NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks and other teams hoarding salary-cap space got some good news Friday when they were told at the league's Board of Governors meeting that the projected 2010-11 salary cap will be $56.1 million.

That figure was $2 million to $3 million more than most teams had been expecting, and for the Knicks it ensures they have enough cap space this summer to sign two maximum-salary free agents.

"That's a lot of money. That's good," said Knicks president Donnie Walsh, who attended the meeting to learn the results of the Knicks' draft position through a tiebreaker.

Because of the worldwide economic downturn, the league had warned teams last July to expect the salary cap to be significantly lower -- perhaps as low as $51 million.

Other teams that will be positively affected by Friday's news include the Nets, Heat, Wizards, Bulls, Clippers and Timberwolves.

Our chances of signing Rudy Gay probably just went up.

sign Gay AND Darko, dump Gomes, trade Love and #16 for Favors.

Flynn/Sessions/(Rubes)
Turner/Brewer/Ellington
Gay/Whoever at #26
Jefferson/Favors
Milicic/Hollins

4 iso scorers and one decent defending center does not a championship team make

And why should the Wolves have to add anything to Love to get Favors? "Sorry bro, you're only offering a player more accomplished in HS, College, and the pros for our prospect PF who's supposedly way better than he's shown because of some questionable logic about his team's PG, we're gonna need that #16 pick too"

I'd tell that team to take a big fat hike

Just so I dont have to do any heavy lifting....any one have our cap space for this summer? (assuming we cut Gomes, and including draft pick holds and rubio cap hold)

Why didn't we trade Gomes before the deadline? I know a lot of fans think their role players are worth at least a first round pick. With Gomes it's debatable, but he definitely could have nabbed an early second.

Any news on where our Utah pick ended up? I assume they did the coin toss at the same time as this Governor's meeting.

Either Kahn might want to keep him...or the deals werent good enough to warrant trading a respected vet?

More importantly I think its probable that Kahn didnt want to take back salary for next year, and the teams that would have wanted him didnt have the expirings or cap space for Gomes. So maybe Kahn decided he would rather take the 1 mil/ year hit in order to gain the cap space himself than take on extra salary next year.

$1,003,800 UTA pick (#23) cap hold
$475,000 Minimum Roster hold
$41,408,005 TOTAL

$14,691,995 2010-11 Cap Space

$56,100,000 2010-11 Salary Cap

Its the time of year where deals handed out to Sessions and Hollins are magnified. I am not saying either are bad deals, or that the wolves had a chance at a max-player, but without the both of them we have about 21-22mil in cap space. Definitely enough to add several quality(2nd-3rd tier) free agents if that was the route Kahn wanted to take.

Now obviously, other deals can happen(jefferson) to get more cap space, but 21-22 mil in cap space, while still having Jefferson, Love, Brewer, Flynn, Ellington, 3 picks, Pekovic, Rubio would be a pretty impressive list of assets heading into an important offseason of re-shaping the roster.

I don't believe for a second that even a guy like Gay would sign here as a FA without being massively overpaid. So I'm hoping this space can be used in a trade to land a guy like Iggy.

Kind of like Kobe, Lamar, Gasol, and Bynum?

Favors will have two more years on his rookie deal, doesn't pout, and I think nearly everyone would agree that he has more upside. You have to pay for upside.
