The most likely NYK offer that works financially is:
MIN GETS: Tony Douglas + Renaldo Balkman
NYK GETS: Jonny Flynnhttp://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=3l5wqhmDouglas 1,145,640 (2,067,880)
Balkman 1,675,000 1,675,0002011-13 2,820,640 3,742,880
J Flynn 3,414,720 (4,329,865)
(parentheses are for team options)
Now, if MIN hated Flynn and no one else wanted him, they would decline the team option and he'd only cost them $3.4. MIN has no use for another 6' 8" SF/PF in Balkman, and he's guaranteed for two years, so this would mean if they wanted Douglas for one year, he'd cost $4.5 mil, with an additional team option at $2.
I don't see any incentive here for MIN to do this deal.
I understand that Flynn is worth very little here. He's in a bad system, coming off a promising rookie year but a dreadful season 2 and an injury. Even if Rambis is moved, Flynn is unlikely to get the minutes to rehab his value to MIN. However, I think he has value to a few other teams that can offer him the minutes. Even though this time of the year we over-value draft picks, I think many would agree that Flynn has a better chance of becoming a useful player than most of the prospects outside the lottery .. even at 17. Flynn also might have some additional ticket-selling ability in NYK from Syracuse fans.
If the trade included the 17 pick, I'd consider it, but otherwise, I'd look elsewhere for offers. I think he should be able to garner a non-lotto pick, and/or some financial relief.
