I think I've come to the opposite conclusion. I don't want to trade for vets &/or say a significant 4th piece. I want to go the Memphis route (last offseason). Let's identify a rookie that we really like say in that 8 to 12 range (for me that's TyTy Washington)...let's jump up to get him with extra picks & say downgrading from Beas (similar to Jonas to Adams). I'd rather long play this...as I'm confident we shouldn't be panicked about KAT asking out. So say a Beasley for Buddy plus pick swap...that makes a ton of sense? Obviously have to wait until order gets 100% sorted out, but I believe this could be a profitable strategy for us.

Thoughts?

According to this https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2021/08/nba-minimum-salaries-for-2021-22.html his min salary will be around 2 mil per year. I would offer Josh a deal similar to McLaughlin 3 year / $6,480,000, last year team option.

Although I love Okogie motor and heart, I would like to find someone who is less on dimensional. For instance, someone who can pass a bit, or shoot, or dribble, or finish at rim. Or maybe with grow of chemistry between our core players and young players such as MCD, Nowell, Reid we will see more ball movement and Okogie will be able to fit more.
I think your right in the ballpark of his value....didn't Kris Dunn's next deal after his rookie deal end up being about 5 mil per? So that's low & high end? He's got a role as a defensive specialist & he's great from a team chemistry guy....so I really feel it's three things that factor in his wolves future...1) He still good with that type of role, 2) How much do we trust Bolmaro with assuming his role & offering maybe some more playmaking, & 3) Does he ultimately just get replaced by a rookie & a rookie contract?

I think these are two related topics. Let me explain. Lets review our rotation from financial, current production and potential point.

Bigs:
Towns
Reid
Knight

Note: we have all star level big and no depth behind him and no room (in terms of playing time and money) to find a solid backup C. The problem is that every team in NBA needs a cheap, defensive minded backup C. Tough situation here because we could use a players like Byiombo stop bleeding in defense when our offense is struggling.

Wings:
Vando, MCD, Prince, Edwards, Beasley, Okogie, Layman

Note: here we have very high potential because of MCD, Edwards and Vando. But still we lacks size and actual production on the floor because of inconsistence. Luckily we have expiring Prince, Okogie, Layman contracts, tradebale Beasley contract. So we have room here in terms of playing time and money for MLE deal.

Ballhandlers:
DLo, Beverley, JMac, Bolmaro, Nowell, Wright

Note: here we have good mix of youth/potential (Nowell, Bolmaro), veteran presence (Beverley) and elite shooting and passing (DLo). After Beverley extension there is no room (in terms of playing time and money) to find a solid backup PoA defender.

So my scenario would be.

0) trade

MIN IN: Oubre, PJ Washington
MIN OUT: Beasley, Nowell, three 2022 SRPs

CHA IN: Holmes, MIN 2022 SRP (via WAS)
CHA OUT: Oubre, PJ Washington, heavily protected 2023 FRP

SAC IN: Beasley, Nowell, two late 2022 SRPs, heavily protected 2023 FRP (via CHA)
SAC OUT: Holmes

Why for MIN: upgrade at PF/SF
Why for CHA: get starting С who run and and jump and play aggressive defense
Why for SAC: get assets for backup С (after Sabonis trade), get some shooting (after Haliburton and Hield trade)

1) Convince Covington to sign here for slightly less then full MLE 36/4. Two last years are partially guaranteed based on health. Improve depth on wings, provide MCD and Vando with mentorship, gamble on our defensive identity by adding a proven veteran who knows how to play defense

2) Negotiate new contract with Reid. If we can sign him to team friendly contract it means that our bench will continue to be built around him as offensive minded big

3) based on previous point we need to add low profile low cost defensive minded players to compliment our core player. Okogie for min does not sound too sexy, but it is a workaround, he is 14th in rotation.

4) convert Knight deal to Hinkie special deals, he is 15th in rotation.

5) negotiate Washington new deal. I'd offer him JaMychal Green's money (17/2), but for more years 25 mil for 3 years

Towns/Reid/Knight
Vando/RoCo/PJ Washington
Edwards/MCD/RoCo
Beverley/Oubre/Okogie
DLo/Bolmaro/JMac

RoCo-MCD-Oubre-Bolmaro combo is very interesting unit, they can swtich, play aggressive defense.

I was just curious why you think a PoA defender is a priority? As an eventual replacement for Beverley?

We currently use Bev, Jaden, and even Vando some. Okogie can’t get off the bench in an 11-man rotation, and he’s very good at it!

