This is 100% accurate.

Only teams under the cap can renegotiate a contract, and the salary in the then-current season can be increased only to the extent that the team has room under the cap (and cannot increase the player's salary beyond the maximum salary). - CBA FAQ #59

He wanted his deal renegotiated to a max contract. For a player with 7 years of NBA experience like Jimmy Butler, that contract starts at $30,560,700. That means in order to legally offer that max extension, Minnesota would've needed $10,114,921 in cap space to bump him up from his current negotiated salary to the maximum. And that doesn't just mean get rid of Gibson's $14 million and that's it....it means Minnesota would need to be at $91,754,079 in team salaries on the books just to get the max extension done. With Minnesota's current cap situation, that would mean cutting $32,801,304 in salary to fit him in. Take away all of the free agent and rookie deals signed this summer, we're still at $109,080,549 for 8 players. Almost $18 million still to clear just to get the Butler extension on the books, not to mention you still have to fill out half of the roster.

Nice post Klomp. The next question people would want to know is, could MIN possibly get that cap space now?

We would need to $55 mil from MIN’s books, but we get a head start by removing Jimmy’s $19. MIN’s big contracts, in the order they would most likely be dealt, are Dieng $15, Teague $19, Taj $14, Wiggins $25. However, only one team has cap space (SAC), so we’d need to do multi-team deals, where MIN can slide down the difference in salary matching, like

Teague $19 to PHX for Chandler + Okobo ($14.8), and in the same deal trading Chandler + Okobo for Terrence Ross ($10.5), and Ross for Ajinca and Miller ($6.9)

That returns to MIN Teague for Ajinca, Miller and $12 mil in cap space.

However, the trading partners are limited. Only one team has actual cap space and only half the teams in the league are far enough under the lux to be willing to take on salary for a reasonable price - and many of those teams will only take on expirings because they have cap space plans next summer.

I don’t think Jimmy’s frustrations are justified here - he is asking for the impossible. Sure, he can be angry that Wiggins and Towns signed deals, but realistically, if he wanted a renegotiation this year, he needed to say so before last year’s free agency, before MIN used it’s cap space to sign Teague, Taj and Crawford. If he wants to get paid at MIN, or most likely anywhere, he’ll have to wait until this summer.

Thats Thibs plan, he will force Jimmy to play with these guys unless some team gives EQUAL value for Jimmy.

So Jimmy stays and we get 2nd seed

The concerns around KAT coming out of college was how long would his offensive game take to develop. Most people thought he’d be a defensive big man with a well rounded offensive game. People that called KAT soft when we drafted him are FOS

One more practice like that and Wiggins might ask his brother to respond for him online

I don't think that's fair to say from a fan's perspective, since we don't actually interact with these players personally. However, it is completely fair to criticize the people who are in charge, as they're the ones who are supposed to know their players personality types and how to put them in the best position to succeed.

So, if we don't interact with them, how do we know that Wiggins or Towns are what Butler says they are? If people are going to have opinions they should seek information and learn before they voice them.

I'm sorry but no amount of articles will tell you how a person really is unless you know them personally. Yes, they may have a general temperament you can tell from the outside. But to really understand how a person's character will influence on their game on a level that's even remotely valuable isn't privy to us fans.

That's dumb.
Just sit Jimmy out. He wasn't going to come in today anyhow. Yesterday was all for show.

Also, he wanted to be maxed out right? I thought he said all he cares about was winning?
He's worked hard, and should get paid, but if you say your honest JB, be honest. It's all about the money.

Jimmy didn't "reveal" anything. You said it yourself, it was a question mark when they came into the league.
Jimmy was just a b*tch about it, and cried to the media because he didn't get paid. That's Diva slash punk sh*t to me.

Butler and Thibs have wrecked this team with their negative energy. Butler was never Minnesota. Guys comparing him to KG is a joke. Despite KG being clearly out of line sometimes, he also showed a lot of love for those close to him. He was all about playing in Minny and wanted to build here long-term. Butler turned out to be a one year rental who bullied the young Towns and Wiggins into passive shells of the promise they previously showed. If Towns and Wiggins look disinterested maybe it's because they can't stand the bigmouths and their constant shouting. Butler then demands a trade because he couldn't give a crap about the franchise.

Get rid of the old Bulls. The Wolves should be their own thing now.

It's becoming a hazing/bullying session.

I think a hammer is coming down somewhere. My money is on this being ownership's call. The organization took a hit yesterday and I'm willing to bet Taylor and the powers that be are fed up, because Thibs has no control over this situation. WOW, what a MESS!

The Wolves are a POS franchise who did not make the playoffs for a decade and a half, this situation is an improvement :P

Big difference is KG never demanded a trade then got into fights with teammates. There is a huge gap between someone who showed clear loyalty to the team without needing to air it out to the public, and a guy putting on a show for ESPN to send a message to FO.
