Re: Jimmy Butler Traded to Philadelphia (Discussion Continued)
I forgot they had dropped Patton's option earlier.
I wonder if the final two missed FTs were the straw that broke Thibs back. Butler was really forcing his way out by then.

Imagine a Covington block that starts a Rose fast break and ends in a lob to Towns.

Guys, we don't have to wonder if Jimmy will decide to play anymore.
That's sort of helpful.

Hmm, I would like to but I'm sort of seeing Towns behind Rose in the fast break. Make that Saric and Towns lagging behind. Yeah it's on Rose now. Hopefully Wiggins can start playing for real now.

These are my thoughts. I wanted to see what Patton could do when(if) healthy. I believe moving Jimmy will be addition by subtraction. I felt as though Butler stunted Wiggins growth as a closer, but with Okogie and Covington in the fold, you have the idea wing rotation around Wiggins. His next area to develop is as a distributor. He has to increase his assist total so teams don’t collapse the paint when he has the ball.
As far as Dario Saric goes, he’s the X-factor in this trade. I would like him to become a distributor ala Draymond Green. He has the ability to put the ball on the floor against most 4’s in this league and has a surprisingly pretty good post game. With this core, the ball has to move faster and we need to save the isolation basketball for the last 7 seconds of the shot clock.
I will only be disappointed in this trade if Patton becomes something special because we should have taken another look at him later in the season.

I understand where you're coming from, but:
1. There are no guarantees in the lottery and we could spend a decade in the lottery before a legit superstar is ready to run alongside KAT. This is just kicking the can down the road
2. Our performance to date has clearly been hampered due to the dysfunction Butler caused. Butler's net effect was negative this year. I am confident we'll be better moving forward.

This is most definitely an addition by subtraction move.
Hopefully we can find our Steve Kerr and rid ourselves of the “got us to the playoffs” Mark Jackson.

We should have done everything we could to also get Fultz in the deal. Its not like they can give him the money he wants and I doubt that they'll want to anyway

Hard to lose a star but this trade should improve the Wolves 3 point shooting, floor spacing, defense and rebounding. How much is the question but I like the fit

Re: Jimmy Butler Traded to Philadelphia (Discussion Continued)
Considering it’s about 15% into the season. Minnesota needed to make the move. 4 nba 1st rounders in nba means nothing if the team trading like Houston is expected to draft in the 20-28 range. Houston probably put draft protections in the 3 and 4th 1st round picks down the road knowing full well they could be a crappy team by than. Who knows. I just find it hard to believe any team would trade 4 1st rounders completely unprotected. It’s unheard of especially after the nets/Celtics trades. . And likely we will never know the details.
Saying that. Covington is a valuable 3 and D player who can literally guard 4 guards. He gets exposed on man to man defense but he’s usually gonna to guard the other teams best offensive non center player. What Covington really excels at is transition defense and help defense. He deflects a ton of balls. And has long arms. And this year Covington is finishing a lot at the rim which he didn’t do last year. He practice on this skill since teams are chasing him off the 3 point line. So it’s a wide open to the rim a lot if he gives a pump fake. His handles aren’t great but good enough.
Saric on the other hand. I’m not sold on long term if the 3 ball isn’t falling. He finally broke out of his season long slump the past 2 games. He just has no athletic ability. He’s 6 foot 10 but plays a lot smaller. He gets abused by other teams more athletic 4. The sixers coach so dumb letting Blake Griffith abuse saric. Finally got smart and put Ben Simmons on more athletic 4s.
Timerwolves had to make the trade. U are never gonna to get full value back for butler especially since he is essentially a free agent after this season

I don't like the trade at all... Saric is ok... But defense is suspect... 3 pt% was 31% his rookie year and 39% last year... Looks like a streaky shooter at best... As for Covington, he is the 3 and D guy Wolves need, but he is already 28 (only a year younger than Butler) and doesn't fit with the timeline of young guys with Wiggins, Towns and Okogie. The worse part is the 2nd round pick... ARE YOU KIDDING? Could've gotten at least a first round pick... Or made them add in Fultz considering Wolves gave up Patton as well...

I didn't want Fultz here. All he can do is push the ball and speed up the pace. I just don't trust his shooting head. But I also can see why someone would have wanted a bigger trade piece thrown in. Saric is pretty good tho.

Really? **** man, I'm thrilled we got LaVine, Markkanen and Dunn out of our deal!
Give me RoCo and Saric over those three seven days a week and twice on Sundays.
Really? Wow.
I'd take Markkanen over all of them easily, not even really close for me. He could be a Franchise changer.

Re: Jimmy Butler Traded to Philadelphia (Discussion Continued)
This trade is junk no matter how you look at it. A 27 y/o defensive guy who will be on the decline when we would "maybe" have a chance at competing. A PF who is a role player and is not great defensively, who we need to pay in two years. And a second round pick two years out.
At best we are awful, but then it proves the trade had little upside, at worst it sticks us somewhere in the middle just outside the playoffs with little hope for improvement.
Now, there can be more deals, but it doesn't seem likely they will have the future in mind, they will just be moves to solidify our mediocrity. Basically the opposite of what we need to do.
I have no hope for this team.

Re: Jimmy Butler Traded to Philadelphia (Discussion Continued)
Seems to me like Thibs and crew were asking for a lot more all this time. I'm not entirely sure this was the best they could do. Or if Butler was just making so much of a mess by staying that they just threw up their hands and washed themselves clean of him.
In the end a West team didn't get him, so that's good. Although he could leave Philly this summer. In which case we would feel like we robbed them for a rental. That is until Patton explodes onto the league. Probably no matter what happens we will be discussing this for as long as we have the Lavine/Dunn/Markkenen for Butler/Patton deal. The next two solid years no doubt. Hopefully the team gives us something better to talk about.