Hypothetically, I would prefer Okogie to Dunn because he’s longer and we don’t need to use any of our MLE to bring him back.

Well I hate this draft, especially after the top(Mainly Chet), and even more from 15-30.

The benefit of having guys like Ant, Jaden, and Vando on such team friendly deals is to go out and spend that money to help yourself win. It is winning time, not developing rookies time or being hyped for summer league time. We don’t even have time for Bolmaro. It’s the formula the Warriors used, it’s the formula every young team uses once they show they can be competitive. If we can use Beasley our picks, Bolmaro, and cap space to find a winning player, we do it.

offseason trade with knicks: Yes or No? Dlo and kemba pretty much on the same level. Similar inefficient chuckers but atleast kemba can get to and finish at the rim with consistency.

Knicks In: D'lo, Beasley, McDaniels, Reid
Out: Kemba Walker, RJ Barrett, Mitchell Robinson

Timberwolves Out: Dlo, Beasley, McDaniels, Reid
In: Kemba, Barrett, Mitchell Robinson

Not the OP but I'll answer.

Long term, we do need a Beverley replacement. A combo-guard that can take pressure off DLo defensively, allowing him to do his quarterback thing, while also being able to space the floor and, ideally, play make a little.

Okogie can defend and his playmaking isn't bad for a wing, but he can't shoot so he's out. And guys like McDaniels and Vando are needed elsewhere.

And in the short term we need Beverley insurance. We've already seen him miss games and that's only going to get worse as he gets even older.

It's realistically one of 3 key aspects we have to address moving forward; size/rebounding, consistent 3pt shooting and Beverley insurance/replacement.

Yeah, thats exactly my though! Let me add my two cents.

I agree that we have these three major problems: size/rebounding, consistent 3pt shooting and PoA defense. Some of these problems are direct consequence of our defensive scheme. When we play high wall and cant containt PoA (for instance Trae Young) and lead opponent ballhandler can pass then we have 3 our players playing against 4 opponent players. It leads to few problems: first, with high probability we are destined to lose defensive rebounding battle. Playing Towns on perimeter doesnt help here because he is our best defensive rebounder. Having Reid as backup C doesnt help either. He is often undersized even against backup bigs. Second, this type of defense requires long, athletic wings who can cover a lot of ground, making right rotation, executing aggressive closeout. The only wings who have long term future in such defense are MCD, Vando, Edwards and Bolmaro. It hurts me inside when Beasley/Nowell/JMac are exposed as low men in rotations and get killed. Third, we cant add players with low basketball IQ, because slowly we MUST implement multiple defensive schemes at least "high wall", "high drop", "switching" and zone defense. Because all of these schemes benefit Towns as mobile big. Low IQ defensive minded players even with high effort level will be exposed, because they cant be played in offense. It hurts me when I see Okogie lost in offense. I was sceptical about Vando, but Vando looks a lot better lately (mostly because of DLo elite passing).

So saying this I would put backup PoA defender as highest priority, because currently it is backbone of our defensive scheme and unfortunately we are not able to play another, because it would expose Towns as rim protector. To put it simple if you have someone like Towns, Jokic it is better to play "high wall" if you have Embiid (and Thybulle) it is better to play drop. Then I would add a big wing. Even in expense of 3pt shooting of Beasley. I think many of our recent defensive struggles can be attributed to Vando and Edwards injuries, two our wings responsible for defensive rotations.

I dont believe that we will find a decent defensive minded backup C. It would be great, but I dont hold my breath. Maybe we should overpay Byombo?

I have been advocating for Derrick White trade. While I do think that we are kind of set with DLo and Beverley, I still wonder what kind of team we could be if we replaced Russell with White? I am watching BOS who built their defensive identity with Smart being main perimter defender and now they added White who fits like a glove.

In our case White would be a perfect addition: he can roam in defense like Russell does. He can defend PoA when Beverley is not playing. He can hit shots, he can slash. Yes, we would miss Russell clutch shooting, yes we would miss Russell elite passing, but at 70 mil for 4 yrs, White could have been an interesting option.

Towns/Reid/Knight
Vando/???
Edwards/MCD/???
Beverley/Beasley/Okogie
White /Bolmaro/JMac

Yeah, I get this is the route not to take if you can't identify a rook worth it.....& maybe that's truly where you're at? But we did pretty damn well in the last 'so-called ' bad draft. Minus Culver (who was obviously our 2nd choice)...this group has done a pretty good job of evaluating the draft.

