Quoting myself on Minnesota's asset situation, with a note on Phoenix's.
Spoiler:
That said, here are Minnesota’s pick assets…

2025 FRP (Detroit, 1-13 Protected)
2025 SRP (Utah)
2026 FRP Swap (worse between MIN/UTA)
2026 SRP (worst between IND/MIA/SAS)
2028 FRP Swap (Minnesota)
2029 FRP (Minnesota, 6-30 Protected)
2029 SRP (Minnesota)
2030 FRP Swap (Second worst between MIN/DAL/SAS)*
2030 SRP (Memphis, Protected 31-50)
2031 SRP (Better of MIN/GSW)
2032 FRP Swap (Minnesota)
2032 SRP (Minnesota)

*Protected first overall, which could also be swapped.

Phoenix owns the worst hodgepodge of protected swaps imaginable on all of those even years (ex: 2026 is worst of MEM/ORL/WAS and 2028 is worst of BRK/NYK/WAS with a funky PHI pick component), so maybe there is a funky trade to be had where Minnesota offers up all available swaps, whatever weird protected FRP’s that they have, their remaining SRP’s, and the listed players above?

Feels unlikely and too weak of a package, but it is technically possible.

The absolute minimum Minnesota could offer Phoenix from a salary perspective would be...

MIN: Kevin Durant ($54,708,609)
OUT: Julius Randle ($30,935,520), Mike Conely ($11,990,000), Rob Dillingham ($6,576,120), Josh Minott ($2,187,451 TO), and #20 ($3,049,000) = $54,738,091
PICKS: #20, #32, 2026 FRP Swap (MIN/UTA), 2028 FRP Swap, 2029 FRP (6-30 Protected), 2030 FRP Swap (2nd of MIN/SAS/DAL), and 2032 FRP Swap, along with whatever miscellaneous seconds.

That clearly is not enough value wise for Kevin Durant, but pretending that it is for the sake of the salary discussion, Minnesota would be at $174,781,823 with Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Rudy Gobert, Jaden McDaniels, Donte DiVincenzo, and Terrence Shannon Jr. Bring back Luka Garza and Leonard Miller puts Minnesota at $179,353,078 (it becomes $179,190,951 if you swap Luka Garza and Josh Minott in the trade, but we'll stick with the first number). I think Jaylen Clark's deal bumps it up to roughly $180.4MM, but the details aren't public yet.

Donte DiVincenzo /
Anthony Edwards / Jaylen Clark
Jaden McDaniels / Terrence Shannon Jr.
Kevin Durant / Leonard Miller
Rudy Gobert / Luka Garza

Minnesota would have roughly $27.5MM to (Second Apron is projected to be at $207,825,000) sign five more players. The taxpayer MLE is projected to be set at $5,685,000, which First Apron teams can use.

(Again, in reality Minnesota would likely have to find more value in the trade, but just breaking down the financial situation to provide context.)

If Naz picked up his deal and took the unlikely four year extension (or the less likely one year PO minor pay increase), it is completely doable to flesh out the last four roster slots on $12.5MM.

That said, I don't think that Naz Reid would consider that. He is (deservedly) going to want to be paid, which likely means that trading for Kevin Durant probably isn't in the cards (even from the most ridiculous underpay scenario), without also trading Donte DiVincenzo somewhere.

Donte DiVincenzo /
Anthony Edwards / Jaylen Clark
Jaden McDaniels / Terrence Shannon Jr.
Kevin Durant / Naz Reid / Leonard Miller
Rudy Gobert / Luka Garza
+Four low-salary players

The above is fun to think about, and is an absolute no-brainer if the teams could pull it off. It would be completely ridiculous not to do it, and I reject any suggestion that it would be the wrong move (and I like Nickeil Alexander-Walker!). Unfortunately, with Naz Reid needing to be paid and the limitations of the Second Apron, it just doesn't seem like it is in the cards while also keeping Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert (alongside one of Donte DiVencenzo or Nickeil-Alexander Walker). One of those two (likely Rudy) would have to go, which changes the discussion completely.

If we make a trade for him I would only be willing to move Randle, NAW and maybe Dilly.

