Finding A Shot Creator

The 2010 free agent class is devoid of any reasonable shot creators not named Lebron or Johnson. Thus, it appears if we are to add a shot creator we will have do so through trade.

Other than the 2010 draft class, really all that comes to mind is the usual criminals -- Ellis and Martin -- both of whom are overpaid and do not play defense (not championship caliber building blocks).

What do we do to solve this problem? Do we merely wait until next year?

We need a 2 that can create. Basically we need Evan Turner or a younger version of Joe Johnson. Because I don't think Gay quite fits that mold and I don't think we go after him, I don't think we get that guy this offseason. Would you do a Jefferson for Ellis/Randolph deal? At this point I don't think the Warriors do, but even with Udoh they still have no low post offense so maybe.

I think we roll with the wings we now have and hope we get our 2 next offseason (Harrison Barnes?).

Yea lets just wait for Harrison Barnes. I like his game a lot and he would be a good fit here.

We just picked up 2 players that can create their own shot in W. Johnson and Martell Webster. The suggestions that they can't are ridiculous. Let's take a look at past players that have been accused of not being able to create their own shot.

Ray Allen
Brandon Roy
Dwayne Wade
Etc...

Take a look at the video of Webster putting up 21 in a quarter. He's got a nice step back J, and he got to the line 3 times in that quarter. That's creating your own shot.

As far as Johnson is concerned, I'm not a prophet, but with his length, athleticism and quick release, I think he'll be able to create off the dribble.

Rudy Gay is ALOT better at creating his shot than anybody we have. Very few players simply can not create their own shot at all. We have some of the worst in this area but getting Rudy Gay would be a big help. Webster can manufacture his offense to a degree as well.

Maybe this year Flynn, will be able to play a little more to his strengths. I dont want him creating 6 TO's per game, but I think Flynn could help minimize others' weaknesses, by getting into the lane and kicking it out...

I understand this may not be the direction the team is going, but I would love to see them use Al Jefferson as the shot creator. Run the offense through him for the start of the season, if continues to be a black hole then we can make a change. I just have always wanted to see him play a full season with shooters and a defensive big. And this year we could ahve that. Now he hasn't shown much willingness to pass, but I will give him the excuse of not having anyone to pass to.

FWIW, AlJeff averaged 25/13/6assts in my season of 2k10, but then again he was always passing the ball out to Ray Allen and Kyle Korver :-)

Great. Let's wait for the guy we have a 15% chance of getting. The Wolves have been doign that for half of their franchises existence and it hasn't happened yet.

Well I think the suggestion that they are shot creators is ridiculous, so there. They've never shown the ability to do that. Neither takes the ball to the hoop. You can paint lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.... or something like that.

I've come to think we did okay in the draft ... I know many wanted more, but reality is upon us for now. If you're not a Wes Johnson fan, you're likely disappointed.

I'd like to think a FA player and his agent would see the opportunity for a player to come in and be a goto guy ... I do not think Joe Johnson is too old. As a matter of fact, I think he'd be a good addition as we need some veteran leadership from a player that can perform on both ends of the floor.

Well let's play it safe and say we win less than 24 games. He hasn't even played in the Dean Dome yet so he may or may not be the 1st overall pick. Possibly top 3 and I see us down there with the Warriors. Not trying to be negative, I hope we do a hell of a lot better. I don't want Kevin Martin, not so sure Iggy is the answer, don't want Ellis, can we afford Gay? probably not, so we build through the draft and stick with the guys on our roster right now unless Kahn can get a beast wing for Love, Pekovic, or Big Al.

A pretty hot pig.

Though I agree. Waiting for next year's draft would be idiotic, though I think that's what ends up happening anyway

Other than Barnes (who is a more of a SF), next years draft class doesn't project to be very deep at SG's.

The only thing I remember about these guys was that Wade's outside shooting in general was questioned, and that Roy wasn't "athletic" enough.

There are two things here.

1.) We still do not know what we will look like after the Al Jefferson trade. We cannot analyze our line-up yet because of that.

2.) We are clearly building around Rubio as the playmaker. That being said we should not put a ton of asset into a playmaker now when we will just put the ball in Rubio's hands next year. Instead, lets force Johnson, Flynn, Love to handle the ball and set each other up. A read/react offense like this can do a lot to cover up for a solid ball handler if players have good court vision, work off the ball, and are willing to hit teammates. If those 3 guys can learn some basic playmaking it will just improve us that much more when Rubio comes.

Love for Mayo?

Brewer (reunited with Horford) to Atlanta S&T for Johnson?

I know Johnson is widely considered too old for the Wolves core, but he seems to be exactly the kind of player we need right now.
