Chris, you mentioned the possibility of Beasley being traded in Miami. Any chance a trade between the Wolves and the Heat could happen? Kahn is looking for a young star. Beasley still have potential...

Chris Sheridan (4:06 PM)

There are two teams that I believe might take on Beasley in what would be a lopsided cap-clearing trade for the Heat that could be agrred to by June 30 but could not be announced until the new cap is set July 8: Minnesota and New Jersey. Both are going to have loads of cap room, and neither is a particularly attractive destination for free agents. The solution: Acquire players via trade into their cap space. Example A: Miami offers Beasley, Cook, James Jones, $3 million and a future No. 1 to Wolves for basically nothing. The Heat thereby clear all their contracts and get their payroll down to zero (besides Wade), and Minny gets the No. 2 pick of the '08 draft and a future No. 1. Example #2: Miami offers the same package to the Nets, who need to restock and won't find many players eager for two years of purgatory in Newark.

For MIN fans, Sheridan produces the TYPE of scenario that I've been talking about for perhaps the last 18 months. Economically, our cap space has a lot more value to a team in a key free agent destination than it does to us. For them, it could equal Chris Bosh or Wade (which they'd trade big assets to get). For us, it equals maybe Rudy Gay on a fairly expensive contract. To me, the key to a good trade is finding assets that have greater value elsewhere, because with a big difference, both teams can find a package that improves them .. or at least helps them reach their goal. The greatest value for MIN's cap space is not in free agency, but as a trade asset. Note that this package is probably close to the trade value that we would hope for from our best players in trade .. the cap space is very valuable.

Personally, if this was the only option on the table, its not a bad price. However, I would certainly want to see what teams like CHI, NYK, or other FA destinations would have to offer as well.

Hopefully Kahn can pull off a deal like this that actually brings in a quality, non-headcase player. Anyone who experienced the Isaiah Rider years should be forever immunized from lusting over someone like Beasely.

I don't think Beasley has those kind of issues. His seem to be more immature then violent.

Meh jones is only partially guaranteed if memory serves me.

Like 1.5 then ~2m if not waived before 6/30? Same date as gomes I believe.

So who would we have to trade? I would imagine Gomes and Stiemsma, but is that enough?

A future top-59 protected 2011 2nd round pick.

Would the salaries match up? I don't know anything about Stiemsma's contract.

I'm beginning to think as talented as Beasley may be, he might be a player that is a subtraction by addition; meaning his value decreases the value of a team, despite his great potential.

I'm not completely opposed to the possibility, but skeptical.

Why would you have to match salaries? All they'd have to do is send them a 2nd rounder like Casper described and a TPE.

I'm sure in this sort of deal gomes will not be involved

For a pile of this many assets one would assume MIA expects pure cap.

The real question is which deals has shrink already considered with gomes + jones money. Since both are unguaranteed. They could be swung to yet another team.

Jones 4.6m 1.8m guarantee
Gomes 4.2m 1m guarantee

8.8m salary, 2.8m guarantee
Or 6m in cap space for a team if they need cap space this year.

Combined they could net someone on a contract around ~11m?

I remember when I got ripped on for not liking Beasley. When I said his attitude and defense was an issue, and that he would not be special unless he could develop into an attacking Mello type SF.

Sounds somewhat like a Carney-type deal.

I believe Beasley has a team option for 2011 that needs to be decided right before next season (like Brewer's and Pecherov's this year). It is ~6.5M. If we dealt for him, it would be interesting to see how we approach that. On one hand, he hasn't earned a 6.5M contract. However, if we declined, I could see him turn into a chucker trying to earn his next deal.

I think that is something that would be interesting to follow. If we are still in the stage of acquiring talent, I think a deal like this has to be at least considered. Whether the risk is worth it or not......that is another question.

I would do this. tweener or not, he could become a very good player still. maybe not defensively, though. why not take a fairly small risk when the reward could be huge?

when looking at the 6.5M, 3 questions need to be answered:
1a. Where does he fit in a team that plays decent defense?
1b. Where does he fit with a Rubio run team?
1c. What are the chances of him getting drunk driving around downtown watching porn?

Sure I'd take a flyer on SuperCoolBeas. Assuming he will play at SF.

Has he shown anything to make us believe that he play SF?

Personally, I would rather make it a 3-way deal, where Beasley is sent to the 3rd team, we take on the contracts, and all the assets. Otherwise, lets just stay out of the Beasley 'sweepstakes'
