Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
Here is a funky trade suggestion…
DET: Gary Payton Jr.
OUT: Top-55 Protected Second
Why for Detroit? Get a gritty bench defender in exchange for their cap space.
GSW: Jimmy Butler
OUT: Andrew Wiggins, Gary Payton Jr., Kyle Anderson, and Kevon Looney
Why for Golden State? Get an All-Star caliber player in exchange for depth. Try to turn around a failing season.
MIA: Julius Randle, Andrew Wiggins, and Kevon Looney
OUT: Jimmy Butler and Duncan Robinson
Why for Miami? Get two starting-caliber players who were previously All-Stars. Breaks a malcontent into depth.
MIN: Duncan Robinson and Kyle Anderson
OUT: Julius Randle
Why for Minnesota? Bring back Chris Finch’s security blanket in Kyle Anderson, elevate Naz Reid as Minnesota’s starting Power-Forward, and get Anthony Edwards more spacing. Shave off ~$4.9 million in salary this season.
Donte DiVencenzo / Mike Conley / Rob Dillingham
Anthony Edwards / Nickeil Alexander-Walker / Terrence Shannon Jr.
Jaden McDaniels / Duncan Robinson / Josh Minott
Naz Reid / Kyle Anderson / Joe Ingles
Rudy Gobert / Luka Garza / Leonard Miller

Julius Randle
Power Forward
$33,073,920
FOR
(Spurs)
Keldon Johnson
Small Forward
$19,000,000
+ 2 yr, $35,000,000
Tre Jones
Point Guard
$9,104,167
Expiring Contract
Malaki Branham
Shooting Guard
$3,217,920
This was actually a bit of the inspiration for my post on Page 51 asking what is most important. I do think there's a chance they continue to move away from the "playing big" that defined the team last year. Trading for someone like Keldon would bring a more up-tempo identity with switching everything 1-4 (I think they already do this somewhat). I think this big of a contract though would make it harder to fit both Naz and NAW on the books though.

Spotrac says yes. But GSW is hard capped and the money difference is very hard to figure out.

I don't think so.
A team cannot reacquire a player it traded away during the same season (a season for this purpose being defined as starting on the first day of the regular season and ending on the last day of the Finals). If the player was traded between seasons (i.e., from the first day after the Finals to the last day prior to the start of the next regular season), it cannot reacquire the player prior to the end of the next season. If he is waived by his new team, then he cannot re-sign with his original team until the one-year anniversary of the trade, or until the July 1 following the end of his contract, whichever comes first6. However, if a team trades a player's draft rights, it can reacquire the player during the same season.

Sell me on Keldon Johnson, I don't know enough about him.
I don't like Tre Jones at all, and Branham seems like an OK flyer on a guy either coming into his own as a shooter or is playing over his head.

We didn’t really acquire him though. He was never on the roster so I don’t think this applies. He was a free agent and we traded his bird rights, nothing more.

Yeah, doesn't seem like it unfortunately.
I'm curious if the deal would work with Looney instead? I'd expect some draft compensation in that case (nothing major) but Looney seems like an ok guy to have behind Gobert to soak up the 15 minutes or so Rudy sits.

Puke, puke, and more puke. The only good player there is KJ and he can't shoot a lick (and neither can Tre). Randle is a better shooter than them.

All 3 trade machines say if you make the money work the Wolves can receive Kyle. They also say no on Moore so they do account for the rules.

Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
Here is a traded proposed by ESPN today:
Ball, Randle, White lead three-team swap
Minnesota Timberwolves get: guard Coby White (via CHI), forward John Collins (via UTAH)
Chicago Bulls get: forward Julius Randle (via MIN), guard Jordan Clarkson (via UTAH)
Utah Jazz get: forward Jaden McDaniels (via MIN), guard Lonzo Ball (via CHI), guard Chris Duarte (via CHI)
I would do this trade. We'd finally have our pg and Collins is a good 3pt shooter and offensive player who doesn't initiate offense.
Start: Coby, NAW, Ant, Collins, Rudy with
Bench: Conley, DDV, NAZ, Minott, Rob, TSJ
We could keep DDV starting vs NAW but I thought we could use more defense in the starting lineup.

Jaden is worth more than Collins, Randle is worth more than White, and I don’t feel we are getting enough value. I would need a couple of firsts to accept this. I would also probably swap those firsts for someone of value to balance this.

Pass.
I'm not a Coby fan, I like Collins mildly more than Randle and I'm not giving up McDaniels for that return.
And the Bulls laugh at the offer.

Agreed. I don't think I trade Jaden for any individual piece here.

In a heartbeat.
I absolutely love Timelord, but he's always going to be hurt.
But Avdija is good enough to render any minutes we get from Williams as a bonus.
But why does Portland do it?
They just gave up a lot for Deni, and at his age, should be part of the rebuild, not the teardown. And Williams only has 1 more year at 13M.

It only happens if someone wants Randle enough to pay for the pair, and I don’t see the Blazers moving on from Deni after overpaying for him.

I looked at this a couple weeks ago, and I’m pretty confident the trade machines are wrong here.
You’ll notice we have a traded player exception for the value of Kyle Anderson, which can only happen in a trade. We didn’t have the ability to trade him until we signed him as a free agent, which would have had to occur in the current NBA season.
July 3 - The Golden State Warriors will acquire forward Kyle Anderson from the Minnesota Timberwolves in a sign-and-trade agreement, ESPN reported Tuesday. The Warriors are giving Anderson a three-year, $27 million contract, per ESPN, and sending the Wolves cash and a future second-round pick swap.
Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
