The true winners of this trade

Minnesota, OKC, Denver, Memphis, LAC, LAL, the Suns, and basically everyone but Dallas.

LOL what.

They added a backup shooting guard who's a sniper who was the #2 option in GS. In DAL, he's option #4.

Their lineup is still the same.

They were paying Hardaway Jr the same amount. They upgraded from Hardaway to Klay.

They swapped Jones for Marshall. They are slightly better. Not sure what you are talking about.

Go back and read the GSW boards from last year during the terrible start. They started wishing for Thompson to be benched, (especially for end of games.) His defense is a liability, his offense is inconsistent, his own comments about wanting to start and being essential suggest his ego could be an issue, and he is getting old for the NBA at 34. Dallas paying 24 million a year for a guy I wouldn’t take on a minimum is a win from my perspective. Time will tell which of us is right.

Okay... He's not going to be the #2. He did well off the bench for GS. He should never have been the #2, but the Warriors had no other options. In DAL he'll be utilized better.

I think he's not really moving the needle but as a replacement for Hardaway he's pretty good.

24 Mill? It's 16.something.

Of course he'd want to start over the other scrubs GS had.

I'm assuming he's coming off the bench and not starting in place of Kyrie. He's not delusional.

He's not the same player he was. But he's still better than everyone not named Curry at the guard spot in GS.

Ray Allen was a defensive liability, he was a core piece of those Miami chips. Klay is in the same role IMO.

If we had him on the minimum, I'd walk NAW to the bench myself. He's one of the best shooters of all time. Without the pressure of being the #2 option he's gonna do super well, like he did for GS off the bench.

I don’t think picks Dallas over LAC to come off the bench. He is taking 8 million less to leave GSW. That means Dallas probably starts him at the 3 and goes small ball, (or whatever you call it with Luka being his size.)

Klay is not likely to improve with age. Tired legs equal missed shots, and depending on use I expect a drop off in his shooting. I could be wrong, but time will tell. Not to mention the added risk of injury the older you get.

NAW’s defense was vital last year, and Klay cannot shot create enough to make that swap.

End of the day we both have very different opinions of the same player and his fit with the Mavs. Time will tell who is right.

If he starts you're right it will be a horrendous mistake and the Mavs will likely be terrible.

I don't know that he will. I see him as a 20-23 minutes of the bench player for the season bumped up to 28 for the playoffs.

While I agree that last year Klay in GSW played bad, it was completely different context. DAL have two elite shot creators in their prime in Doncic and Kyrie. GSW was built around shooting gravity of Curry and Klay. I agree with you that Klay biggest problem was ego, I think if he at this stage he can accept a new role of 3rd scorer on limited shots (which his new 45/3 contract suggest) he will be fine

Would you take 8 million less per year and choose the team less likely in need of your shooting to come off the bench? The only way this makes sense is if they promised him a starting role.

The Mavs made the Finals, the clippers lost PG this summer and didn't make it close to out of the 1st round.

If I'm Klay having made the money he has, I'm taking the chance to add more rings rather than being booed out of LA.

That's just me. If his ego is truly that inflated, which outside of recent events has never seemed to be the case and I would argue is a bunch of BS, then yes you are right.

I think if that's not the case, the Mavs made a great signing.

The Mavs definitely need his shooting not sure what you are talking about.

This is not new, players have been doing this for a while, and I know I'm repeating myself he's playing the Ray Allen role on the Miami Heat.

Except they haven’t yet. They agreed to a deal with Klay that they can only execute by making a deal with GSW which they cannot agree on yet. In fact reporting suggests they are far apart. We don’t know the true cost of the deal yet.

You are talking about what he adds to Dallas, but you don’t know what Dallas has to give up. The equation is incomplete. My point is inputting the variable might change your understanding of the equation.

How so? You should go look at players with Klay's skill-set and what they are paid. 18 PPG on his incredible 3P Volume and relatively "low" on-ball usage is incredibly valuable.

At 30+ Million AAV he is a negative, but something like 15-20 Million AAV is right in line with his value as a player.

Right now it seems like two seconds and Josh Green (not so sure about this). They did just get Quentin Grimes who is pretty similar to Green albeit worse, but also with Thompson there would have been less need for him. It chalks up to rotations.

Grimes, Thompson, Marshall instead of Green, Hardaway, Jones Jr.

So we'll see, if they get another backup 3/4 they are better this off-season than the team we just played.

What I am reading that GSW wants a real return. This is not a we are helping him out move for them. That is why they are far apart.

GSW according to some reports doesn’t want to take any money back. At the same time, they want more than a 2nd. Maybe a first or at least pick swaps. Speculation on my part they may want further salary dump to 3rd or 4th team with Dallas paying the bill.
