Chad Ford on Wolves/Sixers Trade

Matt (Philly)
Based on various local radio interviews, Stafanski seems to have indicated the Sixers are leaning towards Turner? Yet, you have them taking Favors in your mock draft. What indications point to that? And aren't the Sixers better off getting Turner and playing him with Iguodala or even trading Iguodala and rebuilding around Turner?
Chad Ford

I've heard Turner. I've heard Favors and I've heard Cousins to the Sixers. They need a center more than they need another wing player. However, Turner would be very hard to pass upon. The thing to keep in mind is that I think Doug Collins will have a bigger say on this pick than the local media is letting on and I hear Collins would really like the Sixers to take another big. To me the best case scenario for Sixers is sending 2 to Minnesota for 4 and 16. They'll get either Cousins or Favors at 4 and pick up another nice asset in the mid first round.
Though I would hope that we'd send the #23 instead of #16.

#23 or #16 doesn't matter.
We still have enough assets to trade up into the late lottery if we really like another player.

Now we're the ones who get to play hardball. We're sittin' pretty good right now at #4 where the pick should be DMC. If Philly decides they want a big they can either draft one at #2 or trade the pick for a lower pick + value. Any value they gain past getting the guy they wanted anyways is just a bonus. Everyone claims we have a giant fetish for Turner but if Kahn plays it right we can get Turner without giving up a lot of value (aside from the #4 of course). Forget taking on Elton Brand's contract..

Shrug. It's Chad Ford.
I happen to think that in this draft, 4 + 16 for 2 is more than fair, but I don't believe it until I see it.

That's what I've been thinking, too, I don't see it happen though.

I think you're right. If they trade down to us it means they prefer Cousins and anything extra is a nice bonus (they would get to pay him less by drafting later as well).
I'm reminded of the Bulls trading down from the 2 to 4 (Tyrus Thomas for Aldridge) in 2006 with the sweetner being the lowly Viktor Khyapa.

Viktor Khyapa? You mean the best defender not in the NBA?

4 and 16 will not be enough for the 2nd pick, simply because their is Wall and Turner and then the draft falls back. The 76ers are going to pick Evan Turner, so it's time to move on.

Disagree. By the time the draft rolls around we'll be hearing that Favors being talked about as the #2. His combine results compare most closely to Dwight Howard. He has the build and speed for the NBA, and Sixers NEED bigs.

milf is right, Favors is getting lots of love - 18 year old kid who already has a low fat sculpted build, when he's 25 he might be a physical force. The only guarantee should be Wall at 1, anybody else is putting their jobs on the line by not researching every angle available. Turner may very well be the very next Brandon Roy, but the next Brandon Roy isn't going to get you past Lebron, Wade, and Dwight

I would put more stock into the information that Ford relays, and no stock into his connecting of the dots and personal opinion.

I disagree. At this point, I'd say it's:
1. John Wall
[Gap}
2a. Evan Turner
2b. Derrick Favors
2c. DeMarcus Cousins
[Gap]
Everyone Else
At this point, I think that the only real difference in value between 2 and 4 is that 2 gets to pick their favorite of those 3. I don't think that little added value is worth anything more than the 16 (and maybe not even that much).

my problem with DMC is his personality profile. is it just me or does anyone else see more and more and more problem players scattered around pro sports these days? i get a bad vibe from DMC.

I think your glass is a little bit more than half full here. I don't think there's a GM that takes Cousins over Favors right now. I'd say John Wall and then 2A Turner and 2B Favors. The risk Cousins presents that the others don't puts him solidly in the #4 spot.

I agree, which is why I put Cousins at "c" and Favors at "b." I don't doubt that I'm biased, though.

I'd say that this is solidly a 4 player draft with those guys ahead of everyone else because, to me at least, they're the only ones that have real franchise player talent. I put Wall a tier ahead of those other guys because he's the only one that can really be considered a "sure thing." Turner, Favors, and Cousins all have some big red flag that makes it less likely that they'll be able to reach their franchise player potential. Turner measured out with less than ideal length and athleticism, Favors was relatively unproductive for his talent level, and Cousins has character concerns. Cousins certainly has the biggest concerns of the three, but I think that the premium that the NBA puts on Centers elevates his value to their level.

If Turner, Cuz, and Favors are really that close, at what point do the teams start thinking "fit" over BPA?
I'm pretty sure it will shake out like this, depending on Philly
2 - Turner, 3 - Favors, 4-Cuz
2 - Favors, 3 - Turner, 4 - Cuz
2 - Cuz, 3 - Turner, 4 - Cuz
Any way the chips fall, I think we land Cuz. We need to get past NJ, so a trade is the most likely thing to assure Turner (if we want him so bad). Philly still does have leverage, depending on how badly NJ favors turner or favors (hehe - lots of favors), we might end up in a bidding war with NJ over the rights to the 2nd pick.
I think this is a pretty big deal for us, because getting Turner effects what we do with our bigs logjam:
Turner = potentially being able to keep Al and Love
no Turner = probably trading one or both Al/Love

I don't see how getting Turner changes the situation with Jefferson and Love.

I'm assuming that Kahn won't feel as desperate to trade Al or Love if we can get star-wing help in the draft. I know they don't work defensively, but it still might be the belief of some memebers of the organization that a 3 man rotation where 2/3 are Al and Love each getting like 30 minutes each could work. For instance Al/Darko/Love with each getting like 30 minutes might still be a concieveable notion for some.

No Turner Kahn please do not make the trade.