2. Can you sign and trade two players in the same trade? If Randle opts out can we sign and trade Randle and NAW?

Is Randle, NAW, Dilly and the Pistons 1st over paying for 1yrs o f Durant? Or could we give them the Utah 2nd pick in place of the 1st?

Dilly is really the only piece in our future so see it as a low risk.

1. If Randle opts in, MIN can trade him to anyone. If we use NAW in a sign and trade, teams that are over the FIRST apron (like PHX for now), can’t accept players in a sign-and-trade, it doesn’t mean we couldn’t send him to a third team. But be aware in a sign and trade, the player doesn’t have to sign, and the higher the salary we sign a player for to reach our outgoing salary, the worse his trade value gets.

2. Yes, you can send two players out in a sign and trade, to teams under the first apron.

So you bring up a good point. If we needed to reach $54 mil in outgoing salary, technically we could just trade Randle for $31 and give NAW a one year, $23 mil contract and trade him. That’s way more than NAW will produce on the floor (I’m thinking maybe $10), but could you attach the DET 1st, and get BRK to absorb it, while they wait for next year’s better FA class? Maybe. But that also means cuts elsewhere for us to slide under the second apron, so we’d have no money to keep Naz.

I am hoping that is enough and doesn't involve JMcD and Naz. The last few games KD isn't the young KD anymore

The problem though is that the trade hard caps the team at the second apron, meaning we can’t add $1 more in salary over that number for any reason. So even with Bird rights on Naz, the hard cap would set a second limit on our overall payroll.

Dom said it above and it remains true, there are few if any good scenarios for bringing in KD and keeping Naz. Short of an ACL tear or an Achilles tear, Naz is gonna make at least 25. That 10 million+ is hard to find when you add KD’s 54 to Ant and Rudy. Jaden, Naz, and DDV all seem like guys who could fit with Ant in a championship run. DDV can play some minutes at the 1 (don’t love it,) some at the backup 2, and some at the backup 3.) He can easily find 30 MPG. Beyond those 4 I suspect TSJ and NAW might be good long term pieces. Clark is a mixed bag and we need to see more. He must develop the offense and prove he can sustain the defense through 82 games. Dilly is an open question, but we don’t need the answer right now. Everyone else is probably not on the team in 3 years. Assuming this and assuming no KD trade, we have 2 picks (mid first, early 2nd,) room for tax payer MLE, and the opportunity to start building the Ant window. Trade for KD and you lose the draft assets, you lose NAW, probably Dilly, probably Naz, and now you are nowhere.

I think maybe add KD, draft picks or young players and out NAW, NAZ, Randle, filler. Can we keep Dilly because Conley is going to be a coach?

It’s hard for me to pick which is more likely (or least painful!)

The case for Naz would be that Durant duplicates a lot of what he does. Naz is due a new contract. Connelly was going to let Naz walk two years ago, but Taylor stopped him.

The case for Jaden is that since he’s more expensive, it would allow Connelly to keep either Mike Conley or DDV, whichever he felt more attached to (if a deal didn’t require DDV’s value).

So, NAW(Dillingham)/Ant/Jaden/Durant/Gobert or DDV(Conley?)/Ant/Naz?/Durant/Gobert?

I also wanted to mention that a trade for KD at the deadline gave MIN an additional shot in the playoffs this year, plus the salary gap is smaller, with Durant making less than this summer, and Randle making more. Still, a rising second apron this summer will help. Also, a deal a few weeks ago wouldn’t require Randle to opt in, and players like Naz couldn’t stop a trade by refusing to S&T (which is an additional problem for second apron teams to receive a S&T!). A KD trade will be messier this summer.

Nobody wants to guess which Connelly was willing to trade: Naz or Jaden?

history says TC would want to keep Jaden, was not willing to put him Gobert trade at supposedly the cost of additional draft picks

Interesting stats:

PHO are 3rd in C&S threes, MIN are 15th
PHO are 26th in off dribble threes, MIN are 2nd
PHO are 4th in transition, MIN are 23rd
PHO are 4th in 3pt%, MIN are 5th
PHO are 7th in 3pt made, MIN are 5th

