He (& Evans) are holding his man to 0.87 PPP (points per possession). Which is respectable. Rubio's best defensive attribute is man-to-man defense. He's holding his man to 0.61 PPP and creating TOs at 16% rate.

Anyone has an explanation about this assessment?

I glanced at the image on my phone at home and now I can't see it at work but I think it said he was ranked around 180 overall? That would put him, on average, at about the sixth best defender on a given team. Sorry but that just doesn't pass the smell test to me. Anyone who watches the Wolves games can see he is easily the best defender on the team and he impacts the game on both ends. I know Synergy is the leader in stats but something seems dubious. Whatever they are measuring is not capturing his game.

Does Love have in school suspension or at home suspension? ie: was he physically at the game or was he at home tweeting?

Actually, it says 219 overall. Which I thought was inaccurate initially. I would have guessed that Rubio would be somewhere in the double-digits or something.

His man to man defense was ranked 20 overall.

Hey KF10, I asked Tsherkin your question since I'm not really that familiar with the stats myself. Here's his answer (with a follow-up post on the next page).

TL;DR on my response:

Synergy tracks things per-possession and there were some omitted categories from that image. Also, the rankings aren't exactly precision science, either.

You need to typically look at the specific plays involved, too; sample size kills some of those numbers (and thus his ranking) and also, some of them aren't plays where individuals can be expected to kill it defensively.

Long Version
=

For example, Synergy tracks offensive possessions in transition and other no-plays as two separate categories that don't show up on their defensive plays page for each player, only on the offensive plays. When you're looking at someone who's ranked 20th overall in isolation defense and is also leading the league in steals (which have primarily come in transition, out of isos or on no-play possessions), you're looking at a player who isn't fairly evaluated by his statistically-based overall rank on that page.

Look at the score% and shooting foul numbers that he posts; they're pretty low across the board and 0.61 PPP in isos is ridiculous. The only consistently effective way teams have been attacking him is with a screen. You'll know as well or better as I do that he doesn't habitually sneak under screens on shooters, he fights over (and occasionally fouls), blitzing the ball-handler.

He's a good defender, and Synergy shows it, but you just need to learn how to read it because it was programmed by people with no sense of how to create a GUI and with MS Silverlight, which is kind of like the anti-Christ of developer platforms. *shudder*

EDIT: Oh, final comment; guys not named Rubio need to open their mouths on defense. If I see Rubio blind-sided by a screen he didn't see coming again, I'm gonna have to go Wayne Brady on some folks...

Question for you guys regarding Beasleys play last night.

The obvious, 21 shot attempts is ridiculous.

I went and looked at his shot chart, he missed a lot of buckets in the paint last night. To me that's actually encouraging, at least he's not settling for long jumpers. He struggled to score, it happens, of course it's happened a lot to him this year. I guess I'm just glad he was attacking, because most nights NBA players don't miss that many shots in the paint, let alone never get a foul call.

Your thoughts?

BBref has Rubio DRtg at 99. Which is pretty damn good for a guard. Pretty much elite.

*DRtg is relative to team defense

At one of the wolves ticket holder events we went to Brunswick and had unlimited bowling and arcade. The players showed up for an hour and a half or so and Pek spent the whole time playing one of those games with the guns where you shoot aliens for the entire time as fans cycled through the 2nd player spot. The players were supposed to rotate to photo and autograph stations but he didn't. Then when they left Pek was the last one there with a guy trying to drag him away from the game. That's when I knew that nobody tells Pek what to do.

This is beautiful.

He got the ball in the post a lot and missed a lot in there. The problem with him, besides him posting up and not Pek, is that he doesnt go strong. He always seems to try to avoid contact. Be powerful and draw the foul. At least then youll get Fts if you miss the shot

Yeah, although many of his shots were in the paint, there is a huge difference between taking it strong to the hole and posting up but shooting contested fade-aways. Last night it was mostly the latter for Beas, unfortunately. He'll have plenty of chances to bounce back tonight, and I would hope that he learned his lesson last night. That said, I have no reason to expect anything different at this point, but I can keep hoping can't I? As has been the case his entire career, he's his own worst enemy.
