Cleveland has some assets to use in a trade down that for various reasons don't fit here or are too small to be appealing by themselves (Sessions, Hickson, 14.5 mil TPE, Christian Eyenga, 2013+2015 MIA 1sts, #32+54 2011 picks).
Since they apparently want to hang onto Varejao, and are the most obvious trade down partners, my challenge is to find a 3rd team to send us an asset that is a better fit. Examples would be an upgrade at SG or C, a pick we can nab Burks or Brooks with, or future 1st round picks likely to be in the teens or better. In this scenario we would be drafting a Center at 4, and sending Pekovic or Milicic or Webster to Cleveland.
An example that was rumored an then shot down was Det sending Hamilton to CLE along with 8, and Cleveland sending us 4+8 for 2. (I still think that could work if Cleveland also sent Sessions to Det).
The most obvious piece to be moved is Hickson. He will be entering the last year of his rookie deal at 2.4 million. I think Williams will be best as a PF (Givony is also big on him being a PF, not SF), and Cleveland could fill Hickson's spot with Williams. You also have to remember that some teams that also want 2 (Was, Tor, Phx, Mil), may not want to help Cleveland get Williams unless it is a real no-brainer for them to do so.
A few scenarios:
Mem sends Mayo to Cle for Hickson. Cle sends 4+Mayo to us for Webster+2. saves Mem 3.2 mil in cap room they can spend on re-signing Gasol, adds frontcourt depth, opens PT for sam young and xavier henry.
Det sends 8+Maxiell to Cle for Hickson+20. Cle sends 4+8 to us. We send 2 to Cle and 20 to Det for 4+8.
Cle sends Hickson+32 to PHX for 13+Pietrus. Cle sends 4+13 to us for 2. We take a C at 4 and Brooks/Burks at 13.
Cha sends Diaw +9 to Cle for Hickson+20. Cle sends 4+9 to us. We send 2 to Cle and 20 to CHA for 4+9.

minny sends:
#2
pek
flynn
minny gets:
#4
roddy beaubois
eyenga
#32
clevland sends:
#4
jj hickson
eyenga
#32
cleveland gets:
#2
pek
dallas sends
roddy beaubois
dallas gets:
jj hickson
jonny flynn
why for us:
get to select jonas!!!!!!!!!!!!
and we pick up an excellent young combo guard in roddy beaubois who can find minutes at both guard spots...also pick up an intruging 4th or 5th wing in eyenga...32 is a nice pick as well as it allows a cheap contract and/or a stash of one of the better internationals who slip because of contract concerns.
why for cleveland:
aquire derrick williams and kyrie irving to kick start their rebuilding, only primary asset they really give up is jj hickson who plays the same position as williams.
why for dallas:
roddy buckets never got into the flow or caught up after missing training camp and half the season. the emergence(sp?) of hero jj barea who they will likey re sign will make it hard to find time for roddy. dallas has no back up to dirk whatsoever and could really use a young pf like hickson who still has a good amount of potential. jonny flynn would have a chance to turn things around and probably be that 5th guard for dallas.

That's an interesting deal kiwiadam. I didn't think it salary matched, but then I saw that dallas has 2 TPE's big enough to make it happen.
That would be pretty enticing to Dallas.
I don't have much use for eyenga though, but Beaubois could be interesting next to Rubio in a Jet Terry role. Points for creativity.

Re: Challenge: Find a 3rd team for a trade down with CLE
3 way deals take too long to organize. There is no way something like this could happen unless agreed upon beforehand and everyone's guy falls to them.
Instead of a 3 way deal, I'm thinking of deals that can get us plenty of movable assets and pieces, then just keep dealing. Not a 3 teamer, but a 2 teamer in order to make continuous trades throughout the night. I'm fine with something like:
MN and DET
#2 for #8, #33, and Rip Hamilton.
I'd hold out to see if we could get more, like I'd include Flynn/#20/Pek for a future 1st or Stuckey.
From there, draft BPA @8. The major drag with this is that we probably don't get a C unless someone falls.
Maybe we could quickly shop Flynn/#20/Pek for a swap of whomever we take @ 8 and the C we want. Or take a SG as Rip insurance.
The #33 is better for a euro stash than the #20 anyway I'd think.
If Rip doesn't wanna play here, it should be easy enough to trade him to a contender or buy him out at the deadline.
The deal isn't perfect, but I think getting Rip and some smaller picks/assests could give us more options going forward. We split up the #2 for less than market value, but we get pieces that we can utilize to make us better short-term and long term.
