Rose/Rondo/Deron/Paul for Rubio?

Post#1 » by metalinguss » Wed Feb 8, 2012 3:46 pm

Not that I want to trade Rubio but hypothetically, if the Bulls, Celtics, Nets and Clippers all offered us their respective star PGs for Ricky. Which one would would be the best fit for this team?

Not trading Rubio is NOT an option, you have to chose one. 8-)

This is right now, including considerations for the future/age and all that? Or for a single season?

Rose and Paul? Yes. Rondo and Deron? No. Deron Williams is probably the better player, but I don't want anything to do with the guy that runs Jerry Sloan out of Utah.

I think Rubio will be better than Rondo, is pretty close already. Paul and Deron are older and I'm not sure they fit as well with the core. Derrick Rose would be an absolutely amazing addition but he's a Chicago boy and we'd never get him for Rubio.

I can say this; there's clearly no serious advantage for Rondo in any meaningful area besides finishing at the rim. Rubio also struggles on his longer two-pointers (for now), but he's a better 3pt shooter and a considerably better FT shooter as well. They're similar in their capacity to make plays, but Rubio is bigger and has that advantage. Rebounding is not a concern for the Wolves, but Rubio's pretty solid in that respect as well and defensively, well, little need be said there.

There isn't a huge advantage to be gained by grabbing Rondo, or really any tangible advantage. There is the possibility that teams will sag off of Rajon and pack the paint however, which is undesirable. So I'm not seeing that as a positive aspect of that trade. For some of those other guys, like Paul and Rose, on the other hand, well, they're obviously more advanced in terms of their ability to score and Paul in particular replicates a lot of what Rubio brings on the help defense side of things.

Still, when you consider contracts and age, I can't really look at any of those guys as huge upgrades even when you factor in scoring as a variable. I think someone like Rose, Paul or Deron would be an instant lift to the team offense with their scoring ability, because that's exactly the type of player missing from this team (a dynamic perimeter scorer) but given Love and whatever Pek brings, Rubio, maybe moving Beasley for someone less awful, they don't really need to move the motor of their offense, you know? I doubt it'd help all that much. I realize the OP isn't suggesting a trade, but Minny is developing pretty well at this point. Once they quit hanging onto the Beez and Darko, this team is going to take off.

EDIT: More so than they already are, I mean.

The obvious choice is Rose, but I don't think he's the best option for this team. He's the best scorer but this team needs a PG that can create easy baskets -when Rubio is out offense dries most of the times-, and in that aspect of the game he's probably the worst of the 4 PGs.

I wouldn't trade Rubio for Rondo because they are quite similar and I think Rubio is the best player in comparison.

With Deron Williams I really don't know what to think about him. He has probably all the tools but the incident in Utah and the game against the Nets where he went into a personal battle with Rubio every time Ricky was defending him that caused Deron made a lot of turnovers and a terrible FG% -that made me remember what happened with Westbrook and his personal battles with Rubio and Barea- makes me think twice about his personality.

So I would definitely choose Paul of those 4. He's a bit undersized but his defense is still good and also gets a lot of steals as Rubio.

Great post.

I pick D-Will with Paul a close 2nd choice. D-will gets the edge because while CP3 is the superior playmaker, Deron has a more versatile offensive arsenal compared to Paul. Rose is great but these two are better suited for our system.

That being said, Rubio's not going anywhere.

Considering the contracts (years) they are currently signed to, the only one Id choose is rose.
