Unsurprisingly, we went 7-50 in those 57 games.

On the bright side, it means Saunders was 36-44 when allowing under 120 points!

If you exclude when he sucked, he was just about average. Hooray!

For what it is worth, I still kinda think Ryan Saunders fell into a rough situation (even if he didn't deserve the role), we lost so many games because of KAT's injuries (and D'Angelo Russell's injuries.... and Covington injuries.... and a million other injuries). Just a garbage tier roster without Towns, we were bound to be horrible.

I have mixed feelings about your take. I do see your point and I want to acknowledge that Ryan did have a bad hand dealt to him most of his time as HC. But, at the same time, there are just too many objective metrics that point to Ryan being terrible at his job. The guys were never motivated or held accountable, Finch was able to improve efficiency in most if not all players, the number of close games Ryan lost without even a hint of end of game set play. Ryan was a buddy to the guys not a leader for them. Honestly he should have paid his dues and backed off after his first season ended. Not letting Rosas have the coach he wanted was a huge mistake that doomed him and the organization.

as Domejandro pointed out a coach with Ryan's credentials was maybe deserving of a promotion to a lead assistant. He simply did not have the resume of a head coach.

I think it was more than that. He got the job through connections of his dead father. That puts a stink on him from day one that his hard to wash off. The question of does he deserve to be a head coach is magnified. The players, the other coaches, the fans, everyone knows he didn’t deserve the job. Yup….it’s well documented that Ryan is/was close friends with players under his charge. That rarely ends well.

I dont see us breaking more than 35 as well and that means nothing goes wrong.

KAT and DLO are mature enough now and if they cant guide a team to get to the playoffs this year then that pairing aint taking us anywhere and we should gear to build around ANT/Jaden.

The more i think of it i just cant see the light flicking on for the two of them.. i'm happy to eat these comments and be proven wrong but watching KAT sook up at the refs in a pre-season game leads me to believe that he hasn't changed.

I want to preface this by making clear this is a genuine question. Why do you think so little of the Wolves assuming best case health scenarios? Ant, Beasley, and MCD are all in theory solid players who give different and badly needed support to KAT and Dlo. We have six guys known for their defense three of which are new. We have Naz who is dominating at the rim and Nowell who is showing he can do a little bit of everything. Most importantly we have a coach known for player efficiency. 35 wins is only 12 more than last season when we started with Ryan Saunders, had KAT miss 22, Dlo miss something like 30, Beasley miss something like 35. My point is you either think the rest of the league got much better or we aren’t that much better with all of these improvements and the benefit of an extra year for our young talent. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

This forum overstimate a lot players like Naz, MCD or Beasley and the best case scenario rarely is the real one.

At this point, we can wait and see, the season stars soon.

Rosas had every opportunity to hire his own coach. He opted for Saunders because he had support from the players. Was Finch available at the time? IDK. Not a coach in the NBA coulda won with a young team with best players injured- let alone none of them have leadership pedigree. What about this defensive genius Vanterpool? Why don’t you rag on him for a while for +120/game instead of trying to belittle the down and out young coach and his “***” father? Classless.

It's a fact that Ryan did not have the usual credentials needed to get a HC job in the NBA. He's probably a good person, but he's definitely not a good HC. His fathers early passing was tragic. That has nothing to do with us discussing Ryan as a head coach.

Finch was available and was interviewed in 2019. Rosas tried to hire Finch and was overruled by Taylor. Ryan was elevated over Vanterpool who was more qualified probably because Finch was Rosas guy and giving the job to Vanterpool would make it harder to hire Finch. That is the same reason that when Ryan was fired Finch was hired ASAP. Glen Taylor liked Ryan and was friends with Flip and it was that personal connection that elevated Ryan way beyond his experience and ability level. Ryan Saunders poor coaching was evident in our slow starting every game. It was evident at the end of the game in close games when we were disorganized in ways that are very uncommon. It was evident by poor rotations and substitutions that often benched or neglected the hot hand.

As for my point about his father, people don’t like nepotism. When an unqualified and frankly unskilled kid jumps the line without paying his dues it raises questions. Glen Taylor has a history of putting personal relationships above the needs of the team. Ryan should never have let himself be made permanent head coach. He should have asked to return to assistant after the interim season ended and waited until he was ready. Instead he used his connections and last name to get the owner to overrule the POBO and doomed himself.

With recent news the past month or so, it tells me the Saunders hire really was about control, like many speculated. Rosas obviously liked being in charge and throwing his weight around.

1. The bolded is FALSE
2. No one is arguing Saunders wasn’t ready but you keep trying to convince your case to who???
3. Vanterpool was a total flop and I can see why he was not elevated to HC

During the Finch hiring it came to light that Rosas wanted to hire him in 2019. The bolded is not false.

Saunders did not need to accept the job. He could have gone back to assistant coaching. Short term bad career move. Long term, smart as can be. Ryan made a choice you talk like he didn’t.

Vanterpool expected to be given the nod and left because he wasn’t. That tells me promises were made during his hiring. Either way, he certainly failed here.

Said by the person who presented what facts to back his position? Our dispute is over whether something did or did not happen. You are telling me I lack proof, yet you produce none. I remember it coming out after the unusual Finch hiring that Rosas wanted him during the initial search. It is consistent with their personal relationship, consistent with the short job search, and consistent with Glen Taylor protecting Ryan in the media even though he fired him shortly after expressing public support.

How are your positions anything but opinion?

Also since you want things you can read, a quick Google search found this ( I know it is opinion but I don’t want to waste a ton of time and it backs my position nicely.)

Your hole is getting deeper… using a narrative to support your narrative is classic. He was the boss and he made a choice - end of story.

Provide evidence to the contrary or admit you cannot. I spent less than a minute and found that article. What have you found?

I think it was more than that. He got the job through connections of his dead father. That puts a stink on him from day one that his hard to wash off. The question of does he deserve to be a head coach is magnified. The players, the other coaches, the fans, everyone knows he didn’t deserve the job. A coach is a leader and without respect you cannot lead. The players proved they didn’t respect him, night in and night out.

Classless.

The first paragraph to my knowledge is pretty much right on.

I don't agree as much about Ryan not being qualified for the job. He grew up talking his dad's playbook from an early age. He played 4 years of college ball and was a graduate assistant. He spent 7 years as an assistant with Washington. 3 things killed Ryan. 1, Injuries absolutely killed him. No coach in history could win with that g league team. 2. He coached in a collaborative way with the front office and was slow to change when it didn't work. Bad scheme for the personnal. 3. Too chummy with the players.

That said, he certainly turned out to be not a good coach. That's different from not being qualified. Many other qualified coaches in the Wolves past bit the dust too.

I'm know Glen wanted him to get a shot. The team wasn't going to be very good anyway. So he might as well be the one to go through the meat grinder. I'm not sure any really strong coach would have touched that job unless it was a first timer.

BTW, nobody in their right mind would turn down a big contract and a head coaching position if it were offered. Ryan turning down the extension and promotion that is.

On the bright side he won his first game as a pro HC. It was pretty much all down hill after that. Cheers.
