They were discussing this on Rube Chat, too, and I want to know if Rambis plans to implement a different offensive system that is suitable for a pass-first guard, why couldn't he have done so 2 years ago when we had Sessions and before he ruined Flynn?

This. I wouldn't mind him wearing his heart on his sleeve for once, show a bit of passion, rather than just standing around in that suit doing nothing.

Lets say Rambis does in fact come back to coach next year and just retool our assistant coaches, would any of the fallowing be realistic candidates? Dave Joerger (MEM), Steve Clifford (ORL), Bill Bayno (POR), Ron Adams (CHI), Dwane Casey (DAL).

I don't see why a top assistant from a successful team would want to become a top assistant on a crappy team under an incompetent coach. Unless they do so with the expectation that Rambis would probably be fired early and that they would be promoted to the head coach position. :dontknow:

Yeah, I didn't think any of them would probably be realistic choices. Just thought I'd throw out a couple names.

At what point in time did Ramon Sessions become a pass-first point guard? He was, and still is, a decent enough ball handler to penetrate and score (or dish off a little) inside, but he is not a guy that substantially creates for others.

As far as good assistants - if one feels that the talent this team goes into next season with can be made to play passable to above average defense, then a job here could be viewed as a launching point for a career. If the roster changes, Rambis returns, we hire an assistant intent on focusing on defense and the defense improves, that assistant would get substantial credit for the change. Thibodeau wasn't the biggest assistant coach prize until the Celtics got the big 3 established and the top defensive team in the league. Turning the league's worst defensive team, with Love, Beasley, Darko and a group of players in their first 3 years getting the Lion's share of the minutes, into a middle-of-the-road defensive team could genuinely bring notoriety to a resume.

You mean like how Dave Joerger is a top candidate in Houston?

I was wondering the same thing.

As long as he's learned his lesson and hires a coach that's willing to adapt his systems to the talent that's in place, then I don't think it matters at all if the coach is hired before the draft.

The problem with the Flynn draft is that afterwards, Kahn went and hired a guy who rigidly sticks to an offensive system that requires very specialized players. Most NBA coaches aren't dumb enough to do that.

You are correct. I just get used to the Whittman's and Rambis's of the world, and forget that good coaches are able to adapt to players.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Based on that interview, can we all just assume that Rambis will be back now? I cannot believe we are giving this guy another chance, but it makes since that we would. It just irks me because there is probably a 30% chance (if that) that a changing of the guard while keeping the same head coach actually pans out, and a less than 10% chance that it pans out to a championship contending level. It is so incredibly likely that Rambis gets canned midseason, that all this retooling garbage seems like a complete waste of a season.
