MIN - LAL - TOR (a different spanierd)

Post#1 » by shrink » Fri Dec 7, 2012 1:51 pm

I thought I'd pull this out:

shrink wrote:LAL GIVES: Gasol
LAL GETS: Bargnani + Barea

TOR GIVES: Bargnani + Calderon
TOR GETS: Gasol + Ridnour

MIN GIVES: Barea + Ridnour
MIN GETS: Calderon

WHY FOR LAL? A straight up deal for Bargnani and Calderon can be done today. Bargnani is probably a better fit under D'Antonio, but Calderon is very expensive - especially if you have to pay lux tax on top of it. By changing Calderon's $11 mil for Barea's $4.5, the Lakers save $13 mil - improtant when they have other, worse PG's on the team like Steve Blake and Chris Duhon. Barea would also fit D'Antoni's system, and give LAL confidence to keep Nash rested for the play-offs.

WHY FOR TOR? I don't know why they'd want Gasol, but the price tag is a closer fit. Calderon is a good player, but he can't come close to meeting his $10.5 mil contract as a second stringer. However, if they move Calderon, they don't have a legitimate #2 PG. Ridnour is the right skill level, and the right price.

WHY FOR MIN? MIN gets a small upgrade at PG, and a player that can play in a similar style to Rubio for team consistency. He may make for a good mentor as a fellow Spanierd who - best of all, disappears after this season. Taylor overpays a bit for Calderon this year, but gains cap space in 2013-14 for Pek or even a shot at other free agents. PG - particularly back-up PG - is becoming a crowded NBA market .. we can probably get ONE just as good a back-up PG on a decent contract -- maybe Calderon re-signs.

That's not a bad idea, if Rubio is ready to play, and he likes Calderon.

i cant imagine the Lakers having any interest in that - a big man that doesn't rebound or play defense; he's a one-dimensional shooter, except he's shooting terribly. So a zero-dimensional big man making over 10 mil. And Barea isn't swinging the trade either.

Toronto makes out pretty well.

Definitely not as bad for them as it would be for the Wolves, since Bargs is already stupidly overpaid for not being very good, so they're upgrading more to Pau for less of an increase in money, even with his diminished play. It's still expensive for them though; adding what, 10-15 million onto next season's budget for a declining big.

I don't think the Lakers would go for it. They'd be better off keeping Pau.

I like mine better.

LAL GIVES: Gasol
LAL GETS: Bargnani + Ridnour + Roy + Kleiza

TOR GIVES: Bargnani + Calderon + Kleiza
TOR GETS: Gasol

MIN GIVES: Ridnour + Roy
MIN GETS: Calderon

I would not dump both JJ and Ridnour for expiring contracts, dumping Ridnour IMO is questionable, but I wouldn't flip-out about it.

I've liked that idea for awhile. We only need one legit back-up PGs and this opens up $ for the offseason.

This is interesting, and I'm going to give it some thought. It's better for MIN - FAR better for TOR - and worse for LAL. Right now I've been acting under the assumption of the overpaid Gasol for the overpaid package of Bargnani and Calderon was about fair, but I don't know that that's true. I'm going to play with this one, because it's ripe for atrade - and its possible an even better one can be found.

I try to find trades by moving players to locations where they would have more value, and if TOR moves Calderon (which they should), they could really use a back-up PG. If TOR gets a replacement back-up PG, and also gets to move Kleiza's bad deal, they may be willing to toss us some incentive for our other PG.

Finally, LAL is in the worst shape right now. They have Nash, and could love to have a legitimate back-up PG behind him to limit his minutes. Unfortunately, they have two poor ones in Blake (inj) and Duhon (just poor) -- AND they have to pay lux tax on them! They should be VERY willing to provide incentive if a team can help them with this problem -- Calderon has the talent, but his huge salary makes things worse for them.

Lakers dumping Dohon to Toronto and/or incentive (Ed Davis) to another is an easy add to the deal or slight variation. I just think beggars can't be choosers and the Lakers are not in a position to be choosers, if they are getting Bargs in the deal.

If I'm LAL, I would simply trade straight up with Toronto. Gasol for Calderon, Amir Johnson, and T. Ross.

Calderon could immediately help backup Nash and even Kobe for spot minutes. T. Ross is young, athletic, could develop into a good SG, and i'm sure would love Mike D's run and gun system. Amir is a cheaper, younger, more athletic PF who's been playing well and would work with Mike D's offense.

The Raptors would then have a solid Frontcourt with Bargnani coming off the bench.

I don't think LAL make a deal without a starting PF and it duplicates PG, with Nash, otherwise it is fair value for the Lakers, maybe even better than fair as it provides a ton of savings, for Toronto I might be a bit on the fence, I don't know that I wouldn't prefer sending out Bargs more than Calderon as their cap situation gets jumbled.

I agree. and I'm not sure TOR would offer that anyway.

Also, I agree that Calderon helps, but he's $11.6 mil after his trade exception. Ridnour is worse, but since he's on a $4 mil contract, he saves them $7.6 mil -- doubled for lux is $15.2 mil. I realize the Lakers love production and worry about money less than any team, but Calderon is not $15.2 mil better than Ridnour - even to them.

If Bargnani + Calderon = Gasol, (and I don't know this is true) .. I think the simplest way to improve this trade is to simply send Steve Blake to TOR.

MIN has two back-up PG's for the season, but Calderon disappears after this year. The production of Calderon should be an upgrade over Ridnour - probably worth the extra $2.4 mil for the season. It also clears $4 mil in salary for 2013.

TOR gets the Bargnani-Calderon for Gasol swap. They swap Kleiza's deal for Steve Blake, who can replace Calderon as a more affordable back-up 2 to Kyle Lowry when he's healthy.

LAL gets the Gasol for Bargnani swap, and I do believe that Bargnani may be more valuable in D'Antoni's open offensive style, even with the lack of defense. Now if you're LA, would you rather have Calderon and Blake on your teams for $15.5, or Ridnour + Kleiza + Roy for $13.7? I say the latter. Ridnour + Kleiza's production >= to Calderon in a back-up role and Blake never getting in. It also saves them $5.6 mil to boot.

With no Blake, it puts more of the cost on LA - $8 mil more for a player that won't get off the bench. however, I'm not sure that isn't fair, considering Gasol's value.

If the Lakers trade Gasol for Bargnani Stern might have to veto it for Bargnani's safety. We might actually see a homicide on the court if Kobe has to play a few games with him.

Everyone wins in that situation. Bargnani is taken care of, and we've already learned that Kolorado Kobe cannot be convicted of felonies he commits, so he's good.

This is an absolute terrible trade for the Lakers. There is no way we would ever ever do this. Ever.
