MIN/ATL: Gomes + cap for Marvin Williams?

Saw this from an ATL fan, and thought it might be worth a discussion. I haven't followed the
Hawks much this year. If Darko is an indication, Kahn likes the potential of the lottery busts (I hope that doesn't mean Beasley). Can Williams still make good on his potential? It looks like he regressed a little this season.
Marvin Williams 6' 9" SF 24 years old
30 MPG, 45.5% FG, 82% FT, 5.1 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.6 BPG, 10.1 PPG
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/marvin_williams/2010-11: $6,712,500
2011-12: $7,500,000
2012-13: $8,287,500
2013-14: $7,500,000 (p.o.)
We'd still have money for Darko.

That's really a tough call for me. While I think Marvin can still get better I don't know if it's worth having him if we have to pay him that much. I would rather have Marv than Gomes but I still don't know. I guess I'm neutral.

He's still young so you can make an argument for improvement, the cost seems risky. I would look at Williams as something like option D, behind drafting a SF, trading for Deng, and trade/signing of another SF type (Gay, Outlaw, etc.)

I want the rights to Childress and to trade Marvin Williams to a third team for expirings.

The guy just isn't a playmaker and I don't think he has it in him to become one. I have never been a fan and have said so on and on for the last two years it seems. As is, he is overpaid 2 million/year. I don't see his volume scoring/rebounding going up on the Wolves. He is a longer version of Ryan Gomes. For the same money I'll take Childress who is turning into a playmaker over there in europe.

I would do it. I think Marvin has the tools but is horribly underused by Atlanta.
He will never be the go-to guy, but I think he could be an important piece. He is athletic, has good size, decent jumper. In a passing offense like this one he could be an important piece.

maybe he'll do fine in the triangle IMO... but I wouldn't do that right now, maybe we could use our cap better...

I would not do that. I don't think that is the type of risk the wolves need to take. In comparison, I would rather have a rookie with potential at one quarter the price.

I do this in a heartbeat, I agree with Rev on this one, Marvin Williams is terribly underused in Atlanta

I'm sort of on the fence here. I like Marvin and think that he's underrated (especially considering his defense), but he wouldn't be my first choice to upgrade the SF spot.

Yeah I agree. The team needs to aim for better players then Marvin if it wants to improve.

Immediate reaction - Yes! After looking at contract - No!

Our assets will be spent this summer.
Our best chance at a "star" is going to be via the draft. We will not trade for one, and none will sign. What we can do is take advantage of our fiscal flexibility to get a kid with untapped potential, at a need position, that fits our scheme.
Are you telling me Marvin williams would not benefit from a High screen/role with Rubio? Or that he would not be comfortable with the pinch post? The kid is criminally underused. His contract allows a trade like this to happen.

I agree, he's underused, and we do have to be realistic about free agency. But do you think Kahn would be happy spending THAT much money on a kid with untapped potential, to start at a position where we desperately need improvement?

Why couldn't we just overpay Josh Childress? I don't think Atlanta would match if they still have Johnson, Crawford, and Williams next year, so matching any offer for Childress might not make a whole lot of sense. I never followed Childress overseas (why would I), but I read an interesting article on SI...
Consider how much one year in Europe did to elevate and harden Bucks rookie point guard Brandon Jennings. Childress, 26, has undergone similar improvements. Not only is he tougher, but NBA scouts say he has become a better shooter and a more versatile decision-maker. As one NBA team executive put it, "He's making more money over there than he could have made in the NBA, and he's going to come back with a better understanding of how to play different positions. At the end of the day, he made a good decision to go over there."
But he insists he hasn't decided whether to stay with Olympiakos for a third year, or to try to return to the NBA before the anticipated lockout of 2011.

Isn't he getting like 10 million US a season over there? I don't think anybody is going to be matching that.

Given where we are in the rebuild, I think that if you have to ask "Is this worth it?", the answer is almost always no.
He's young, a good fit, and his contract isn't bad enough to keep him from being extremely tempting, but I really don't think you can do it. A team in our position can't afford to take on contracts for 5th best starters like Williams until we have 4 guys we're sure will be better than him. Granted, the cap space almost definitely won't be turned into a star directly, but it can be used to gradually accumulate assets until they add up to an actual star (or until we luck into one of the assets himself becoming one). It's too early to spend it all on a guy like Williams.
I'm not overly confident in this decision, but gun to my head, I'd have to say no.

I'm kinda split. I don't think his contract is bad. he is every bit the player luol deng is, at nearly half the cost. He was the 4th or 5th option this year, depending on who was on the floor at the time, on a grind-it-out half court team. He only took 8.2 shots a game, down from the last 2 years. His shooting efficiency also dropped a little from the 2 previous years when he posted pretty solid numbers. I agree with rev's assessment of criminal underuse. He could be pretty effective as a slashing SF in Rambis's offense, I just wish he had a consistent 3 point shot.
His size, strength, and defense at the 3 are a plus, his outside shooting is a negative.
We could definitely use the size and defense.
A big plus is that he is only 23 years old and has been a key part of winning teams.
I think a lot depends on how the draft shakes out. We might nab a pretty nice sg/sf at 16 as well as our lotto pick.
If we turned our cap room and picks into turner, a shooter at 16, Darko, and Williams, I could live with that. Only thing is with turner and williams we would have trouble from deep.
Since gomes is fully guaranteed, I have a hard time seeing him in a deal with ATL unless he is paired with sessions or brewer before 7-1, it would more likely be raw cap space for williams after the trade moratorium is lifted. It would piss off Joe Johnson before he hit FA too.
If they re-up Joe Johnson with a max deal they will be at about 67 mil in committed salary, so a salary dump of williams is possible if johnson is re-signed, I just don't find it very likely Johnson would re-up there unless he was assured they wouldn't be giving away players.

Semi off topic, can someone post a link to the NBA salary spreadsheet website/bible? I lost all my bookmarks when I wiped my laptop's hard drive, and I'm finding it hard to comment on matters such as this without actually knowing players' salaries.

I completely neutral to this deal.
I'd probably do Gomes + Sessions for williams though.
