I put some blame on Finch. He has had a hard time integrating bench guys even when those same bench guys had played decently on other teams. That's why I don't even care who we sign as a bench player as they are likely to underperform here. Yeah, we got some sticky players that don't pass to everyone, but Finch has to take leadership on that. I'm in the minority, but Finch's inability to get bench players going, not resting guys enough (which go hand in hand) and failure to adjust during games, makes me wish we had a better coach. Yeah, Finch is still one of the better coaches the Wolves have had, but I don't think he's a great coach (just a good one) and why I preferred Nick Nurse and Budenholzer, who both won titles.

Finch has been doing great job with bench players: Reid, Vando, Beasley, even Nowell before. Kyle Anderson, NAW. They all contributed as bench players. Yes, Finch sometimes outsmart himself with by running some weird combinations, but he is by far the best coach that is available right now.

P.S. It is funny because I saw multiple TOR fans saying that Nurse was riding same guys, even more than Thibs has been doing.

I think the players you mentioned played much better as starters than they did as bench players. Reid didn't break out until he was a starter, Beasley played well as starter then sucked on bench, Kyle started. Its easier for guys who play with starters to integrate into offense. I really hated the way Finch used Shake, Brown and Morris last year.

Well, Vando, Beasley, Reid and even McDaniels were bench players and developed into pseudo starters.

Shake and Brown have not shown anything in DET, Morris has been dealing with injuries. I wish Brown and Morris had more opportunities, but it was high stakes season, there was not much room for slow integration. However, NAW example shows us that Finch is good at using bench players who were lost case in other teams.

Vando and NAW were defensive players and so its easier to integrate. NAW played for Finch in New Orleans and he has worked extra hard to integrate NAW into offensive. Shake played well for Philly when he got minutes, Monte Morris played great for Denver when he got minutes. Troy Brown was good for Lakers when he got minutes. Finch didn't do a good job of integrating those three, plus he never got Forbes going even tho he was decent for both Spurs and Milwaukee. I'm not saying Finch is a bad coach, but he has plenty of shortcomings and I am not sure he's what this team needs to get to the next level. Plus, my other point is I'd rather focus on defensive orientated players to add to the bench (guys that don't need to score to be effective like a Vando or now, a Killan Hayes). SloMo is a good defender and I want him back. I want Morris back too but I want him to get some starts and get more integrated into offense. At the start of the year, I thought the Wolves had the best bench in the league and I was really disappointed that the bench wasn't a strength in the playoffs.

I think it's fair to say Finch has a long runway to trusting guys who are new, but I don't think that's a bad thing necessarily. If you are constantly tweaking your rotation based on glimpses and not on extended success, there will be no consistency in your lineups. Finch understands the importance of consistency because he coached in the D League where he rarely had it because of call-ups. Adding one player into a rotation out of the blue can throw off an entire lineup, especially when the offense is based on flow.

I dont get your concern about Shake and Brown, do they offer any skills that other MIN players dont have? Shake got plenty of opportunities here, he just is not good as backup PG, and we dont have another role for him. Brown's skillset was overshadowed by McDaniels and NAW. Morris did not play almost a year, and came here in deadline, was injured in playoff. Conley and NAW also had problems last year to integrate themselves, because they only had couple of full trainings, no preseason, no team camp. If Morris resigns, I expect him to be much better.

A good example is Garza, who really brought his scoring in couple of games.

Well then, I guess my point still stands.

Unless Klomp feels like elaborating?

Well that wasn't said in the original post. All I was going off of was "Finch doesn't play anyone that doesn't play defence".

So you ignored logical context. Neat.

That's incredibly frustrating to deal with though so please try to avoid it in the future. Cheers.

Honestly, Killian Hayes may have been the worst starter in the NBA and potentially a bad player... just ask Piston fans what they think of him. Don't forget that the Pistons are dreadful.

Who you rather have next season Kyle Anderson or Monte Morris?

It might come down to the price point difference between the two. I think all prices equal, I'd lean Anderson.

James Wiseman makes some sense. Back up Gobert, had some good games for Detroit. Potential is still there.

Piston fans don’t have anything nice to say about Wiseman either, and some posters have mentioned him here.
Tbh I’d prefer players like Kris Dunn,Talon Horton-Tucker, Lonnie Walker or Dennis Smith Jr for a guard and Jalen Smith, Moritz Wagner or Goga Bitadze for a big. If they come super cheap of course. Not sure if Smith will be available though, I think he has a player option.

I guess I'm looking for someone who is a legit, athletic 7' with some basketball ability.

I love Smith and Wagner as 4's or maybe small ball 5's. Goga to me is far too limited athletically.

Wiseman might be an idiot, then forget him. However, he also may have been humbled and if he even just becomes a Gobert-lite, it's a huge win. Hell he can just be a Gafford.

We need someone who can create and shoot 3s. Monte may have a chance to be that. We need Miller or Minott to step up to backup pfd.

We either make a big tradeon draft day or will have to bring both back due to cap restrictions

I saw a story that said Connelly is trying to renegotiate Gobert’s deal? That would be amazing.

Bobby Marks suggested its something we could do in his latest ESPN piece, but I'm not sure if anyone has said it was a consideration or not:

Does it make sense exploring a Rudy Gobert extension? The NBA Defensive Player of the Year has two years left, including a player option in the last year. Both sides could agree to eliminate the player option and then extend at a lower salary. This option helps Minnesota financially in 2025 and also gives Gobert financial security.

The thing I saw said Doogie was suggesting / reporting it. I’m flying or I’d be more organized. Maybe it was skor north?

Looks like it was Doogie talking to Marks, so I'm guessing it was in reference to his article.

Yes and here’s the summary:

https://www.yardbarker.com/nba/articles/amp/minnesota_timberwolves_rudy_gobert_extension_percolating/s1_17359_40481326

“The longtime local insider noted Thursday that both Gobert and the Timberwolves have mutual interest in getting a contract extension done, come July. Why, you ask? An extension would give Rudy some stability into his 34 or 35-year-old seasons and it would give Minnesota some salary relief now.“

That would be amazing.

Not surprising. I was posting that this was likely to happen during last off-season as it was the easiest way to help the Wolves with their salary issues and give Rudy security too. I'm still glad to see that both parties plan to move forward with an extension that will reduce the 2025-26 tax bite and lock in Rudy for the future

Can MIN finally attract some FA who wants to revive their careers? Reworking Gobert contract, resigning Monte Morris, Kyle Anderson, and getting Joe Harris for vetmin would be a great off-season.

Gobert/Reid/???
Towns/Anderson/Miller
McDaniels/Harris/Minott
Edwards/NAW/Moore + Clarke
Conley/Morris/???

Joe Harris is cooked, pass.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
