or be packaged in some form.

Any Utah trade involving the #1 has to involve favors.
Getting a front line of Favors-Love-Gay would be great for marketing in a liberal state.

This trade is not realistic considering management contracts and the fact that we dont own our own pick next year. As the above said, trade the pick for a known quantity if at all.

Owning the MEM pick allows us to trade our pick this year. The Stepien Rule says that you can't make a trade that would potentially leave you without a first round pick in the next two drafts. It doesn't say that it has to be your pick.
==================================
While I wouldn't be in favor of this trade either, I would not be shocked to see something like this. If Kahn thinks Rubio and Kyrie are at all close in potential, and one needs to be the horse we ride, we'd clearly get more trade value out of Kyrie than Rubio right now.
The question then becomes who would give us the most for Irving. I think UTA is near the top of that list. The reasons are in a post where I suggested a straight up trade of Favors for Irving
shrink wrote:Kyrie Irving for Derrick Favors?
WHY FOR MIN? Favors the better player? Grow to be the defensive counterpart to Love? Or would he need more size?
WHY FOR UTA? Irving will make the cash-conscious Jazz more money, and help sell more season tickets to those disgruntled by the Jazz trading Deron Williams and the departure of Jerry Sloan.
The reason a micro-market like Salt Lake City can even have an NBA franchise is because they have tremendous fan loyalty that keeps the arena filled. They've averaged 99% attendance for the last 5 years. Even then, they strive to just break even. It would be a big risk to hold onto Favors when it's going to be Irving that's getting all the completely cost-free press for the next six months.
I'm also in the camp that would trade Irving for Favors, but I think that if the pick is #1, I think it's more valuable than the list of players we talk about that are good (not great), have $10 mil+ contracts, and may be gettable.

If Rubio is coming then I would consider this....
I'd target a center - Biyombo or Kanter -- and then either Kawhi Leonard or Burks. I think I'm higher on Leonard.
