Draft Lottery, Schmaft Crmottery...

So, I think Kahn is the kind of guy who picks out guys in the draft that he likes, and does whatever he can do to get them. Last year, my stance on the darft could be summed up in 3 words: 'Get Ricky Rubio'. And Kahn made that happen. Granted, I didn't expect him to fall to 5, and who knows if Kahn would have tried to trade for him if he hadn't fallen into our laps, but my wish was granted.

This year, my opinion can again be summed up in 3 words: 'Get Evan Turner'. I am in favor of doing what it takes to get him, not just letting the chips fall where they may, and I think Kahn has this same philosophy towards the draft.

Of course, this thread could become irrelevant if the lottery shakes out the way we want it to, but I'm still not convinced that Wall is a 100% lock to go number 1, and E.T. could eventually overtake him. I guess the point of this thread is to discuss whether other posters have the same philospohy of doing whatever it takes to get E.T. or whether they would be equally happy with Favors or Wall or Johnson or whoever...

For what it's worth, Jim Pete said on P.A.'s show the other day that he preferred Turner over Wall or anyone else for this team (I don't have a link), and he projected him to having a Wade - type impact, whereas Wall may just have a Rose - type impact . I'm paraphrasing, but could Jim Pete have formulated this opinion through discussions with team scouts or Kahn himself? Who knows, I just have a hunch that Kahn may feel the same way, and may do what it takes to get Turner, rather than settling for the "Draft" "order".

Thoughts?

Agree with the premise that Kahn should do everything in his power (including drafting Turner #1, if the opportunity presented itself) to get Turner on this team.

However, more importantly at this juncture when nothing meaningful is happening with the Wolves, we have to come up with a better nickname for Turner than "ET." Cassell was ET, that was funny. I've been opposed to initial-related nicknames since K-Mart and T-Mac came into our lives. Enough already! Check this out:

"Two-tenths of a second separated the Michigan basketball team from an upset victory. Two-tenths of a second sent the Wolverines to a devastating 69-68 loss to top-seeded Ohio State in the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals, a flick of an Evan Turner wrist crushing an entire team’s hopes and dreams.
Just like that, it ended. Michigan’s season, one full of disappointment and frustration, stopped because of a 37-footer that went swish at the buzzer.
“Amazed,” Michigan sophomore guard Stu Douglass said. “It almost seemed like it just dropped in like it was a 10-foot floater. I was expecting it to hit the backboard or go right or left but it just goes over my head, right on line and straight in.
“It’s still a little bit of a blur.”
There’s a reason Turner’s nickname is “The Villain.” For Michigan, until the end of time for that shot, he will be among the most hated Buckeyes."

Turner = The Villian. That, my friends, is a good nickname.

Do we really adopt stuff from Club Trillion? I don't know.

I'm in favor of doing anything in our power to get Evan Turner. This boy has a lot of hype though, I just hope he can live up to it. Usually guys like him who do virtually everything at an amazingly high level don't have any problem at the very least being the top player on a team so we'll see what happens. I just hope that if we end up with #3 we don't get baited into giving up too much for Turner because other teams know how bad we want/need him. That being said, would I overpay for a guy who has a good chance of being the #1 option on our team? Yes.

Well, I always liked "Proof" for Cassell, never heard ET for him, but either way, 'The Villain' is great.
So, Kahn, go get the Villain.

If the Wolves get the #1 pick, it would still be beneficial to take Wall given his extremely high perceived value coming into the draft.

Just trade down to get Turner. Squeeze as much value out of the #1 as possible. While I'm of the ilk that believes Turner will be the better pro, there's very little doubt that Wall is the #1 pick at this point and most teams would give an arm and a leg to get him. Of course it's a risky strategy if a team like GSW picks second (a team with an already established up-and-coming PG in Curry), takes Turner and has no intention of trading him. But what's the worst that could happen? We end up with Wall? That's no booby prize.

Still, that's the luxury you get with the #1 pick. Is it true that we've never moved up in the lottery in the franchise's history? That's real rough, especially given how many times we've been in the lottery...

Hey, if he's wearing a Wolves jersey, I have no problem with him adding a little swagger, little 'tude, little villainyness to the squad.

Let the Thunder, Jazz, Nuggets, and Blazers forever hate going up against the Villain. Looking forward to many nights of 30/10/10 and a decade worth of parades down Hennepin and Washington Avenues.

if I was a minnesota'n I'd be fine if the consolation prize was favors. Him and rubio could be awesome at 2man game. While turner just makes rubio less important.

if we did get turner I'd want to trade rubio for a more important position

What do you want to do with Al and Kevin if you draft Favors?

if not, uhm, guess I'd be like everyone else and praying for turner

NBA.com just posted an article about Wall/Turner at #1.
Turner, not Wall, could end up as Draft's top pick

http://www.nba.com/2010/news/features/s ... index.html

This draft is going to be really exciting for us. We will own 6/60 of the picks, or 10% of the draft. There are going to be so many options for us that I have no idea how we will look next year. If we get Wall, then Rubio/Flynn needs to move. If we get Favors/Cousins, Al or Love needs to move. What kind of players/picks will these guys bring? Should we cash in here by packaging lower picks for a higher, or should we try to roll picks into future drafts? What if we get lucky and nab the #1 and pick Wall. Could Rubio + _____ get us Turner? Wouldn't it be sweet if we walked away with Wall and Turner? I think Kahn has done pretty well so far, but this offseason will definitely be his biggest test.

I think you have to with The Villain. Too solid a nickname for a clutch performer like Turner for us to ignore it just because a former towel boy helped popularize it.

We could potentially have a sweet lineup from a nickname standpoint once Rubio comes over.

The Human Victory Cigar/Shrek
Big Al/Senor Amor
The Flying Toothpick
The Villain/Waynedrops
La Pistola/The Flynnotaur

Kahn seems to have confirmed my suspicions, making it pretty clear that he is willing to do what it takes to get the player he wants in this draft:

"The Wolves, though, could pick as low as fifth, a prospect a longtime Wolves fan might expect and one that Kahn said can still be navigated.

"What's important is where we end up picking on draft night," Kahn said. "There are all kinds of things that can occur leading into the draft that night."

The problem with that is it takes two teams to trade. No matter how bad we want Turner, it doesn't mean we can get him.

I'm sure we could get him if we want him bad enough, just whether or not it's a good trade. I just really hope we don't get screwed on lotto night for once.

I fully expect us to land pick number 4, in which Kahn throws the kitchen sink at every team in front of us to get a top 2, and it still doesn't work. The ONLY way to get into top 2 is with Rubio, which I feel is too much when combined with Love/Al (which would most definately be included). Maybe if it's with NJ and we get Harris; I could live with Rubio+ pick+Love/Al for Top 2 pick/Harris/minor asset.

Time to bump this thread and start discussing how we're gonna trade up.

I seriously hope Kahn works his way into a top 2 pick. For some reason though I have this feeling we're going to strike out on our attempts to move up, miss out on the top free agents, and wind up trading a 2nd round pick and cap space to the Wiz for Gilbert Arenas.
