PG Battle

Post#1 » by Klomp » Tue Apr 27, 2010 2:36 pm

Sessions started just one game while playing behind rookie Jonny Flynn, who averaged 13.5 points and 4.4 assists per game in just under 29 minutes. Sessions said he was told the position would be up for grabs heading into next season.

"They said the position is open. There's no set [situation]," Sessions said. "When it comes to training camp, they're probably going to let us battle it out, and the best man will win and the other guy will back up. We're a great tandem though. I like Jonny. He's a great young player.

"If he backs me up or I back him up, we'll get it done."

You have a flawed thesis.

Rubio didn't want to play for Minnesota recently because of buyout issues. He would have made very little money if he did (and I emphasize very little). He will play for Minnesota in either 2011/12 or 2012/13. I don't want to research the exact quote, but he stated that Minnesota is his number one destination.

I think most here would draft Wall, but many of those who wanted Wall would want us to trade down for Turner. I'm leaning towards Wall to trade for Turner, but that's going to depend on the NBA lottery.

I'll believe it when I see it. Sessions was better than Flynn last year but they always chose to start Flynn.

cpfsf I think you are slightly mistaken.

While most of your info is correct (about the buyout) and while I 100% believe Rubio will be in a Wolves jersey to start the 2011-2012 season I don't think he has said "Mn is my number one destination."

He has certainly said that he has no problem playing in MN and that he wants to come over to the NBA and that is his goal. By all accounts him and Kahn have a good relationship and Kahn has never said anything other than Rubio in MN - barring a crazy trade offer.

You know what.. I even remember reading that, dur.

My mistake, I was thinking more along the lines of "If I could pick anywhere to play.." rather than "They are my option and I wish to play there."

Good call though.

I don't get all these other fanboys saying he won't be here. Its nice to have a player that most of the league seems to have an interest in though.

I can see the confusion. I kind of worded it poorly. I had trouble finding the quote, but I remembered I posted the link on the Knicks forum, so I had to do some digging.

I think Kahn has done everything right in regards to Ricky Rubio. You can argue that Jonny Flynn didn't help (I believe they said Flynn was on top of their board after Rubio).

The moment Rubio does come over, Minnesota will have one of the best PG duos with Flynn coming off the bench. I don't believe for a second that Flynn can play shooting guard. I would prefer that Minnesota "makes a splash" when Rubio comes over (whether that be 2011 or 2012).

Right. I agree with you.

I believe that Flynn was part of the rumored Evans deal where we got sniped on Johnson falling to us so instead we shipped the pick for the Bobcats pick this year and Denver took Lawson.

I have no issue at all with Kahn on how he has handled Rubio. I wanted to take him #2 and was willing to trade up to do it. I'm glad he fell to us and we still have Flynn.

If Flynn has (good) value now then I wouldn't be opposed to dealing him but if people are trying to low-ball us then I'd rather hold on to him and see what he has. I like Jonny, I'm just a bigger Rubio mark.

I got to admit that Houston offer looks pretty fair now. I still would rather have Rubio, but it wasn't as bad as people think it was.

It was funny how Minnesota and Memphis were lowballing each other. I believe we offered Smith and #5 for #2 and they offered #2 for #5 and Love.

Sessions has had every reason to complain this year, but he hasn't. Good for him. He deserved a chance to start.

I'm glad these two get the chance to battle it out for the starting spot. Especially making it known this early should fuel both players going into the summer. Sessions, one pointer for you; learn to make free throws.

Sessions has his problems at the FT line at the beginning of the year, but he ended up at 72%. He's a career 76% shooter. Some room to improve, but not bad.

Hard to imagine a PG battle for a 15-win team ... might be best to keep it to a game of "Dribble Tag" best 2 of 3.

Both guys are trade assets, it is a matter of who brings back the better reward. The "winner" mans the ship for a year and then becomes the Bobby Jackson behind Rubio.
