The fun part will be when/if Rubio is able to get his release from Joventut. Then we get to find out what he really thinks of Minnesota. Does he immediately sign with us, does he threaten to sign with another Euro team if we don't trade him or does he threaten to sit out the year and reenter the draft next year?

I'm hoping for the first option of course but it's really hard to tell at this point. I think he didn't love us to begin with but would have signed when he got his buyout taken care of if we hadn't draft Flynn. With Flynn on board, I'm not sure what Rubio will do when/if the buyout is resolved.

I really think the drafting of Rubio was a genius move. Best case scenario, he plays for the Wolves and you have the 2nd most promising rookie from this draft. Worst case scenario, he holds out, says he doesn't want to play in the cold, and you guys trade him for a top 5 pick next year or the year after. I don't think there is any pressure on you guys to move him now.

I think it is funny that people are killing you guys for taking him. You took a player that people are calling best passer since Steve Nash and Jason Kidd, he was clearly the 2nd best player overall, and you got him at the #5 pick in a WEAK draft. We have all been hearing about Ricky Rubio for years now, so I don't see his value dropping.

This is not big news, but just another step in the soap opera: http://www.sport.es/default.asp?idpubli ... _PK=808&h=

Real Madrid's GM says that Ricky Rubio is interesting for any team, but he thinks it would be disrespectful to talk about a player under contract. He says that there's no negotiation at this moment, but if the chance of adding Rubio arises, they would study it.

Meanwhile Joventut's president says that there's nothing (meaning the buyout) to negotiate with Rubio until he drops the lawsuit: http://www.as.com/baloncesto/articulo/l ... ibal_2/Tes

The latest report was that Real Madrid offered 3.5 million euros buyout to Joventut, plus Joventut can have Marko Tomas as well and Real will pay Tomas' entire salary. So Joventut would get 3.5 million euros plus Marko Tomas for a free salary cost in exchange for Real getting Rubio's rights.

Does anyone have any idea when this lawsuit is supposed to arise? It was filed, like what, 6 months ago? They must have one heavy docket in the Spanish court system. I'm just wondering when we can expect a change in the status quo.

Under this scenario would Ricky's buyout remain in tact so that Ricky would then have to negotiate a buyout with Real or play out his contract with them?

Contract buyouts are placed in the contract when the player signs it. Once he would be bought out he would get a new contract from Real (obviously for a lot more than he was making) and then it would be up to him and his agent to place a workable buyout in the new contract. I would assume the new contract would then have a $500,000 NBA buyout (best case scenario for Rubio) or more likely, no buyout. No buyout is more likely, meaning he would stay 2 years in Real because otherwise it doesn't make sense for them to get him for just one year. Especially when he's not even an established Euroleague player yet.

So I am sure Rubio and his agent would try to workout a 2 year deal with a $500,000 NBA buyout (which the Wolves could pay) after the first year, but I seriously doubt Real would do that. It would probably much more likely be a 2 year contract with no buyout.

talkbasket, you take quite a few shots at Rubio, and I'm going to assume it's safe to say you've seen him play a heck of a lot more than the rest of us, but if "he's not even an established Euroleague player yet", why would he have been on Spain's Olympic team and be on their National team this fall?

Obviously he has to be one of the better players in Spain. Not saying he's a superstar yet, but just the fact that he's representing the country, he's got to be somewhat established. Maybe common sense doesn't work in this situation?

He would be considered one of the top 2 point guards in Spanish League (the best point guard in the Spanish League has been Pablo Prigioni) and one of the top 10 players in Spanish League. That's a separate league from the Euroleague, which is a far higher level than the Spanish League is. You just have to ignore the endless Spanish homers that make up nonsense about the level of the Spanish League and how it compares to the Euroleague.

If you want you can look at his career stats in the 3 different leagues yourself:

http://www.nba.com/draft2009/prospects/189.html

That link will show you how established he is as a Euroleague player. Clearly he is established as a Spanish League (just teams from one country not the best teams from all of Europe like the Euroleague) and ULEB Cup (it's sort of like the Euroleague's D-League if you will) player and clearly not as a Euroleague player.

NBA fans don't seem to understand generally that the Spanish League is a completely different league from the Euroleague. The Spanish League is probably the best domestic league in Europe but it's far from the level of the Euroleague (as I said just ignore Spanish homers and their false claims to the contrary of that). The Euroleague is leaps above the Spanish League in level of competition. Proof of that would be that Spanish teams have only won 2 Euroleague championships in the last 16 years and 3 in the last 30 years.

And also the Spanish League isn't nearly, not even remotely as good compared to other European domestic leagues as Spanish homers and NBA fans say either. It's probably the best because of depth, but it's just a little bit better than say the Greek League. And then you have Spanish and NBA fans always swearing Spain is the best because it has "the most Euroleague teams" as some kind of proof.

Spain has 4 Euroleague teams, Italy has 4, Greece has 4, Adriatic League has 3 teams, France has 3 teams, Baltic League has 3 teams. So that's another big myth that Spain having 4 Euroleague teams is somehow special of unique when clearly it is not.

How would you compare the difference between NCCA and the NBA vs the difference between the Spanish League and the Euroleague?

Ok, that all makes sense, and most is what I believed already, but clearly the kid is good if at 18 he's already considered the second best PG in Spain, with the highest potential.

KSWN--

I'm trying to figure out how the Real buyout would work procedurally. For instance, once Real buys out Ricky what's to stop him from pulling a Carlos Boozer and signing with the Wolves? In other words, how is it that he is then forced to negotiate with Real? If he is forced to, it seems this would be unfair procedurally because then Real would have all the leverage. The only way this makes sense to me is if Rubio's contract is assigned to Real, in which case Real could enforce the current contract or agree to a modification. Thanks for any input on this...

Just imagine North Carolina, Michigan State, Villanova and UConn all played in the NBA.

Imagine also that two out of those NCAA teams also made it all the way to the conference finals in the NBA.

Then imagine that college players had a salary, and all your NCAA teams had a bigger budget than the 4-5 cheapest NBA teams.

Also imagine that the average attendance in the NCAA was higher than in the NBA.

That's how they would compare.

Rubio has only played two seasons in the Euroleague. He was 16 years old when he played first, and he was injured when he played his second, barely being able to shoot the ball at all or to dribble the ball with his good hand.

You're forgetting that they are reporting also a 1 million euro salary for Rubio. Where are the 17 million dollar that you reported first here?

Gone with the wind.

Of course, they reach an agreement with the player before paying the buyout. Indeed it's the player himself who pays the buyout, with the money he gets from the other team. So I guess it's all written on a contract in advance. And it happens all the time, especially in soccer (Real Madrid has just paid way over $100 million to buy Cristiano Ronaldo out of his contract with Manchester United).

Spanish League is much closer to Euroleague than NCAA is to NBA. Accurately it would be more like Spanish League is closer to Euroleague than the D-League is to the NBA.

Oh certainly. He's one of the best European players ever at his age.
