Brandon Roy amnestied

Post#1 » by shrink » Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:16 pm

I don't expect his knees to last two years, and he can't play big minutes or start, but would you put money down on the guy in a blind bid?

The deal has to be four years.

100% done? Or 85% done?

I mentioned 4 years, and that may be technically true, but he would probably be a candidate for medical retirement after two season.

Done for this year.

I suspect he could try and get stem cell treatment abroad that could prolong his playing career in the future.

For now though, he would have been a medical retirement this year if doing so didn't preclude the Blazers from signging Crawford. Not sure why, but reportedly amnestying him was the only way that allowed them to sign Crawford.

Sources say Brandon Roy to announce medical retirement due to degenerative knees, possibly as soon as today

Instead of seeking a medical retirement for 27-year-old two-time All-Star Brandon Roy, the Portland Trail Blazers will waive the injured wing under the amnesty clause, reports Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski. Roy announced his retirement last week due to continued knee problems -- he's had three knee surgeries in 18 months. The Blazers had said they'd seek a medical retirement, which would remove Roy's cap hit from the books beginning in the 2012-13 season.

Instead, Wojnarowski reports, the team will waive Roy before Friday's deadline to immediately clear his large salary off of Portland's books. Roy is due $64 million over the next four years, and he'll get paid either way. The biggest wrinkle in the amnesty waiver is that another team can now claim him by bidding on a portion of his contract, as the L.A. Clippers did for Chauncey Billups. That team could then attempt to convince Roy -- who clearly still had something in the tank last April in the NBA playoffs -- to return to the court in time.

How low can you bid?
Can you bid below the veterans minimum?
If so, I'd put in a bid.

Then you would have to waive or trade someone.

I expect there is at least 1 big trade in the works. 3 for 1 or 4 for 2 for Martin still seems like the best possibility at this point. But yeah, I'd take a flyer on Roy for $200,000 a year.

According to lipoli on the ESPN boards Martin is no longer a target, so yeah.

I wouldn't bother. Roy is done.

Roy has no plans to play. He has been told if he continues playing he will not be able to walk in the future.

Portland only used the amnesty on him to get their MLE to sign Jamal Crawford for the year. They couldn't wait until the league decided to give them a DPE (disabled player exception, which is worth 5 million for one year) before the amnesty deadline passed (tomorrow).

Otherwise we would have waited for Roy to medically retire.
