Wolves get in on Andy to OKC

Post#1 » by [RCG] » Tue Dec 4, 2012 2:49 am

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=d8xv4s9

CLE out: Varejao
CLE in: Jones III, Williams, Ridnour, Collison, Wolves 1st

Varejao has been playing out of his mind this season, allowing the Cavs to strike while the iron is hot and add to their core for the future. Ridnour is also a serviceable starter while Irving is out. Cavs also add a first and have a potential-laden, inexpensive young core.

Irving/Ridnour
Waiters/Gibson
Williams/Jones III/Casspi
Thompson/Leuer/Williams
Zeller/Collison

OKC out: Lamb, Jones III, Collison, Maynor
OKC in: Varejao

Oklahoma City nabs the high-energy/high-motor Varejao who gives them an inside presence.

Westbrook/Jackson
Sefolosha/Martin
Durant/Sefolosha
Ibaka/Varejao
Varejao/Perkins

MN out: Williams, Ridnour, Wolves 1st
MN in: Lamb, Maynor

Wolves trade some spare parts with value for Lamb's potential.

Rubio/Barea/Maynor
Lamb/Shved/Lee
Kirilenko/(Budinger)/Howard/Cunningham
Love/Kirilenko/Cunningham
Pekovic/Stiemsma

Thoughts?

I'd do it without the 1st. Maynor is worse than Luke and though I like Lamb and would absolutely trade Williams for him straight up, I wouldn't say he should have more value.

Is that really enough for Cle to trade Varejao?

3 legit prospects for Varejao? If I'm Cleveland I can't resist.

But if I'm OKC I can. They just placed a large bet on Lamb. They're not going to cash it in on a soon to be very expensive Varejao.

I get that, but appears to have been a long-term $-saving move as well and if Varejao isn't absurdly paid for his performance this year or for the recent contracts of Jordan & McGee. Jeremy Lamb has also played only 34 minutes total this season, I'd think a little more would be in order if he were a "large bet."

Really? Varejao is set to get 10 per yr at very minimum in this market, and you really think a 19 year old not getting minutes for a contender a month into the season determines the organizations faith in him?

Varejao is locked this season as well as the next two.

And I don't get the "he's not playing because he's on a contender." Playing Lamb isn't going to torpedo OKCs playoff chances. And if you plan to use him during the playoffs you might as well start in the beginning of the season. Unless you expect to get better sitting on the bench for a year then magically improve during the offseason. Plus the Spurs are a contender and they have played Nando de Colo for 135 minutes. Sullinger has seen 300+ minutes, Contenders still play rookies, especially ones you'd think could help a team like Lamb.

I'm not saying they don't have any faith in him, it's just odd that they haven't really even kicked the tires much.

You're right about Varejao. He's set to earn about 9m for the next 3, and he's worth that much.

De Colo is a rookie in name only. He's a veteran of professional basketball. Sullinger is playing for a team I could hardly call a contender, and it shows in how terrible his defense is.

Lamb is being brought along slowly, because he's 19, not yet skilled enough to earn minutes, with bigtime potential. Contenders still play rookies, but the fact they've only played him 34 minutes in all of 18 games means very little about what they think of him. It only says how much Brooks trusts him thus far. The coach still gets to choose who plays and how much.

But I think him being a centerpiece in the trade for James Harden, a max player and a player OKC valued at 54 million, does say something. He wasn't a throw-in, he was one of 3 main pieces. I don't think they're going to flip him for veteran help. Particularly when OKC doesn't look like they're in need of it right now. .

OKC's shown they're willing to roll the dice-- but this isn't the right direction. They've had a pattern of picking up young guys and molding them. Harden, Westbrook, Ibaka, Durant, Maynor, Thabo, Perry Jones, Lamb, acquiring a lotto pick, all of that points to the way THEY think they can build a team. They didn't like what Green (hadnt) developed into, so they dumped him for need. I think they regret that decision now and wish they hadn't moved him for such an expensive veteran. Varejao looks great now, but OKC has a very thin financial ledge to walk on now. They lost Harden because of it, and I'm not sure they're looking to add ANY veteran contract.

People do the same thing with 21 year old Derrick Williams

Williams got minutes on a much worse team, flopped, then had an offseason, came back, flopped. He's earning meager minutes when there are clearly minutes there for the taking. His coach has expressed sincere doubts about him. The FO has reportedly offered him in trade for Batum. It definitely speaks to the organizations faith in him. Though it doesnt preclude him becoming good anyway.

OKC probably won't want to pay 30m to keep a big rotation of Perkins/Ibaka/AV.
No reason to when Durant can play 10mins at PF.

Not sure if there's something I'm missing, but this is what the owner had to say two months ago...

http://www.minnpost.com/sports/2012/10/timberwolves-candid-glen-taylor-offers-glimpse-inside-front-office

It never ended up being that we offered [second-year forward Derrick] Williams. I said to David [Kahn], ‘We’re not going to offer Williams,’ so I know David never did it.
