Derrick Williams Workout Today for CAVS

Post#1 » by rennytwentyone » Tue Jun 14, 2011 3:51 pm

I'm interested to hear the thoughts of Givony (from DraftExpress) and what he picks up from other GM's today at Derrick Williams' workout for the Cavs today.

Hope it's enough positivity to make me feel alright if we take him and have a logjam.

His mother, Rhoma Moore, confirmed this morning that Williams will work out for the Cavaliers on Tuesday but said it is uncertain if he would do so for anyone else at this point.

EDIT: I don't see why Williams wouldn't workout for us. It wouldn't make sense all around if he didn't.

I thought we were working out D-Will and Kanter the 16th?

They are. I just don't understand why that was thrown in there, unless he has a change in heart after? Still would be stupid.

P.S. I'm hyped to hear about our workouts with those two, I'm really torn on who I think we should take there, so I'm hoping that helps clear things up. It's really a tough case of BPA vs. Need.

Derrick Williams via Twitter:

"Just got done workin out with the Cavs. Went Well ! "

Hoping to see some analysis pop up soon from Givony, and other sources.

EDIT: Realized that this was a private workout, so probably won't be as insightful as the public ones, but I'm sure word will travel.

Varejao + 4th (Valanciunas) for 2nd (Williams) + Pekovic.
Makes too much sense for either team to not happen. You get the ideal fit (Jonas) and upgrade in the big man rotation even if he decides and/or is forced by the circumstances to stay in Europe.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

I really would love a Varjeao and Valanucious for Derrick Williams and Darko Millicic... If needed I would give you cash and 2nd round picks... I always have thought Irving > Derrick Williams but now I realize that they are both so unique and truly intriguing prospects and want them both... Your team immediately fills ur biggest hole at center and we get who we want! Win-Win!

i hate that trade. whoever gets the best player wins. Sideshow Bob and a lesser pick in a two player draft doesn't work IMHOAOMOMSTT

So I was trying to come up with a different way for the Cavs to trade up to #2 for Williams (without using Varejao and his large contract).

How about getting Memphis involved with something like:

MN out: #2, (Ellington?)
MN in: #4, Mayo

Cavs out: #4, Hickson
Cavs in: #2

Memphis out: Mayo
Memphis in: Hickson, (Ellington?)

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

I'd like for someone to take number 2 without us having to take Varejao (ugh), and I think Mayo could work out well for the Wolves despite his need to get paid at the same time as the rest of the roster...

But Memphis tried to trade Mayo for pocket change. Mayo had a good playoffs...but not so good where he represents the difference in value between number 2 and 4 in a 2 player draft IMO. Even if they threw in another decent role-player I'd still be hesitant to trade quite honestly...

I guess I'd do it if Valanciunas buyout was sure, Cleveland paid for the buyout, we got another lottery pick to draft Biyombo, and Mayo was in the deal.

Yeah, if we could trade down and draft Jonas, that would terrific ... I just don't know that we really want Mayo and I'm not sure what other veteran SG would be attainable along with adding a mid-round pick.

Would be my guess that Houston will make a strong push to move up and acquire one of these big, but like the Cavs, they have nothing I want in terms of SG's ... I'd like DeRozan if the Raptors wanted to slide up.

^^ I think Mayo could work well here...he's sort of like our ultimate dream for Ellington. He'd be a change-of-pace from WJ and has the shooting chops and handle to complement Rubio.
