I hear people saying that he shouldn't get max, because max players are better defenders. I don't think all max players are good defenders - NBA teams pay for scorers.

I hear people saying that he shouldn't get the max, because max players are #1 scorers. This is a good point, Kevin Love gets the same points (25 PPG, #5 in nba), but he doesn't create his own shot.

I don't hear that while max players generally create their own shot, how many pull in 15 RB/game?

The reason it's hard to fit Love into the role of "max player" is because it's hard to fit him into any specific role. Nobody does what he does. He may be lesser in some areas, but does the extremeness of his positives outweigh that?

I think yes. My belief is that in all the ways he contributes to a team's success, both on the floor, as a role model to young players, and at the box office, the guy deserves a max deal. I believe his style of super-complimentary play, as well as Rubio's, will vault some near-star-level player into superstardom. I think we should get that guy in trade (at his non-max salary), to begin with, but with him, Love, and Rubio, we'll have a functional big three that still gives other players plenty of room to contribute.

It starts though with giving Love the max.

Kevin Love, Timberwolves (5th)

Most people around the league believe this is as close to a sure thing as possible. Love has been informed, shall we say, at every step of the Timberwolves' rebuilding process the last couple of years. It doesn't mean he had veto power, but he was not surprised by anything management has done. And just as it was important to surround Ricky Rubio with enough talent to make his arrival easier, the Wolves needed to improve both the talent and the coaching dynamism to keep West coaster Love from seeking greener pastures. Exit Kurt Rambis; enter Rick Adelman. Exit Jonny Flynn; enter Rubio. With rookie Derrick Williams and vet guard J.J. Barea in the mix, Minnesota's core group is much deeper than even a season ago, and Love has noticed. And if the Wolves are going to continue the newfound era of positive pub they're getting, giving Love every dollar agent Jeff Schwartz wants is imperative.

"Minnesota will pay Love," an executive with another team said Sunday; the max the Wolves can give him is a five-year deal in excess of $80 million. (Rose got more because, under Video the new collective bargaining rules, he was eligible for additional "rookie pool" money after winning the NBA's Most Valuable Player award last season.)

If Amare and Rudy Gay get the max, then Love does.

In my opinion he deserves the max. I like the core we have now and think we should simply maintain it.

If Gilbert Arenas got the max, then Beasley does too.

If the gloves don't fit, you must acquit.

Once Love signs an extension, my "expectations" of the Wolves making a trade is going to be high ... I believe 100% that Klove will be assured that we can upgrade our squad prior to the deadline, so come the off-season, we'll be in position to key in on a quality FA. I think that's the bottom-line short-term ... a shot to make the playoffs this year, but for sure head into next season with 5 guys we believe can win long-term.
Flip response to Love wanting out, "He has no reason to be upset, you're either a part of the problem or a part of the solution"

That post was just pointing holes in moss_is_1's logic.

I've already said Love probably deserves the max -- I just don't know if paying him the max is the best decision for the Wolves. If he keeps up his offensive output from the last few games I'll be happy to eat my words. Is that okay for you, or am I still a hard-headed idiot?
