This moment makes me think that this team still has a lot of potential even with limited in offense С such as Gobert. Not to mention improved rebounding and defense from Naz in last games.
This is a very basic play in Finch's system. If the lane is closed, Rudy has the option to pass it out to the wings.
I think about sets like this often when I think about roster construction. As I said, this is one of the most basic, core plays in the Finch system. And I do think there's something to the fact that many of the bigger-named point guards wouldn't be a fit here in this system for this reason.
Obviously, individual lineups can change, but I think this shows that the PF/C combination is the biggest key to plays like this, not necessarily the lead guard (Conley in this clip, but many times it's Ant or even Julius). The lead guard many times operates as a fulcrum, a hub. While it's an important piece, it's not necessarily a glamorous role. Set up the play, then get ready to catch the ball on a kickout to the wing and swing it side to side to keep the offense moving or drive it against slanted coverage and score or kick again. This is probably the biggest area where Mike has fallen off, but I think others have proven capable in spurts.
Ant is getting better in that lead guard position as he develops his game. His 1.4 hockey assists last season were 4th in the league, behind only Booker, Steph and Haliburton. I think it helped enable Julius as a playmaker.
