Trade Talk (Part Nine) (READ FIRST POST)

For years, I’ve dreamed of pairing KAT’s unique game with Myles Turner or JJJ. I still do to some extent. Realistically though, neither has ever grown into becoming the dominant player I had hoped. Both would be a big help - but neither is a star.

Could they become stars here, next to KAT? There probably isn’t a player in the league that would be better for them, but at this point, I don’t know if it’s going to happen for either of them. They would definitely improve the team, but at what price?

Do we need a star next to Towns?

Vando would be perfect if he could hit 3s and even then he’d be pretty far from a star.

I'd just be happy if Vando could catch the ball and dunk. He offers absolutely nothing offensively, outside of his rebounding.

I think we absolutely need to look into acquiring 2 veteran proven rotational players. Beverly has been huge. Adding 2 guys that we could rely on to take over the Prince, Okogie, Balmaro, Mclaughlin, Etc. minutes would be huge. Ideally would be a wing and a big, or a combo guard/big. Just someone who can hit open shots, and not be a liability on one end of the floor. This offense creates open looks for our roleplayers, they just have been awful at making the other team pay.

People talk about Towns' perfect complement being someone with the skillset of a prime Ibaka. I'm not sure anyone in the league is closer to that than Myles Turner...

Whether that opportunity comes in Indiana remains to be seen, as a report from Shams Charania recently said that all three of Turner, Domantas Sabonis and Caris Levert were candidates to be traded.“I’m not a finished product. I’m just scratching the surface and I want to show that I’m ready to take the next step,” Turner said. He added that he’s basically a “glorified role player” in Indiana, so it’s pretty obvious that he wouldn’t mind a change in scenery

Under normal circumstances this might be a red flag, for us this is crimson. KAT is the superstar, Ant is the superstar in training and Dlo is the final leg of the “big three.” A max contract PG who an ideal world can drop 20 and still get 8-10 assists. Myles Turner wants to be part of a big 3 or even #1 or #2. His opportunities here will not be on the level he is talking about. Ironically I do think he would thrive here and become a star (if he isn’t already,) but this is just not the situation he is describing.

I mean, it wouldn't be hard to do. Run some similar actions for him that we do Towns, especially when KAT is on the bench. But whether or not that would be a good idea is the real question.

It's funny because the reason he's such a hot commodity with every other teams is because of this particular role he's played so far

And the reason teams are trading for him is for him to continue said hated role. Lol sorry Myles. If you come to the Wolves, you're probably going to get even less opportunity to shine, and will be especially pressured to play top notch defense on a nightly basis while you only shoot spot up 3's.

Lol everyone from every team is throwing bench/scrub players for Turner in their trade scenarios. Not calling out anyone or any teams in particular, but I just find that hilarious We're talking about a premier defensive big who can stretch the floor, and people want to think he can be had for a couple pennies.

If the Wolves really want him, they will have to part with DLo at the minimum (which I'm okay with).

I think Vucevic is more in line with what he would get traded for but Vuc did have an extra year of team control (at higher $) than Turner does, and he got back Wendall Carter who was a meh but a rotation player with upside at age 21, top 4 protected pick in next draft which ended up being #8 (Bulls I'm sure were hoping it would be more like #14), and then a top 4 protected pick in two years, which if Bulls maintain form will be in the 20s

Again, that extra year of team control with Vuc is a big deal, and Vuc is just a better, more skilled player than Turner so I wouldn't expect quite as good a package, but Orlando got back three legit pieces

I continue to think kleber is the ideal/affordable complement to KAT both on offense and defense. He can switch onto the perimeter on D and knock down 3s as a 5th option. I will keep thinking of 3 team scenarios to get him to Minny

The Spurs rarely do mid-season trades, but Pop might okay it since he isn’t getting enough playing time, and he was really just salary ballast in the DeRozan deal. Since Thad has said as much to the media, Pops might let him go just to help Thad’s career (and improve the Spurs reputation for helping players’ careers). I think they’d say yes to any neutral package, as long as we didn’t get outbid. Thad’s expiring.

PJ Washington is in a bad spot as well, crowded by other PF’s in Charlotte. He’s also a higher end bench player that could help that shouldn’t cost much in trade assets. He’s on the last year of rookie scale and not expensive, so maybe we could do a salary-matching three way, sending out Okogie to a third team that could send the Hornets a back up center, plus we send CHA a second. I think Okogie is also a comparable bench, rotation-level,player, and I’m not sure we are keeping him. It would give another team a chance to see if Josh fits in, before deciding whether to sign him to guaranteed contract this summer.

