Were you right or wrong on the draft?

Post#1 » by cpfsf » Wed Apr 14, 2010 5:40 am

Post your thoughts leading up to our selection (prove it too if you can). This is NOT a thread for complaining. With that said, I will trust the Wolves front office over my own views because they actually study this stuff for a living. I'm sure their research is a bit better than my scouting reports from the few games I watch online with DX and NBADraft research.

Here is the draft thread if you want to look it up
http://forums.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=917602

This was my draft board
#5 Rubio
#6 Hill - In my defense, he's playing pretty well in Houston
#18 Casspi
#28 ???

KAHHHNNNNN!!!

IT FELL IN OUR LAPS

I was obviously referring to Rubio

Just for the fun of it, predict who's 6th

Hill (I actually want him here)

This one surprises me. I don't remember being that high on Hill at all, but maybe I didn't want another point guard. I honestly can't remember.

Normally I would be opposed to giving a late first round pick their own thread (especially when we can't agree on a #6 pick), but I find him to be a very realistic possibility considering that he is offering to stay an extra year and there is a good chance that the Spurs will buy the pick to get him if he's available.

Chicago picks at #16 and #26 while Portland picks at #24. I don't believe he will be available with the #28 pick.

I think most here believe Casspi would be a good fit, but who here would draft him at #18 (I don't believe for a second he will be available at #28)

You can argue that I never clearly said draft him at #18, but toward the end of the thread I began to realize he wouldn't be available later. I really just wanted him stashed for another year because we had 4 first round draft picks.

I wanted Tyreke and Rubio BADLY. I warmed up to Curry in the last week or two leading up to the draft. Cooled on Harden at the same time. Wanted no part of Thabeet or Jennings. Didn't even really have Flynn on my radar. Mixed feelings on Derozan, huge lover of Henderson.

I think I did pretty well (not trying to toot my own horn, I've been wrong plenty of times). Jury is still out on most of these guys though.

Also I found this gem awesome

Not in any way trying to bash Rev, draft is all hit and miss and hindsight makes anyone a genius but the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad things I would do to have these two right now. I love Rubio probably more than the next guy, but thats a crazy awesome back court knowing what we know now.

Leading up to the draft I was high on Harden and Flynn with the 1st 2 picks. I remember thinking Evans would have been fine too, but i got over Curry when he ditched the team tryout and I had a real bad feeling about Jennings.

After Harden and Evans got picked and the team got Rubio I switched to DeRozan, mainly because there was pretty much no one else decent worth drafting at that point. Rubio throwing him alley oops would have been pretty awesome. I remember warming to Hill in pre-draft but knew the team wouldn't go for a 3rd power forward, especially a raw one like him with no skills better then the 2 the team already had.

I remember still hoping for Holiday to fall to 18 for some reason, but I was pretty set on either Casspi or Daye from what I'd heard in the rumour mill. Turned out really wrong here.

At 28 I was SURE it would be Jerebko, more sure then picking Mayo back then. All rumours pointed to him too, so I was kind of disappointed when they picked up Ellington.

All in all, I was way off. And Charlotte just handed me their head scouting gig.

I wanted Rubio badly and was so excited that I missed who we picked 6th. Then I watched on the draft board and saw "Jonny Flynn"...and was like WTF? I didn't even think he would go in the lottery.
Really expected that we would pick DeRozan after picking Rubio because we badly needed a wing.

reading the reactions in the draft thread when we got Rubio and then picked Flynn is priceless. I still remember how everyone was so damn confused by that.

this sums it up quite well

I remember on the day of the draft I was hoping we could grab Evans and Harden as our future backcourt.

I thought it would go

Clippers - Griffin
Memphis - RUbio
Thunder - Thabeet
Kings - Evans
Us- Harden
Us- Jennings

I remember thinking to myself before the draft that we were basically guaranteed one of Harden or Evans so I was pretty stoked about that. At one point I actually thought we could get both of those guys because there were rumors from Sactown about Flynn. I was stoked when Rubio fell to us and had absolutely no clue who we'd take after him but I guess it's all history now.

My dream draft was Rubio/Harden, but I figured that they would both be gone before 5 (along with Evans and Griffin), and wanted Holiday/Derozan at 5/6 and Casspi at 18.

Flynn wasn't really on my radar for our first two picks, but I hated Thabeet, Henderson, and was pretty skeptical about Hill. To be fair, I didn't think Curry, Jennings, or Evans would look nearly as good as they have.

I had Evans/Flynn penciled in, since Evans was gone, I would've done the same thing as Kahn and taken Rubio/flynn. For some reason Flynn took me by storm pre-draft, I have this bad habit where I totally ignore a guy, then a couple weeks before the draft they'll get buzz and I'll get tunnel vision on them and start drinking the kool aid. Did the same thing w/ Foye, once the word was out that the fix was in on the Wolves liking Foye, I was all aboard. I liked Curry all along, but I was having a real tough time liking him enough to pick in the top 8 or 9 picks with his physical stature, so I wasn't really passionate either way about him, if he would've been picked I would've been good with it, but I also understood passing on him.

