Re: No 2012 1st a Good Thing?
The ONLY good thing about losing our pick is that for the first time in 5 years we have ZERO incentive to tank. (unless you consider Taylor drooling over the $ he can sell a high 2nd round pick for
)

Maybe I should've said "Not a Bad Thing" instead of "a Good Thing"
One interesting twist is what happens if there's no season.

you guys have enough talent already, the thing is putting it together. the best you can hope for is for the team to have a sense of urgency this season and improve drastically. you should hope that ricky feels he needs to prove his worth again and balls out hard. i can't help but think that kahn still needs to make a move though. ya'll are loaded at the forward spots.

or if the new CBA requires two years out of high school

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt

Not in any way shape or form is not having that pick as an asset a good thing.
You have to understand how limiting that pick hanging over like a storm cloud has to have been for Kahn as the GM. Not that he hasn't shot himself in the foot a few times as well as he obviously wasted the #6 pick in 09 and may have missed with the #4 in 10 (although personally I think Wesley Johnson will prove to be a good pick/player) and I think he wasted the second best asset that was left to him by McHale in Jefferson. Call me crazy but i'm pretty sure had he waited for Jefferson to fully recover from his knee injury and had him when he was dropping 24/12 for two months last year that he might've landed more then two late first rounders for him.

No way it's a good thing, but it isn't 100% bad. I like the "no excuse for tanking" reason. I'd also add that there is no guaranteed 2012 salary. True, the player would probably be worth it (though the later in the draft, the less that's true), but 2012 is not a year we need to be adding salary.
We need to do all we can to win as many games as possible the next two years, try to shoot through the middle and be a play-off level team ASAP, and start changing our dynamics here.

If a lockout eliminates the entire season, how does that affect draft picks owed for 2012 and the 2012 NBA Draft itself?

If the entire season gets wipped out then i'm fairly sure they would redo the lottery based on this years standings giving the Clippers no worse then the 4th pick and giving them the most ping pong balls.
Edit: Though if the players from this current draft just sat out a year without getting paid and their was still no labor deal in place its hard to imagine many under classmen would actually declare for next years draft.

Not having another positive asset is a negative. Even if all we did next year was trade it for the future, it would be good. Being without it is bad.
Worst of all, it was for Marko Jaric.

Not having the "yeah he'll help, but we'll still miss the playoffs and possibly fall out of the first 10" argument as a reason not to do moves is a positive.

Exactly! Not having a pick means there are no excuses for losing, at all. We have to go at least .500 next season.

I'm starting to change my views on this. I really can't find much redeeming value unless you think that having no excuses counts for something. All we did was draft and keep Derrick Williams. I'm not saying that we should make a move for the sake of making a move, but that lost draft pick hasn't forced Minnesota to become contenders at all.
