Trading for him would be abysmal in the hypothetical world that he was fully healthy. I've posted the numbers a million times over the years, but the fascination around him has always boggled my mind.
You are talking about prior to last season? What about prior to the trade to ATL? I am honestly asking as I don’t know the answer.
Can't pull up stats at the moment, but DeJounte Murray is a really weird player where he got a reputation as a defender in San Antonio (he was solid his first couple of seasons in that scheme), but since his second second, he has largely graded out as a mediocre to bad defender (it got way worse when he was traded to Atlanta, he's a big-time gambler on that side of the court). Add that to him being pretty inefficient offensively for someone that ball dominant, and I have always been super against trading for him. I was astonished that New Orleans broke the bank for him, after Atlanta had already made the mistake years prior.
I'm pretty much his biggest detractor on the forum, his impact stats are just a mess for someone that ball dominant. Would really hate his fit next to Anthony Edwards, I would hope Minnesota could find another route to fix the Point-Guard problem.

Headline should read “Minnesota Timberwolves badly need to fire GM and HC before disaster strikes a franchise that had made it out of the first round only 3 times in its 36 year history.” This is the mistake that turns the Ant window into the rebuild window. This is the moment you will look back on and wish ownership had stopped the madness. Congrats, our golden era is on life support and about to end.
It is because we only make it out of 1st round 3 times that I am taking a chance with KD. Twice under Connelly. We will figure out if it's madness or genius if/when it happens and what the trade look like. Worse case, you clear salary in two years when Gobert and KD contracts expire. So just Ant and look for two free agents to build around. Wolves are in the free agent era now and we need to shift away from draft to build mindset.
1. Name the 3 biggest free agents we have ever been able to sign, much less on favorable money.
2. In 26/27 Jaden costs 26.2, Naz will cost somewhere in the ballpark of 26.2, Ant will approximately 48.9. Those 3 guys alone will cost 26.2 + 26.2 + 48.9= $101.3 million. The projected salary cap is 154.6. That means you have 154.6 - 101.3 =53.3 to build around. That is before you factor the other contracts on the payroll. That is at most one max slot and probably not that. If KD leaves or demands the max, the team has no chance whatsoever of survival. The only possible way forward is if KD demands the minimum to stay, and even then, we won’t be contenders, because we will lack depth, roster balance, and assets to acquire either. This team is over if we trade for KD.
We never attempted to get big name free agents here during KG era. I think it will change with Ant. Gobert's last year is 27/28. If you time everything to that (summer of 28), we will have 86M in salary and cap will be around 180. You sign KG to two more years. We have a 3 year window. The question really is can we keep JMcD in the process. Do we believe he will be an all star? Also who else we need to give up.

The hard part about this conversation is not knowing what is left. But any version of a trade for KD takes away all the money that could have been used, (as well as the trade assets,) to balance last seasons roster. In a season with at least 4 stronger WC teams, (relative to last year,) I don’t see any version of our roster that isn’t significantly worse.
If we are in fact worse and it becomes clear we will not go to the WCF (a virtual certainty,) then it will become clear to KD that his career would end here without sniffing any further glory. He has no incentive to stay outside of a huge payday which in turn further buries us. After 3 bad years in a row, Ant is gone and the franchise is back to tanking.

Does Durant put wilves ahead of OKC? OKC still has a better head coach, by a lot.

Half the league has cap space in 2026. Unless he commits to immediately signing an extension here, you don’t trade assets to get him for one year.
We already have no draft picks. If we trade our remaining few assets, this fizzles next season, and Durant walks; you are just asking for Ant to demand a trade, longterm contract here or not.

From an on-the-court perspective, it's a pretty big bummer, but it is what it is. Him opting for those destinations kind of indicates that he wants no state income tax on his final contract.

I hope the Wolves offer for Durant takes this into account. No way should Minnesota pay a premium price for what looks like a real possibility of only being a single season.

Saw that. Interesting that he chose Florida and Texas the two states that have no income tax. Guess he's happy with his ring count.

Shams:
The Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs and Houston Rockets are 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant's preferred trade destinations out of Phoenix, sources tell ESPN. Those across the NBA have been made aware in recent days that those are the three teams that Durant would commit to long-term.
Durant is on an expiring $54.7 million deal for 2025-26, and the Suns have made clear to six-to-eight seriously interested teams that they will make the best deal for the franchise – even outside of his preferred list of Miami, San Antonio and Houston.

Unfortunately, Vegas had the Spurs in a heavy lead a week ago, so degenerate gamblers are going all-in on every news cycle.

From you keyboard to… the universe itself. Now Ant will be happy we tried and we can trade for an actual Point Guard.

More than that, he wants to take a max and pad his bank account. Tax breaks on a discount deal wouldn’t matter, and we wouldn’t want to pay a 38 and 39 year old KD the full max.