Ultimately I think the only viable options for those 2 picks was from Rubio/Flynn/Curry/Derozan/Jennings. I still think Rubio should've definitely been one of the picks, time will tell how badly we get killed for taking Flynn over Curry, hopefully Flynn can make it an argument. Jennings and Derozan I'm not really fretting over at all.

I was really high on Tyreke Evans and really low on Thabeet. At the time of the draft I thought they would and should pick Rubio and DeMar Derozan. DeMar hasn't done much this year, but everyone knew he would be a project so no one really knows on him yet. My 3rd choice was Curry. I didn't even think that Jennings or Flynn were in the picture once Rubio fell to us.

Before the draft I thought it would fall LAC-Griffin, Mem-Thabeet, Sea-Rubio, Sac-Flynn, MN-Evans, MN-Curry. Maybe that was just wishful thinking.

I wanted Evans and Harden (I thought Evans could play pg). I was terrified they were going to go after Thabeet.

Oh and as we were waiting on the 6th pick to come in, I thought DeRozan was the only logical choice.

Right: I was the #1 Thabeet hater and I liked Jennings more than most. If Rubio was gone, I would have considered him @ #6 before Thabeet.
TBD: I wanted Rubio and Derozan once draft day came around.

I just made a poll. I voted that I would have made better choices than Kahn. That doesn't mean they should hire me for a scouting position any time soon, or does it? Flynn has the edge over Hill (for now), but Casspi would look great in a Wolves uniform now.

I knew Thabeet was overrated. After Griffin, I believe Thabeet, Harden, and Rubio were considered the next best prospects (funny how that worked out). I remember that leading up to the draft, Thabeet looked like the prospect that had the most bust potential. He just sounded too risky to draft that high. I still don't understand why Memphis drafted him. Of course, I probably would have picked up up if he was available at #6.

I never would have drafted Jennings. Before the draft I wanted Rubio, but Jennings was going out of his way to call Rubio overrated. He just had this horrible attitude leading up to the draft.

rubio was a no brainer for me, i love the pick. but i say kahn made better choices than i would have, with rubio on board i would have taken derozen (sp?) and not sure how that would have worked, flynn seems to have a better future, even if its 6th man behind rubio-i actually like him for that role, sort of the opposite player of rubio.

but if we hadnt taken flynn would rubio have ended up coming over? and if we had derozen would that effect brewers good development or would we have ended up offering more to sessions because no other pgs? i dont know
i will just go with i like kahns picks better than mine would have been

facebook status: "hope we get tyreke evans and either curry or rubio..."

but what does this all prove.... nothing... we should have taken curry over flynn.. i think everyone knew flynn was the wrong pick to make when we did it.... hes a great character guy, but talent-wise, i thought he should of been at the end of the lottery, or later.... i liked lawson more than him in addition to curry, rubio, and evans... i even liked jrue holiday more than him.... although i was completely off on what collison turned into, hes been sensational....

and i was never high on harden.. i watched him play a lot in college.. he just strikes me as lazy on the court, and not very athletic... seems to just get by to me for some reason.. never seen 'fire' in him.

At 7:09pm on draft night, 1 minute befor we picked Flynn, I said "let's go curry"

I hadn't completely decided until that moment, but if it were me in the draft room, I would have said the same thing. Flynn had grown on me, but I was really high on Curry and in the heat of the moment, that is what I decided.

I was ecstatic about Rubio falling to us, and that pick was a no-brainer,but I wanted Curry at 6.

I am also a big Flynn supporter and think that it is way too early to give up on him, but of course if his future is here it is as a dynamic 6th man.

Could Rubio and Curry have played heavy minutes together? We will never know. But that is who I wanted.

I don't really remember. I know I like Evans (who didn't) and I was super stoked about Rubio falling to us. I also remember liking Calathes as a backup for Rubio. I was excited when we drafted him in the second round, then he got traded.

The Flynn pick was kind of puzzling but I assumed it was an insurance pick in case Rubio didn't come over. I wasn't that high on Curry and I'm still not convinced he would be the best long-term pick for this team but we'll see.

That's about all I remember.

When we only had the 6th pick, I wanted Derozan. I thought we really needed someone with good size and athleticism for his position. I was scared of Harden and especially Curry because were already undersized and under athletic in the front court. I thought Evans had the biggest upside but I was a little worried about his ball dominance and lack of an outside shot. I didn't know much about Flynn, but I'm wary of players who rise as fast as he did right before the draft.
When we got the 5th pick, my philosphy changed a little bit. I thought backcourts Curry/Evans or Harden/Flynn fit well together, so maybe we could go that direction.

I wasn't suprised too much by the Flynn pick on draft day. He was the only one left on the board who we were rumored to like. I wanted Rubio and Derozan, but I knew Derozan wasn't to be an option by that point. I thought Curry was a possibility, but it seemed to be obvious before the draft that Kahn really liked Flynn.

I still don't know how I ended up with Jordan Hill. I'm kind of surprised D'Antoni gave up on the guy so quickly. I think that man is blatantly insane. Darko and Hill were probably two of the better defensive players (maybe that's not saying too much). In Houston he didn't exactly break out, but he is pretty effective with the minutes he's been given.
