Thanks for the input, guys.

I think of all four of these guys as decent rotation players, that are about worth their contracts. Beasley is younger and his third year is a team option, but McDermott is bigger 6-7 and plays SF and PF. I think he is a slightly better defender (he stays in the scheme), and while our defense struggles when our two guards are DLo and Beasley (who guards the best opponent?), I’m a lot more comfortable with McDermott and either Jaden or Vando. Finally, McDermott is an excellent three point shooter too. Beasley may take harder three’s and more of them, but McDermott’s spot up ability would work fine here. I hadn’t realized that his last five years, McDermott’s 3P% has been .426, .408, .435, .388, .419.

I have liked what I’ve seen of Nowell and Bolmaro too, and I’d like to see minutes open up for him, as well as getting Ant more of Beasley’s SG minutes at his best position. I could see a rotation of

DLo, Beverley
Ant, Nowell/Bolmaro
McDermott, Jaden
Vando, Thad
KAT, Naz

.. and either of the SF’s or PF’s could start, depending on the match up.

Why for Spurs? Beasley started slowly this season, but is hitting three’s now, (43% in his last four). He’s five years younger than McDermott, and his third year is a team option. Thad Young gets some DNP-CD’s and has politely asked for a trade, so they show him some respect and move him to a past team.

Why for Wolves? McDermott turns 30 in a few weeks, but big enough to play SF/PF vs Beasley at SG. He’s not a good defender - at 6-7, he’s too big and slow to guard SF’s well, and gets pushed around by PF’s. However, I think you can play him with Vando or Jaden because he is a reliable three point shooter. Thad Young we’ve discussed, but he gets us bigger and needs to be guarded at the three point line. Both players are older, but maybe we could use more vet presence.

Thad Young, $14.19
McDermott. $13.75, $13.75, $13.75

Prince. $15.06.
Beasley $14.39, $15.46, $16.52 team option

Same idea, different implementation. Harris, Sharpe for Beasley, Okogie(or Layman) and two 2nds.

KAT/Reid/Knight + Sharpe
Vando/MCD/Layman
Edwards/Harris/Prince
Beverly/Bolmaro/Nowell
DLo/Nowell/JMac + Wright

DLo and Harris played well together in Brooklyn, also this trade opens opportunity for Nowell/Bolmaro. Also I am very intrigued by Sharpe potential. This guy is really big.

I'd be interested in a Bagley for Prince swap. While Bagley has never been particularly good, he does have many of the characteristics that I'd be looking for in a big. Basically, Bagley has legitimate size and plus athleticism which is a good combination for what the Wolves defensive scheme needs. He's also a decent rebounder (something that is desperately needed) and has enough offensive game to force opposing teams to guard him. Overall he'd be a good gamble to take. If he fits in and figures it out he'd be a major plus, if not his contract expires at the end of the year.

Trade that helps fit for both teams

Kemba $8,729,020 $9,165,471
Noel $8,800,000 $9,240,000 $9,680,000 (team option)
Knox $5,845,978 RFA

Wolves trade
Beasley $14,491,964 $15,558,035 $16,524,106 (team option)
Prince $13,000,000

Why for Knicks: Get two veteran players that can play next to their playmakers Rose/Quigley/Burks in wing spots, bet that they will revert back to career forms in different environment. Get out of the Kemba locker room issue. Noel is the only rotation player going out and Robinson is similar player and have Taj/Toppin to take up the backup minutes, gain some $ space next season.

Why for Wolves: get a desperately needed creator in Kemba without losing the shooting that Beasley theoretically brings, legitimate defensive big in Noel, hope Knox is just one of those young players that Thibs doesn't trust but can play a role, gain some luxury tax room.

Kemba had some scary on/off #s but should still be fine in a bench pick/roll run-the-offense through role than Beasley isn't capable of, and while Beasley's better than Kemba defensively since he's bigger and not as easily exploited, not like its a huge step down. Knox last year had pretty similar role as what Prince has had this season and Noel gives the Wolves someone who can actually slow down the elite bigs

What bothers me at this point after watching already what this team can do is people believing that we just need little adjustments to be good. Or in the case of the Timberwolves, good means to be a treadmill at best.