PJ and Nance, another player I like, are more of the Rosas-style big wings, so they aren’t perfect, but I think they would help. In POR, with Chauncey Billups challenging his players effort, Okogie might be a breath of fresh air. Nance is also a worker, and the second year on his deal gives him extra value. I wouldn’t want to give up a first except for a sure starter, but Okogie and additional smaller assets (Nowell? Two 2nds?) might be worth offering.

You’re probably right. He’s only been “okay” for POR, and there is always the chance that Crohn’s disease takes him out, but his value probably hasn’t gone down. I don’t like the idea of including even a lottery protected 1st from MIN, which could still be a good pick, for a borderline starter/bench player. I agree we’d probably get outbid by someone.

Assuming Simmons deal is essentially dead...now that, POR seems closer to at least blowing it up (which probably saves Morey's job).

Turner would be next on my wish list, but like many hear...I fear the cost might be crazy & on a side note which I haven't seen much of....but if a deal would be done for him....I'd have to assume Naz would be in said deal...it's best way to maximize value from him....as any rosters that have KAT & Turner--probably doesn't have rotation minutes available for Naz then (remember that Naz & Nowell for that matter....really need they're last year's deal voided to have rfa rights on them this summer...if they play the 4th year of the Hinkie special they get Ufa status following offseason).

After that, I like the rest of your list as fallback options...where I see potentially them maybe even being part of a 3-team deal with Indy...where the SA or CHA gets the Turner or Sabonis & we get the pf & maybe a shooter for our filler & say Indy gets some added draft capital out of us?

Money-wise all of Prince, Okogie, Beasley and Layman would be enough to cover both Turner and Levert without either team going into the lux. Then just season with picks.

Turner I love and while I understand why people don't like Levert I do think someone like him who can create for himself is better in theory as a 6th man than someone like Beasley who is so absurdly reliant on others to generate his offence.

I do think we'll have to overpay even to just get Turner at this point. If they're having a sale there will be a LOT of buyers, especially for either Turner or Sabonis.

I see the Indy situation & value their guys very similar to what you've posted.

See Sabonis as a very bad fit here.

And while the holes in LeVert's game are obvious....he does have value as a 6th man...because he can create/playmake some....another thing that this roster doesn't have enough of. So if I could get him & say a shooter (Duarte or Brissette) for Beasley & an asset or two...I'd be in. I know they love both those guys but throwing one in to be able to better maximize LeVert return probably will be necessary.

I don't know if he's actually worth a first but Portland WILL be asking for one in trade and I'd imagine some contender would happily throw a late 1st at them to get a guy like Nance.

Cannot trade Reid for Turner without another move for more size and depth. The only way I give Ant for Simmons is if I get Maxey and Curry back as well.

Towns seems even more unhappy here. It’s ironic, he is causing his team to lose by not shooting more, not cleaning up his offensive fouls, missing a lot of free throws lately, and way overselling the perimeter trap (basically taking himself out of the play,) yet he is angry we are losing. Without Dlo things get tougher. Playing a team with Cleveland’s size makes things tougher, playing a stretch of games against all playoff level teams makes things tougher. But, when things get tough the tough get going, and KAT needs to step the **** up and get moving. Otherwise, now might be the time to move him and Dlo and try to get 2 star level talents and 2 high functioning role players.

Honestly I am not sure Ant reaches superstar level, but if KAT demands out we lose a ton of value and it may be better to sell high then risk a distress sale.

Curry is better for our needs, and Philly is getting a number one overall pick from just one season ago. A player who is showing true superstar potential (needs a bit of seasoning, but will get there. They are also getting Beasley who while not as good as Curry is a capable replacement, and Prince who is expiring. That 3 for 3 frees up a ton of salary by replacing Simmons with Ant. We don’t need to settle for Green. Meanwhile, Simmons becomes the slashing threat and Towns gets some improved shooters to pass to.

Let’s be clear about something. Even if we did my trade Simmons is going to be out of shape this season. You will be lucky if he plays before the all star break (assuming we made the trade on the 15th of this month,) and even then he won’t be his usual self for quite a while. His salary will
Also be a big problem for us trying to improve the team. But, KAT is the much better player than Ant, and if we want to keep KAT (bit of a question in that statement,) trading two struggling players and future superstar, for Simmons and two up and comers might help.
