Lopez isn't renowned for his defensive play. He's solid for sure, but his offense is his bread and butter. All the scouting reports I've read on Aldrich call him an excellent defender. When I compare the games I've watched with Aldrich in college to the games I've watched of Lopez in college, Aldrich appears to be the better defender to me as well.
Lopez is bigger and a better athlete.
At the college level Aldrich seems to have a bigger impact on the defensive end - last night he was incredible, the only reason Kansas won the game in my mind.
At the same time, the two players were in extremely different situations. Aldrich gets to focus on his defense, and has teammates in front of him that can win their individual matchups. Lopez had to focus on being his team's #1 offensive option, and also had the benefit of his brother behind him as a weakside shot blocker.
I'll be interested to read what other folks think of Aldrich as an NBA player as we get closer to draft time. He's clearly going to be anything you could ever ask for in a college center, and has instincts in terms of physical play around the basket that can't be taught. He'll have a role in the NBA somewhere, without a doubt.
But how will he handle the increased athleticism of the NBA? Is he a star or a roleplayer?
