bad shooter at pulling up/creator, and doesn't seem to realize it at times

Austin Rivers was drafted with the unprotected pick* the Wolves sent to the Clippers along with Sam Cassell in a contract year in exchange for Marko Jaric (it went to New Orleans in the Chris Paul trade).

Life finds a way.

I am not against the signing. I just don’t seem him as a pure PG and he has never been the shooter he was supposed to be as a prospect.

It will be interesting to see how Rivers and Nowell mins/playing time will shake out. Which one will be the primary ball handler to start the offense off the bench.

We needed another guard and he brings some veteran presence to the team which I like. Plus he is a coaches son which can help the locker room.

Rivers is very Blah...but that is why he is getting the minimum. I still think there were better options within our constraints, but it is what it is.

Rivers signing just makes so much sense. As a player he's not going to hurt you, can hit open shots on spot ups, move the ball, and is a decent POA defender. Then you look into it more, he was with Tim Connelly in Denver the last 2 years, and he was drafted by Dell Demps(who was an assistant with Utah last year), and Demps played with Rivers dad, Doc.

I am concerned that Rivers signing may block Nowell from PT (and to a lesser extent McLaughlin). I believe it is better long-term for the Wolves to have either or both of these players develop into playoff rotation caliber players for the Wolves especially given the lack of draft picks over the coming years. I am encouraged by this signing as quality depth if the young bench players are inconsistent or get injured and for the veteran presence. Time will tell.

He continued to play better and better throughout his career. I'm really surprised we got him so cheap.

I agree looking at his advanced stats I am surprised Connelly signed him. My guess is he a great locker room guy which I am ok. It's a long season and you need guys in the locker room that can help.

He's a career 35% from 3 which isn't stellar (not sure if he has hot spots in the corner or something) but not the type of guy you think about hitting big shots as a roll player.

He is a negative player both on offense and defense with a below average win share.

I can't say I have watch a ton of Rivers games but the ones I have watched he didn't wow me in anyway. Matter of a fact I thought he was a liability most of the time.

I just wish we would of used this money/roster spot on a true PG. I think PG and C are two position you want to have 3 quality players at. Right now we only have 2 PG IMO and wish JMac was our 3rd option.

Classic McHale: Including a pick in the deal where you're getting the lesser player.

I asked about him and Forbes in the Denver board. Only a few responses but they don’t seem to high on either.

Yeah I wouldn't expect much out of Forbes or Rivers. They're veteran, end of the bench guys who shouldn't be in a rotation, but if injuries happen they are capable to get a few minutes and not mess up.

I agree. Which is why I am fine with Forbes and pissed about Rivers. I view JMAC as a good 3rd string PG and a very below average if not out right bad 2nd string PG. He was basically unplayable for half the season. His offense is inconsistent at best, his defense is good in terms of attacking passing lanes and sneaking up for steals, but otherwise deficient. We needed a legit PG2 not an end of bench guy. Hopefully, JMAC and Rivers surprise me.

OK fine, they're on minimum deals. It's not like we paid them $40 million

A teams 10th man in the rotation is likely to be below average. 15 players per team 7 above average 7 below average and 1 average. What do you expect of a player on a minimum contract? To be above average? How about some perspective when you evaluate him.