When the Wolves lost that pick and a chance at Mobley it was obvious wolves were destined for the threadmill and that won’t change unless they get lucky in the 2022 draft and find a future star.

I don't hate it, though I'd rather cut both Knox and Prince and sub Okogie in. Still saves us money this year while saving them money next year and beyond.

It only makes sense for NY if they move Fournier first however.

https://sportsnaut.com/3-minnesota-timberwolves-trades-playoff-contention/

I rarely read articles about Wolves trades that do very well understanding the Wolves, but this writer does a pretty good job. If you don’t want to read his reasoning, here are his three trades:

Minnesota Timberwolves trade: 2023 first-round pick (Top-8 protected), Taurean Prince, Josh Okogie
Indiana Pacers trade: Myles Turner

This trade may not seem so appealing to the Pacers on the surface, but for a rebuilding team, the $17 million in cap relief as the contracts of Prince and Okogie fall off the books at the end of the season is quite valuable. The first-round pick just gives them more ammo to build their foundation, however they choose.

Minnesota Timberwolves trade: 2023 first-round pick (Top-3 protected), Malik Beasley, Jaden McDaniels, two 2022 second-round picks
New Orleans Pelicans trade: Jonas Valanciunas, Devonte’ Graham

Of the three trades listed, this one may help the Wolves the most. In Valanciunas, they get the rebounding hog who isn’t afraid to do the dirty work. He can also hit threes at a low clip (career-high 46.3% this season) and can help protect the rim, using his 6-foot-11 frame. The fifth overall pick from 2011 averages exactly one block per game throughout his nine-year career.

Minnesota Timberwolves trade: 2022 first-round pick (Top-3 protected), two additional future first-round picks, Patrick Beverley, Leandro Bolmaro, Taurean Prince
Philadelphia 76ers trade: Ben Simmons

I think a Turner trade might cost McDaniels and a 1st, honestly. Something like Prince, McDaniels, Layman and a 1st for Turner and our old friend Kelan Martin works and keeps everyone under the lux.

But yeah, I just see us getting outbid otherwise.

With the way McDaniels plays, his tendency to be tentative, you play your Yankees card and trade prospects for proven.
Put him in a Turner or Simmons deal any day. Preferably Turner.

So combining a few posts. McDermott isn’t bad but thinking he fixes the front court issues is wrong. His 6’7” isn’t going to affect much more than Okogie at 6’6” or whatever. It’s us playing Laphonso Ellis a 6’7” SF at C saying could be worse.

Kemba, Knox, and Noel deal I like. Potential fits without gutting the main rotation much.

Like Joe Harris but don’t see it moving the needle.

Yes on a Prince and filler for Bagley deal. Low risk and potential to be a Bobby Portis type reward.

Turner in a heartbeat.
Valanciunas feel like a bit too much but wouldn’t hate it.
Simmons starting to lose interest but only the lack of flexibility and cost controlled help is my main hesitance

I’m hesitant to bid on Turner alone, but I would outbid teams if we could get Levert as well.

One thing that I hope happens soon after December 15th is that Simmons gets moved (even if he most likely goes somewhere else). I'm tired of the Wolves refusing to trade any assets while waiting. It's well past time for Minnesota to make a move to improve/balance the roster.

I don’t think the magic word for this phenomenon is Simmons. I think it is Gupta. I doubt the ownership group has actual confidence in him and I think that lack of confidence might cause us to stand pat and watch the season burn. We all know we need size or this season is on a one way trip to a dumpster fire near us, the question is do we have someone (GM, owner, ect…) who can make it happen.

I'll be happy with Turner or Simmons, but what happens to Vando?

He is absolutely an all 1st team defender this year, he can't be coming off the bench

At this point I'm not sure I blame Gupta. He came in right before the season started and hasn't really had much chance to deal yet (since few if any teams have been interested in trades up to this point of the season). I firmly blame Rosas for sitting on his hands all off-season. Now that the trade market should be opening up, I really hope Gupta isn't going to follow suit and that he'll be aggressive and willing to make a deal that helps the team even if it means bowing out of the Simmons debacle.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