And all teams go your route...yeah, it's say a more traditional way, but Memphis clearly didn't go that way, stayed patient, & trusted their development team....& now their in a crazy good spot (because they got both)....but even, if their young guys jump puts them more in our stratosphere 5/6 range...they're still in an incredible spot go forward. I think the more traditional route is pushing your chips all in too soon?

Lastly, specific to the guy I'd target in TyTy (& I'm more bought into the theory)...but how many KY PG's need to come into a draft with so-so scouting reports & fall to late lottery or so & then blow up in league (SGA, Maxey, etc)...been a long time that they've kicked out a Brandon Knight? And if we knocked that pick out into a significant eventual core piece....now making your more traditional vet trade.. can be potentially even bigger?

You bring up a couple of things here that I definitely like &/or have considered in the past...

Help Char find their big....I wanted to find a 3-teamer where we could gain PJ for awhile....would love a Vando/PJ rotation at the 4. Also, my new thought there....would Plumlee be our answer for our 3rd big (mix & match with Naz as backup)...longer guy...better defense & rebounding than Naz....& with his Denver experience...a big that can play that high wall coverage?

Sac after trade deadline moves & my belief that they still won't completely tear it down....a team where Beasley could make sense...

Last, Roco or Prince....wouldn't want both of them but which one makes the most sense...Roco probably better player still but is he significantly better that it's worth him alone....because TP is him + another mid level guy?

We have several tools to improve our roster

1) MLE
2) trades
3) one FRPs, three SRPs

One problem of our current frontcourt is that all three bigs Towns, Reid and Knight are replicate some prototype. They all are finesse, skilled, offensive minded bigs. Yes, Knight is more aggressive rebounder than Reid, but the main point is that they do not have superior level of physical tools to compensate some defensive weaknesses. Hence they MUST be 100% sharp in all rotations. Unfortunately, it is not the case. All three are slow decisions makers in defense. So finding a big bodied C might be a good puzzle, because no decent backup C would come here from FA to play behind Towns. So we won't spend MLE to bring backup C. Also I don't see us spending FRP here. The most realistic in my opinion is spending one of SRPs. I like Day'Ron Sharpe who is a bruiser selected in second round and who has been already impacted game.

With regard to RoCo vs Prince debate. I am 100% for bringing here RoCo and not bringing here Prince. RoCo is like big brother for Towns. RoCo is a pure glue guy, he plays on both sides of the floor. We need him, he also is a veteran, who can sacrifice his minutes, touches when our young players continue to grow. Also I don't see a better candidate for MLE, a tool that MIN historically for years can't use. Bring him here, create some depth at SF/PF. Let us reinforce our defensive identity by bringing another versatile defender who knows how to play in such aggressive scheme, because when Vando can't give 100% effort we are doomed. So this is the best opportunity to spend our MLE, however I can see drafting another big wing here with our FRP.

I also hope that our three SRP might bring here another solid PoA defender. Because these picks are often used as sweetener in trades, S&Ts.

u guys think we got fleeced by warriors? Wiggins became an allstar..they got talented big in Kuminga with our #7 pick. And Warriors will contend for championship. While we hover around .500 with Dlo. I think with a better offensive minded coach dlo would be shooting the ball better. Here he's become the 3rd option behind towns and edwards. When he's not running the PnR he's just standing around in the corner. But ultimately he needs to get better at catch and shoot i guess. Cuz it's obvious towns and edwards r better than him. Maybe finch can design some post up plays for him..and more elevator screens and have him cut more. Some games he's just launching 3s. That's not gonna help his overall fg%. Maybe one day dlo can prove he's worth Wiggins and Kuminga. Any chance we can upset Warriors in 1st rd? We would need bklyn allstar version dlo to show up though.

u guys think we got fleeced by warriors?

We know how we did with Wiggins. We know how we are doing with DLo.

Why should we care what some random Stephew on twitter thinks?

Man, here there are people with serious exgirlfriend síndrome. Once she is not with me I don't care about her, and she isn't with us, she was a very bad gf

This is probably borderline insulting, but here goes

Edwards for #5 + Brogdon?

It’s not borderline, it’s just insulting.

I wouldn’t trade Ant for the 1st pick this year, let alone the 5th. You don’t give up on the somewhat proven young talent for a chance to find the exact same thing.

That would be a great analogy if anyone cared for Wiggins while he was here.

Yea, first this isn’t a serious offer, not trying to be rude, but if you even have to preface this as borderline insulting, just know it actually is. This would be the cheapest a star was ever acquired. Ant isn’t someone you trade.
