Re: The Naz Reid Thread
I read it this way:
1) Naz had to take tough shots (because he often was on the floor with non shooters such as Anderson, McLaughlin) as only reliable scorer.
2) Naz might be first beneficiary of Joe Ingles, TSJ and Rob addition. Reid-Ingles-TSJ-Rob combination of shooting, passing and fast pace is going to be special
3) Naz has kind of contract year

Nah, Naz only played 368 minutes with McLaughlin. SlowMo, yeah, those line-ups were incredible in terms of Net-Rating [+6.20 with Naz/SlowMo together] but weren't great offensively but instead defensively.

100%. 5-out line-ups with ANT as a lead ball-handler.

Re: The Naz Reid Thread
I thought Naz was a “three’s and lay ups” guy? His three’s are usually catch-and-shoot, but I suppose above the break. His layups aren’t difficult, though his drive to get there often is.
I probably don’t know how they they quantify a difficult shot.
Good company in that top five. Offensive engines.

Re: The Naz Reid Thread
How comfortable you are building around Edwards, Reid and McDaniels core? I personally concern about size, as we would need more physical guys next to Reid and McDaniels to play same brand of aggressive defense. But if TSJ, Rob, Miller and Clark fullfil their potential I will feel much more optimistic moving forward after Gobert, Conley expire.

I don’t think Naz Reid is anywhere close to being a franchise player. I like Naz, he’s a great story and a testament to working hard, and his rate of improvement means he can’t be discounted. He has a sexy game with his handle. That said, he is not a good passer, rebounder and not good defensively, which is important for bigs. I would never limit Naz and say he won’t get better, but right now, to me, he is a fourth starter/sixth man who can score.

I think MIN fans are kind of spoiled because we have Gobert, Towns, Edwards and Reid and McDaniels. That's a lot of talent for average NBA team. That said I agree that Reid might not be a franchise player yet. However, if Edwards grows into Jokic level (read MVP level), then Ant will elevate the game of other players (same statement that Jake made in video above about Edwards-Reid connection). In this case you can win with less "talented" players around, but who are better fit. Think more about Jokic-Murray-MPJ-Gordon-KCP-Brown, than Tatum-Brown-Holiday-KP-Horford-White.

I don't love that Paynting labeled the video with 'franchise player' in the thumbnail. However, I think it's important to clearly differentiate the terms 'franchise player' and 'core player' before going further. I think that while it is unlikely Reid will ever be a franchise player, I think he can absolutely be a core player for the franchise going forward. Think Udonis Haslem. He was never a franchise player, but you don't play 20 seasons for the same franchise after coming into the league as an undrafted free agent and playing a season overseas if you are not a core player.

I went to the State Fair yesterday, and to cool off, I went into the Ag Building and saw “seed art.”
Three different people entered Naz Reid seed art. I didn’t see any other athletes from any sports in the whole place.

Re: The Naz Reid Thread
Losing Naz because of f Kat or Rudy would be a huge mistake. Players like this who continue to work on their game and have great attitudes with the community and teammates are too valuable. He's worth a couple of missed stats by replacing Kat or Rudy. Sometimes its addition by subtraction. I always believed that Naz would be Kats replacement. especially now that Kat has a knee issue and no longer adds to his game. Rudys production can be replaces. The nuggets are done and we could use a faster C now.

Re: The Naz Reid Thread
I really hope the Wolves keep Naz since I see Naz/KAT as the key pieces of the long term PF/C rotation. The thing I've been thinking about is the defense from the 2021-22 season (before Rudy). The Wolves finished 13th in defensive rating while playing DLO, Beasley, and Nowell over 5000 minutes combined. That makes me believe the current roster could be solidly in the 10 on defense even without Rudy (while taking a huge leap into the top 5 on offense due to better spacing and pace).

Re: The Naz Reid Thread
Is there any incentive for Naz Reid to pick up his player option next summer?
I understand the security of locking up a longterm deal, but I also think about the NBA economic landscape. Not only will the available money continue to grow year over year especially with the new media deal, but I also expect the pool of teams with cap space could grow if he waited another year. He's getting to the point where he is a known commodity, so would an injury really hurt his next contract? Sure he could improve it any more, but I don't think an injury would drop his value from where it will be at next summer.

Financially, probably not. Loyalty, probably so. It will depend, I think, on if Gobert picks up his PO or if Gobert & the Wolves agree on a new contract extension. I see Naz playing more this season.

Good answer. The obvious part of a player option is that the player controls it.
Financially, Naz is still underpaid, though likely not as much as most people expect. The main thing that Naz brings to a team is scoring, and unless you are a team’s top two guy in scoring, you generally don’t get paid as much, because most every NBA player can score in a support role - they don’t get into the NBA if they can’t. Yesterday we heard score-first Lonnie Walker had to accept a camp deal because no one wanted to give him a vet min. Perhaps a better comp would be 6MOY Malik Monk
Naz 5.2 RPG, 1.3 APG, 13.5 PPG, eFG% 57.6%
Monk 2.9 RPG, 5.1 APG, 15.1 PPG, eFG% 52.6%
Monk also wanted to stay with his team, and signed a contract for $56.4 for three years, and a $21 mil PO. Monk’s deal is $17.4 mil this year. We love Naz, but we might be over-estimating what a new contract would look like.

Re: The Naz Reid Thread
The other point I’d make is that Naz’s $15 mil PO for next year might help him be more appealing to financially-strapped MIN, because he MIGHT opt in. It’s pretty unlikely, but if the Wolves roll into February looking like a true contender, Naz may want to avoid being traded (or have teammates traded), and he may value getting a chance at a ring next year as more valuable than the extra millions he can make. You never know what a player truly values (money, the city, rings, teammates, opportunity), until you see his second free agent contract, and last year Naz passed up some money to stay here.
Also, it should be pointed out that if Naz waits until next summer to waive his player option next summer, MIN can’t trade him that summer - he’s an unrestricted free agent. The only teams that can pay him more are cap space teams, because he will have effectively ended his Bird rights, so this limits his choices to where he can choose to go.
Said another way, if Naz wants to go elsewhere to get more money and more opportunity, it’s better for both him and the team for MIN to work together on a trade before the deadline, to one of his selected destinations where he plans to re-sign next summer with his Bird rights.