Before the game against PHO I have heard that KD is not a superstar anymore. Well, he might not give you 56 pts like Curry, but I was impressed how much team work he did against us. He executed perfect go-ahead pass in transition, dump off pass to Plumlee, kick off pass to open Booker on perimeter, blocked Naz layup, made tough 3pt shot and a few very difficult off balance mid range shots. At the end of the game he had 26pts, 10rbs, 4ast, 2blocks. Not bad for washed up 36yo. But I agree he is not a superstar player in PHO in terms of bending opponent defense with his will. I have also heard that KD is not a system player, that he was not a system player in GSW. Well, watching him playing against us I thought that he is indeed as a system player. PHO have zero rim pressure from ballhanders and bigs, look at stats I mentioned above, yet KD is still generating a lot of their offense by playing his game. So who can be KD for us? I think he can a perfect 2nd option who can elevate this team. He has experience and talent to fit next to our guys and he is still doing all little things like rebounding, moving the ball, passing the ball. He is not a one dimensional scorer such as Beal, but he is high level shot maker that fits very well next to bunch of slashers such as Edwards, Reid and McDaniels, TJ. Meanwhile he can be trusted to run our offense through him as offensive hub, as secondary facilitator. I feel like his next contract should be viewed accordingly.

Anyone trading anything significant for Kevin Durant is going to end up like the last 2 teams that tried it:
In a full scale rebuild.

Hard pass.
This team is also going absolutely nowhere until it finds a functional PG.

I think we've exhausted all possible options and concluded it's impossible to get KD early in the summer without losing one or more very significant pieces of the rotation. What about this then - is it possible financially that Randle opts in, Wolves make the DET pick and keep it, re-sign both Naz and NAW, fill out the roster without going over the 2nd apron and then make the above "minimal" trade for KD after everyone is re-signed?

I'd say MIN need a quality playmaker regardless of position. Pairing our comboguards with Edwards and KD is one way to improve offense. Obviously adding a passing big won't hurt either

The financial section of that post is laid out to show the absolute absolute extent to which Minnesota could afford to trade for Kevin Durant. There isn't any fancy workarounds, barring substantial changes to the trade. There is absolutely no world where Minnesota can keep Nickeil Alexander-Walker without increasing the outgoing salary that I indicated in that post (changing the players involved inthe trade). Again, keep in mind that is the bare minimum in the event that Naz Reid miraculously picked up his Player Option.

If Minnesota is aggregating salaries, they MUST stay below the Second Apron. That isn't a "to save money" thing, it is a firm rule requirement. Minnesota cannot dip into the Second Apron for ANY reason, should they trade for Kevin Durant.

I think two things are incredibly clear.

1. If you can obtain Kevin Durant while keeping Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, and Rudy Gobert, you obviously do it. I am frankly baffled at the takes suggesting otherwise.
2. That is extraordinarily unlikely to happen from a salary cap perspective, and expectations should be set accordingly.

Truthfully, I think Minnesota should consider it even if that means moving on from Naz Reid, but that's an entirely different discussion.

Unfortunately, no. Kevin Durant does not have a Player Option next year, so he can't renegotiate downwards.

To what end? Do you expect Ant/KD/Jaden/Naz/Rudy to win a championship? If not how do you justify the assets you give up to get KD? What makes you think KD stays for 3 years if we are not a contender? What makes you think we can afford KD at 60+ million at age 38? You are baffled because I and others like me don’t want to push all our chips into the middle with a losing hand. Unless of course you think it is a winning hand?

They would absolutely have a shot at winning the title with that squad, it’s absolutely stacked!

The trade offers that come out of keeping the players that I outlined in my post are comically mediocre-to-trash for Phoenix. You are hyperventilating over garbage-tier assets.

The point of my post is that it is wild to be against getting Kevin Durant for the bare-minimum, while also illustrating how unlikely that scenario is to pull off.

I disagree. We would be giving up draft picks, young players who might be necessary in 2-3 years (when Ant, Jaden, and Naz are in their prime,) and it all might be for a one year Durant rental. Having a solid starting 5 is great, but what is behind them matters to. Also remember Jaden only took 9 shots last game. When you have so many players who need the ball they can diminish one another. I have serious doubts that we win a title with a shallow bench behind that starting 5, and I have serious doubts that KD is a long term part of this team. In the absence of that any trade is net loss.

I still don't think we're even in the Top 3 most likely destinations for KD.

My best guess is Houston.
