2 Trades...Does the value work?

Post#1 » by rugbyrugger23 » Mon Mar 5, 2012 5:49 pm

Like many I think Wolves need to upgrade SG and SF. Here are 2 trades I like to get Wolves the best fitting players...

Trade 1 (more simple but still grand)

Wolves IN: Batum
Wolves OUT: DWill, Jazz 1st Rd Pick

Blaz IN: Rondo, Wilcox
Blaz OUT: Batum, Felton, Some 2nd rd picks

Celtics IN: DWill, Felton, Jazz 1st Rd Pick, Blaz 2nd rd picks
Celtics OUT: Rondo, Wilcox

Trade 2 (complex and grand)

Wolves IN: Harden, Batum, JO
Wolves OUT: DWill, Beasley, Pek, Jazz 1st Rd Pick
*Note: Wolves trade Pek and will need to go all-in on center free agent

Thunder IN: Pek, Beasley, Jazz 1st Rd Pick
Thunder OUT: Harden, Perkins
*Note: This trade requires Thunder to really see Pek as perfect center and upgrade to Perkins.

Blaz IN: Rondo, Perkins, Wilcox
Blaz OUT: Batum, Felton, Camby, 2nd Rd Picks

Celtics IN: DWill, Felton, Camby, Blaz 2nd Rd Picks
Celtics OUT: Rondo, JO, Wilcox

I think trade one makes some sense - trade 2 doesn't work. I think the Wolves would only do that first trade, however, if Batum was extended immediately. Otherwise, it's too big of a risk to let DWill and the Utah pick go with the thought that we would match a potentially ugly, front-loaded deal. The Celtics would likely be the ones to give pause to that offer....

Portland has LMA, not sure they would be looking to add DWill.

I like trade #1 but there is absolutely no way OKC accepts deal #2. If they would, we would just deal with them directly and get Harden on this team.

As for this post, I think you have to read this more carefully. Neither scenario has DWill going to Portland.

Batum needs to be signed before he is worth trading for... trade one is plausible.

No. We don't pay 6 mil. + loss of salary cap room for picks that can be bought for 3 mil.

Ridiculous. How often do picks get sold for 3m and how often in a strong draft? It's actually fairly rare that those deals happen for 3m. Last year the Lakers traded Vujajic on a full expiring deal in a weaker draft in the range of this offer (Marshon Brooks).

Don't know if you've been paying attention but it happens quite frequently.

Would you happen to have a few examples over the last three years specifically.

I'm not going to go through drafts over and over again but if you do you'll notice it's no problem to acquire a late 1st (28-30) and buy yourself up in the early 20's.

Last year the Timberwolves bought themselves all the way down from 20 to 43. So if it works that way it works the other way, too.

The T'Wolves got a heck of a lot more than 3m for going all the way down to 43.

Walton would be our second highest paid player, no way Kahn wastes ten percent of our cap on him.

The pick was in the high 20's which means it's worth a bit more than 3 mil. and Jonny Flynn still had a little value at the time. :dontknow:

Huh? We're talking about basically the same level pick in a stronger draft. 3m is 3m simply because that's the NBA money cap. Right now with the new CBA rules teams can't send more than 3m a year. It's very rare you'll see those kinds of deals anymore. It's these absorb salary deals that are far more likely.

You can not spend more than 3m on 1 pick but you can buy two and then trade up. Even if it cost 6mil. to trade up to say #25 that's still better than having Luke Walton eat up your salary. Not a chance you'll get rid of him unless the Lakers pick is 20th or higher which won't be the case.

3mil. and a mid 2nd round pick and pick 28th-30 are yours. :dontknow:
Chip in a little extra money and you sit at #25.

No but you can't do that. 3 million and then a little extra money doesn't work anymore. It's 3m for the whole season.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
